      The Jeffsy is sick....My buddy just got the Commencal and is totally digging it. I say either bike is a winner with the Commencal leaning more towards someone want to ride more difficult terrain and the Jeffsy a little less tech.

      I'm more confused by what exactly is a trail bike these days, there was one bike in their shop brought video that had 150mm travel with a 160mm fork, that's what my old 2017 trek slash had, and that's an enduro bike, my norco fluid 29er has 120mm travel with a 130mm fork, and I consider that a trail bike, it must be especially confusing for a new rider getting into mountain biking.

      @@shasty3139 XC was probably not the best wording but I can see where he is coming from. The Jeffsy has very progressive suspension so even though the geometry is closer to an enduro bike the suspension can feel a bit harsh and ramp up too quickly when dealing with more technical/rougher sections (can feel like it has less travel, i.e. more XC), where other bikes can absorb rougher sections with more control and feel less harsh through using more travel and ramping up later in the stroke.

    How about ditch this Paul character and just have Alan review consumer direct and shop bought bikes lol. Nobody wants to hear people employed in this industry complain about every little thing because they're used to riding a $7500 bike. Most of us would love to have any of these. Tbh, I'd love to even have rear suspension.

      @TheRoadrunner11 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I was laughing at how they kept calling high end forks as noodly! My fork is 140 mm with 32 mm diameter. What would they call that? XD
      Btw as someone who just got his first full suspension, I can say it's a good choice if you like riding more aggressive terrain. Though I can't decide if it's because of the suspension or the all mountain geometry. I only had an XC Radon till this point which was super efficient for going the distance and up the hill, equally super easy to go over the bars when things go wrong downhill xD

      @markbails9896 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@James-yy4vl to be fair they said the YT was "more toward an XC Trail bike than an Enduro Trail bike" or something to that effect. And I can see why because typically you'd expect an Enduro to be 160:160 or above and a trail bike sits between XC and Enduro. I think he could have just said "a classic trail bike" instead tbh.

    • @markbails9896
      @markbails9896 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also I discovered the reason the Spectral was left out is because of it being 27.5 and reviewed many times previously. Fair enough though I think it would have been better to leave it in as a bench mark or canon for a great trail bike. And they left in the Vitus even though that was unchanged.

    Too much focus on components. There are tons of individual components, this is a BIKE review, I’d rather have more information on how composed the geometry is, how the frame feels, what the characteristics of the rear suspension linkage is. Each manufacturer makes a ton of bikes at different price points, people can just choose the spec level they want according to their preferences, so stop griping about components.

    • @chrismitchell4665
      @chrismitchell4665 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Exactly! I don't give a fudge what tire compound came on the bike. We're all changing our tires (and grips and saddles) anyway. Don't review a bike based on the personal preference items. How good is the platform? Also, a bike that won last year and 2 years ago with the same componentry suddenly has all sorts of issues?

  • @stevowyeth

    The Radon looks like an aggressive, pre-21 HeiHei, which I still argue is one of the most underrated short travel 29rs around.....and a hell of a deal! Full Carbon, XT, Fox 34, 27lbs....all for around $4500 US. I picked my green machine up in the off season two yrs ago for just $3300. I saved so much, I couldn’t resist adding a Big Honzo to my ticket for a measly $1100 more. Still Love both!
    Direct to consumer is great, but if you’re patient, somewhat flexible and willing to put in a little time, you can often find equally good deals....if not better....at a shop.

    One criteria you should have before you even add a bike into these tests is dropper seat post drop.
    Why waste your time testing 3 year old bikes?
    On a medium for instance a minimum of 160mm dropper spec’ed, that still fits the target height or the rider.

    Just some constructive criticism: Dive deeper into the bike like kinematics, flip-chip designs, linkage, etc. I just watched your other video reviewing top trail bikes of the year Part 1 and it was much better done. At the end of the day, you can rank any bike you want number 1, and ill respect that but it's hard to accept your choice when it seems to be based on small things. In part 1 video, the presenter went into every detail about each bike and why they were bad and why they were good and I LOVED IT. This video seemed a bit more opinion-based. I may be biased seeing as I have the Jeffrey 2020 comp dune grey so take my words with a grain of salt... I'm not trying to attack at all. Just some advice. Happy riding! Keep pumping out the great content!!

  • @MrSamulele0
    @MrSamulele0 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    On the Escarpe, yes it has a high BB but really don't understand when he says that it pushes the weight forward because has a long chain stay so it gets uneasy going DH. As far as I know bikes are getting longer wheel base (over 1200mm for medium!) for stability on DH, and we've seen DH bikes at world cup level with chain stays extensions. I have an Escarpe VRX and had 150mm up front so maybe that extra cm helps with not feeling what he's describing. Not sure what the logic is in what he's saying. Also I don't see any of those bikes fitting a 170mm dropper, I see 120-150mm and that's what the Escarpe can fit.

    • @MBRmagazine
      @MBRmagazine  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Imagine you're standing on a bike in the neutral riding position. Now extend the rear centre while keeping the front centre the same. Your weight will now be further forward between the axles than it was before (everything else being equal). Now raise the BB, and your weight will be higher and further forward. Tip the bike forward as it would be going downhill, and you're weight balance will be too far over the front, so you will have to move your body weight further back to compensate. This will give you less range of motion and control over the bike.

    • @MrSamulele0
      @MrSamulele0 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MBRmagazine thanks for the explanation but I see that it works if you keep a neutral riding position which is an unlikely position a riders assume when going DH. With a DH body weight position the center of the mass is biased on the rear wheel and a longer chainstais helps counter the wheely effect in the front, so that's the explanation you may be looking for but that is a positive not as a negative. As I mentioned in my post, I cannot agree that a long bike gets nervous DH, especially the Escarpe which has the same wheelbase of a YT Capra, a Transition Sentinel, or an Ibis Ripmo which are known to be some of the most stable trail/AM rigs out there. I do a lot of bike park and steep mountain trails and the Escarpe calls for speed down hill. Also, the rear axle path is backward and forward, something you find in bikes like the new Specialized Enduro. I think I recall your review from 2018 saying that the Escarpe "urges" when the trail points down... And it is true!
      I find the high BB is more of an issue during cornering but that can get fixed by a good body position. I do appreciate the clearing of a high BB when I do mountain adventures hopping over rocks and trunks and having less pedal strikes than with my old Yeti Sb5.5 or Pivot Mach 429 Trail.
      You are absolutely right when you say that the fix for this bike would be addressing the seat tube. It needs steepening to a 76-78 degrees.
      Cheers!

    • @MBRmagazine
      @MBRmagazine  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have a watch of the world's top DH riders, such as Loic Bruni. Loic doesn't change his body position/weight balance relative to the axles much at all. He keeps his head above the bars and stays low to the bike for maximum range of motion - always returning to that set neutral position. Also, the bike doesn't want to wheelie when you're going down hill, it wants to endo. Bikes want to wheelie uphill - which is why hillclimb dirt bikes have very long swingarms. If you have an Escarpe and you like it, then that's all that matters. Remember, we awarded it trail bike of the year a couple of years ago. Cheers.

    • @MrSamulele0
      @MrSamulele0 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MBRmagazine I see your point and yes you are right abut DH riders position; however, DH bikes geometries are made to put the rider in that body position. A trail bike is supposed to be an all around and on steep DH you have to shift your body over the rear wheel to counter the endo (or OTB). Ive ridden for 30 years I had Specialized, Yetis, Pivots, and Scotts, the Escarpe was a gamble purchase based on the low price and top shelf components. I used it at bike parks, local trails, Enduro trails and all-mountain adventures. This bike gave me huuuge confidence on jumps, drops, shutes, rock gardens. And yes, my purchase was also based on your review from a few years ago which seems in contradiction with this one. Well, let's end it here, disagreement w/out being disagreable is what make the mTb world better than many others. Keep up with your good work! Cheers

They also both have piggy back shocks, something you don't even see on many trail bikes, let alone an xc bike, so I think it's pretty unfair to make the claim, it feels more of an xc bike. A very stiff frame is actually a bad thing and can be hard to ride because the bike will get deflected off obstacles (not every bump is hit square-on). Most top racers dial in a level of flex that gives them steering precision but lets the back end find the path of least resistance to a certain degree.

      36 is now defined by Fox as all-mountain, whatever that means. Really it depends on the travel and wheel size - a 34 at 150mm travel for a 29er (which Fox doesn't sell aftermarket) is pretty noodly, whereas a 130 or 140mm 27.5in fork has a lot more bushing overlap and less leverage, so tends to work well.

A decent pair of tyres might set you back over £100, so it's not insignificant.

  • @TeamCykelhold
    @TeamCykelhold 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok, so wall of text. I love that you separated this categories in direct sales and brick and mortar bikes. This way to distinguish is great because doing it by price always means DS get better components and BM gets faster service and I feel that in the end you really are either DS or a BM buyer, depending heavily on mechanical skills and if you know what you want already. I think a really good review makes one able to choose a bike based on personal preference. on to the not so good parts. I want information and I love getting some opinions, but I dislike getting outright conclusions if they aren't based on some kind of initial discussion and let me decide if the conclusion goes in line with my own preferences. I feel MBR need more than a single guys opinion on these bikes. This review wasn't the greatest, seems the reviewer just put his personal preferences on top of 4 great bikes and chose the one that suited his riding style most. For example, the frame compliance. So, now we know that often alloy backends are more compliant than carbon, but this wasn't mentioned properly by the reviewer. The correlation between compliance and material wasn't mentioned, and since you can also get an alloy version of Jeffsy why not give the viewer some insights on material choice? Also, now that the Jeffsy isn't a trailbike but an XC bike, is Izzo a gravel bike? Just wondering. Trailbikes are supposedly the most versatile bike, yet it seems the reviewer really caters a very small segment of people who have access to the most burly trails imaginable. Otherwise I don't think Jeffsy can possibly be put in the XC category. I just don't think this review hits the mark. I think it's alright to say that the geo is slightly dated if you feel that, the HA is a bit steep by modern standards or something founded in objective reality, but I feel that just stating it's for XC misses the whole point of trailbikes by a mile. On a technical note, you should try to get a better camera and record/upload in 4k. Sounds is really good, but image quality is potato. Anyway, enjoyed the review for the laughs and it's always nice with a new opinion pieces.

    Nothing in this video would suggest a fork being overwhelmed... I'm sorry but all these bikes are "over biked" for the trails shown.

      We just used those trails to shoot the video on. They weren't the trails we used exclusively for the testing.

      @@MBRmagazine it would be really cool if you could mount a go pro or some other smallish camera to see how various suspension works on a variety of trails. Like zoomed in on the suspension action paired with maybe the bikes g forces. Some systems do well with big hits, others great on chatty stuff and so on.
      Most cell phones have accerelometers in them and you'd probably can strap an Android to the frame to get a good comparison.
      It's tough to watch a video of someone riding a trail that wasn't in the test and anecdotally speaking to the attributes of the bikes suspension (it's highly subjective to the rider). Just isn't very convincing to the viewer of your video. I'm a dork though so whatever's.

    Why seperate shop brought and direct sale bikes? Are the big boys afraid the online bikes are going to smash them out of the ballpark?
