Hi Sally, there was no particular reason other than Hoyas almost always want to grow up so sometimes it’s just easier to let them do what they want to do. There is however absolutely no reason that you couldn’t do it as you suggested and take it around the bottom in the globe shape of the trellis. As a matter fact it might work better that way!

Dear Doug, it's so fascinate everytime to visit your hoyas and grow tents! Seems you have changed to smaller pots/cups, right? I have a question, some of my hoyas, in the grow tent, their leaves are thinner than the same ones growing in the garden in Summer. What should I do to improve the leaf quality when they grow in the tent? Much appreciate it!
I have switched to much smaller pots and mostly use clear pots as they really help me when trying to determine when to water as root rot is my nemesis! I have not really noticed this thinner leaf phenomenon when plants are grown in the tent. New growth tends to be thinner and more delicate until it finally hardens off after achieving almost its maximum growth, but this is generally true when plants are grown out of doors as well. I wish that I could help more with that question, but I don't have the answer.
Hoya imperialis needs a very sturdy trellis with its stiff vines. I like to use Tomato or Pepper Ladders such as found in this link: www.gardeners.com/buy/veggie-ladders-set-of-3/8611246.html They would also work for magnifica.
Hello Doug. Very ingenious idea thank you. I only have couple of Hoyas and new to Hoyas as well. If you do not mind me asking, What kind of soil you use for your Hoyas? what is your winter care essentials?
Hi Rhode, the biggest winter care essential is to watch overwatering. I still struggle with root rot, but it is getting a little better recently. I have been using different mixes trying to get the right one now for years and I continue to mess with it, but my basic formula still works pretty well for most Hoyas: 50% peat-based potting soil, 25% large perlite and 25% small orchid bark. Some growers use nothing but small coconut chips and do very well with it. I am getting pretty good results with it now, but there is a learning curve. Use what you are comfortable with and be very careful with your watering is the best advice that I can give.
@@DougChamberlainVTHoyas Thank you very much Doug. I think you are right about the overwatering. I am so afraid to overwater my Hoyas that I tend to Let them dry out too much. The roots are suffering right now. I hope they bounce back🤞The leaves on my Australis are so thin though.
If you really want to grow Hoyas wildly fast, a temperature of high 80s to low 90s during the day and low 70s at night will produce incredible results, but doing that inside a home is problematic.
Here is a link to what I used, but it is no longer available but I'm sure you can easily find it elsewhere: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CX48P53/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Elizabeth the wire appears to be 16 gauge and here is the link to what I bought. Of course it is no longer available, but I am sure that it will not be too hard to find a similar fencing: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CX48P53/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
@@DougChamberlainVTHoyas Thank you so much! The clear pot method is very helpful!
Which trellis is best for Hoya imperialis And Hoya magnifica?
Hoya imperialis needs a very sturdy trellis with its stiff vines. I like to use Tomato or Pepper Ladders such as found in this link: www.gardeners.com/buy/veggie-ladders-set-of-3/8611246.html They would also work for magnifica.
The trellis’s are really nice, let your imagination go wild.
Thanks Noelle!
Hello Doug. Very ingenious idea thank you. I only have couple of Hoyas and new to Hoyas as well.
If you do not mind me asking,
What kind of soil you use for your Hoyas?
what is your winter care essentials?
I am so afraid to overwater my Hoyas that I tend to
Let them dry out too much. The roots are suffering right now. I hope they bounce back🤞The leaves on my Australis are so thin though.
You mentioned temperature, I understand it may depend on the variety, but what would be the ideal temp?
If you really want to grow Hoyas wildly fast, a temperature of high 80s to low 90s during the day and low 70s at night will produce incredible results, but doing that inside a home is problematic.
@@DougChamberlainVTHoyas thank you! What is your ideal humidity?
@@lotusn4175 75 to 85% and you could watch them grow!
@@DougChamberlainVTHoyas thank you, your website/videos have been so helpful to me in understanding Hoyas better
What kind of wire do you buy?
