Pushing our Limits in the Backcountry Hiking in Algonquin Park! (Western Uplands Loop 1)

  • Hiking the Western Uplands Trail in Algonquin Provincial Park was both challenging and rewarding. Our second day on the trail promised approximately 12 km of hiking that would push us to our physical limits... the heat and humidity (29 degrees C) combined with ever present mosquitos made for difficult trekking. We did manage to make it to Panther Lake with plenty of time to spare. Panther Lake is a long, secluded lake on the first loop of the trail. Separated by the main trail by a nearly 1 km side trail, our campsite was incredibly secluded, and equally as stunning.

    Omg guys I don't know how you possibly survived Algonquin Park! Last time I did your trip I did it with a hammock in October. You guys rock for surviving it

      How did you find hammock life in the park? We don’t think it would be possible in June due to the bugs 😂

      @@RichandKirsten hammocks work quite well in Algonquin, I used mine last fall on the highlands trail. Mine has a bugnet and I use an underquilt so bugs haven't been an issue

    lol omg so many similarities to our first time doin the first loop, im surprised the ground treated u so well without pads, we also ran to the closest burger joint when we got out and now its tradition! great vid.

      The forest floor was pretty plush although I think next time we’d make an effort to get pads in our bags - we’ll have to find a way to shed some weight else where. Have to say that McDonalds was one of the best meals we’ve ever had 😂

    Great vlog guys! Mind me asking what camera you use for the selfie shots? it's got very shallow DOF which is very appealing. Keep it up!

    This video made your experience look brutal - I'm surprised you both were in those good spirits by the end of it all. I know it was your first experience of overnight hiking - has it put you off or do you expect to still do more? There's such amazing day (or even half day) hiking in Canada too - though I know it pushes up the costs when you have to add accommodation on top of things. I'm very much looking forward to finding out what's coming up next!

      Hey Caroline! There’s something so rewarding about doing tough hiking, setting up camp and sleeping among nature! We are definitely not put off of hiking in the least... in fact our gear will be getting use again very soon!

    How cold does it get at night in July?

    • @RichandKirsten
      @RichandKirsten  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably as low as 5 degrees Celsius, but normally between 10-15. Some parts of Canada get much colder, ex Jasper reaches about -1 in July over night.

    mosquito changed entire geography of kirsten's face , besides mosquito what other hardship did you encounter on this trek . you should have caught sound of wilderness at night from inside the tent.

      Rich had to leave his bag on the trail during the last 1 km of the hike because he was suffering from some heat exhaustion... had to go back and pick up the bag after a bit of rest!
