I used to change blades on the grinders at work. For plastic used a tap and die to clean the old loctite off

I know this is an old video but to comment on the blades coming loose. About a year before you made this video we got the blades flipped as part of the service on our chipper. Its a vermeer 1500. Anyways were about an hour into the day with 1 ton of brush chipped when one of those blades decided it was quittin time. It banged around and blew out the bottom of the machine and shot out pretty far. Thankfully missed everyone and everything but it was absolutely terrifying to run up as it was baging around to shut the machine down. It was after shutting it off when it blew up the bottom

Yeah, if the manufacturer says to use loctite, use loctite and torque it to spec. Because again, you right about a knife coming loose while chipping. There's a few such videos here on YT that show the aftermath and how the hardened blade shot through the side of the chip chamber. Bolt bits kicked out. Whole unit was trash but the operator was fine. Scared em enough to likely wet themselves, but they didn't lose a finger, hand, arm, leg, or their lives when the knives let go. I think there's a video of a really big disk style, like whole tree thirty inch size. When it's flywheel cutter cracked and let go. Made the whole trailer jump up ten feet and twenty to the left. Blew the cover right off the chip chamber housing.

Those bolts are grade 8 right Tim, everything has held up very well, pretty cool to watch you change those, if there's one thing, tree work is always needing done all the time, thanks for sharing Tim god bless 🌲🌲💪💪🇺🇸🇺🇸

    Hi Tim:
    Great video!
    I might suggest (2) things:
When you torque bolts, etc, go over them twice..... Re-check the torque.
When you are chipping, do you have a metal detector to check suspect tree trunks?
I seen an old tree, one time, that someone hung a hammock from this tree, and used a 1/2 inch grade 8 lag bolt screwed into the tree!.. Hit something like that, and the machine may come apart! At any rate, you would be in the market for a new set of underwear!
I had a really hard, something, that just about went through the impellor housing on my chipper!
    Best Wishes And GOD BLESS!
    Gary

I have to believe that you take better care of your equipment than a lot of tree guys out there. There was one taking down a tree accost the street from us that I wondered if his chipper was going to make it! Looked like it had been in a war and ran like crap. My wife had to hold me back from going over there and tuning that thing up!

Keep doing what your doing let no material build behind the knife and replace the bolts after specified torquing you’ll be golden. Also don’t ignore that bed knife, makes it work easy 👍😆

CT3 we ran a 8 blade with 2 stationary knife's, I set up s.o.p to retorque after running a half hour or up to normal operating temperature. We used to have blade's resharpened but found out cheaper to buy new, I don't know if that holds true now. 38 years running " Hog " that's what we called it.

Interesting they have the knives the other way up vs Vermeer. They run with the bevel towards the drum. On the machine I have, I've used a scraper (like painters) to clean the mating surfaces with the idea to keep them flat as possible.

A tree grew around a piece of rearbar an we sent it into a bandit chipper just like this one and it literally sheered all the bolts off every blade. An the blades went threw the shout an threw the chip box into the cab. That wasn't the worst part the worst part was that loose metal started getting blown threw threw the walls around the drum am shuet. My boss ran to the control panel to attempt to pull the clutch an turn the key off but unfortunately was hit 4 times the worst impact was in his neck an 3 in his chest. Long story short he almost died an bled to death so be very very careful about every piece of anything you send threw them feed wheels...

I'm unfamiliar with the Bandit drum chipper . Does it also have a shear bar ? Changing knives on drum chippers I"m familiar with meant check/resetting knife/shear bar clearance . Great video work Tim ! Yeah cleaning both knives and drum seats is an essential step as skipping it can cause detorquing of the knife bolts . BTDTGTTS

  • @davie2606

    • @stevenwescott1422
      @stevenwescott1422 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I believe so. In chippers they call it a “bed knife “ an adjustable bar that sets depth of cut. At least that’s what we call them in the northeast.

    • @davie2606

I would take a 4 by 4 drill 4 holes just a little bit bigger than the bolts so you can put them back in the same holes they came out of.

40 hours is an eternity on knives. When I worked in the woods on a chipping crew we did the knives everyday. You could tell when they were getting full based on how long it took to load a truck. Yeah we definitely didn’t do lock Tite and we just used the airgun. Of course we did it between rounds of trucks and you don’t have that pressure.
