It would but realistically we all know both teams will progress no further than the group stage due to the gulf in class between Tiers 1 and 2.
Only about 6 teams are capable of winning the WC. Says a lot about Rugby’s desire to grow and expand the game when the WC is the only time lesser nations are showcased and usually heavily beaten by more superior teams. Then it’s game over for 4 years and more of the same old, same old.

@@winco68 yea but as usual it's about the money. They won't just throw money at these nations until they offer viable money back. Not only that but rapidly expanding competitions and chucking money at them is sure way to go bankrupt

    • @winco68

@@potatowaffle5653 They need investment at grass roots level in order to be in a position to offer money back. Without investment nothing changes. Just continue with the Status Quo year after year.
It would be nice to have a European competition every 4 years in between WCs where the secondary teams at least get the chance to ply their trade in front of larger audiences and it will increase interest. The REC is currently low key and in need of greater exposure.

Grassroots is what build better rugby athletes (seeing the first crop springing up in the US - check MLR) Italy's age groups are finally bearing fruit which has JUST started to seep into the senior team finally! Imagine if the lions tour was moved to a different year so that there could be continental cups in it’s place! That’s what rugby’s missing! You could keep the prestige of the 6 nations, but introduce a more diverse competition between other European nations! It might not be very competitive at first, but representation is what the 6 nations lacks, and that’s a good way to bring exposure to other countries

It’s great to see these Second Tier teams playing competitive Rugby. It must be very frustrating for them to know that even though they’re going to the World Cup they’ll never be allowed to compete at the top level in Europe.
The REC tournament is in need of major investment and the 6 Nations needs to introduce a relegation play off between itself and REC. That is fair why should Italy finish bottom every year without fear of relegation whilst Spain or Georgia finish top of REC and can go nowhere?
I would love to see a European Championship as in football where all teams of Europe can compete and the elitist 6 Nations is consigned to history where it belongs.

    • @teocarre4026

problem with doing something like the euro is that the skill gap in rugby is massive. any team under the europe championship would get annihilated, like triple diget points to nil. As for the teams in the championship they would also get spanked, georgia even had a chance to prove themselves with the autumn nations cup and they were dominated the whole way so i just dont think theyre ready. though i do agree there should be a promotion/relegation match every year.

@@pietrocosentino6636 Yes that is true but in relation to France you’re talking about the amateur era when people played for recreation not their career. You cannot compare that to now when Tier 1 and most of Tier 2 is fully professional.
No other professional sport would allow a team such as Italy to remain in the top division with a record such as theirs without threat of relegation.

the main problem is that Six Nations is a private competition so its also an economic reason. Overall Italian team always beated Georgia, Romania and Spain in the past so they demonstrated to be superior. The fact Italy lost so many games in Six Nations doesn't mean they are worse then the other European teams. I really don't know which would be the result in an Italy-Spain match but the gap is really big with them

    • @winco68
      @winco68 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Yes you are correct. Rugby Union is stuck in the past with a closed mind mentality. They would rather try and maintain the historical traditions of the 6 Nations than open up the tournament to other teams and expand the game in Europe.
The 6N hierarchy are still living in the amateur era. Personally I would scrap the 6 Nations and replace it with a European Championship of the top 16 teams in Europe. Before that can happen there must be investment in grass roots rugby and getting players into professional clubs to improve the standard.
There is a lot of public interest for Rugby in the Tier 2 nations but it doesn’t get the exposure it deserves and remains low key. ☹️

Georgia will not play in the VI nations. The competition is closed (ring fenced).
Even top finisher of Rugby Europe Championship cannot progress to the top flight of Europe.
It’s most unfair but there are options. Introduce a play off between REC winner and last placed in 6N to see who is promoted/relegated.
If this will not be permitted lobby to have the REC invested in to improve the standard of the second Tier.
Personally I would scrap the 6 Nations altogether and have a European Championship every 4 years in between the World Cup as in football. I’m sure the standard of Tier 2 teams would improve exponentially and grow the game extensively throughout Europe. At the moment the sport is stagnant and going nowhere.
