    Not only was Taylor animated about the bark ripping monster you sharpened, he picked up the saw after you sat it down and he cut a couple of rounds with it himself. The slow mo video I took doesn't do the sharpening job any justice. The saw sort of " fell through" the wood like it had no resistance. The 400 with the bark box was a mean machine.....

    I use to sit and want grandpa, Booker T Russell, sharpen chainsaws, skill saw blades, etc… all the farmers in the Mississippi Delta would bring their plows in the winter for him to sharpen (blacksmith) he was a master at sharpening anything with a edge. Drew,Mississippi 🙏🏻🇺🇸💯🤙🏻

    You could have a good side hustle around here just sharpening chains. I dont think anybody around here local does it anymore. I am stihl trying to learn how to sharpen a chain. I am getting better and videos like this are a huge help. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge. This kind of video would be great for you to do on rainy days when you just cant get out and work ( just sayin ).

    Tim good job on the sharpening instructions.👍
    I never understood why people file over a depth gauge. File away the raker not the gauge, save those files.
    Good job on the double-gullett or opening up the gullett, comes handy in the middle of the cut when most of the chain is in the log. Something that is done on square filing as you mentioned.
    Nothing beats hand filing, even the grinder comes up short, your video clearly shows that.
    Happy and safe cutting. 💪🪓🌲

    I always tryin keep extra chain with me when im out cutting firewood. Store them in tupperware sandwhich boxes in the truck. An extra bar or extra chainsaw is a good idea too i think. Obviously im no professional, just a guy who enjoys cuttin firewood.

    Those file guide tool plate snap on thingys are great for helping maintain the file depth and proper hook. The folks I train use them and have lots of success, it’s a youth corps. I have a complicated filing technique and I like the husky roller guide for mindless filing and getting a bad chain back in order, mostly I free hand in the field with a depth gage plate for my rakers. I started learning to file at ten and got decent by 15, I really got it from a logger I went to school with. That was over twenty years ago now, I should make a video it would be funny. Be well Tim

      That Husqvarna roller guide is pretty good with that x-cut chain.with light pressure it seems like you can sharpen the chain faster and more consistent than doing it freehand. I was impressed with it.

    I think your the only guy on TH-cam that sharpens the way I do it w orks great. Most are to proud to use Oregon file guide. A few years ago when my son was logging and hand filing with out guide. Picked up one of my saws said holy s__t that's cutting good. I said no different than normal. He's used Oregon file guide ever since now his saws cut as good as mine.

    I’ve seen a lot of different ways to sharpen a chain by different folks and seen their chips flying out the back. Your method may take extra steps but hands down looks like a better result. Thanks Tim great video.

    We allways sharpened 3\8 with a 3\16 I think you can put more hook in the top chisel! Who knows but thars how I was taught as a boy lol I can do pretty good but I cut up on a yard for a long time I learned the hard but best way! I had a 4 ft stick and a ax to beat dirt off the logs with! And prayed I had a loader man to hold em up for me made it alot easier.in winter I've wades mud knee deep cutting logs up with a super pro 105 ? Remember those times? Dad hauled 5 ft pulpwood back in the 60s 70s to champion we sawed it up with bow saws! Gear driven bow shaped bars would cut dull!!

    Never like the old style file guides but the new Stihl guide with the taker file does actually work very well. That said if your confident and have a good eye it's a helluva lot quicker to eyeball it.
    The best tip I have is run the saw up and get plenty of chain lube over those teeth so it lubes the file. Your files will last a lot longer.

      Exposes the side of the tooth more. IMHO, just file the raker down an extra lick and will get better results and takes less time.

    Like to run that saw to see how your file job cuts.
    My buddy Dave files with a 7/32, and angles it down at least 40° rather than level across or 10° like I have read is correct.
    His saws cut like a mother. I mean, dang!
    And they stay sharp a long time.
    He does it on a pickup tail gate, takes him 2 minutes, tops.
    He logged for 30 years.

    • @cotontop3
      @cotontop3  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have occasionally on 325 chains and u use a 5/32 file. I don’t on the smaller chains. It doesn’t seem like it helps near as much on smaller chains as it does on the 3/8

    • @cferguson6688
      @cferguson6688 ปีที่แล้ว

      no "hidden secret, just exposes the the tooth more. Sort of like doing and extra lick on your raker, its the size of the file that really does the work.
