Thank you for these videos. This is a great resource for students to help them understand why a beginner student is often not successful when purchasing a $70 violin on amazon. I see so many frustrated students each week with cheap instruments. In my experience, 80% of the students who quit do so because of an instrument that is so poor their efforts are not reciprocated.
I think this is an excellent video that gives me precise dimensions on setting up a violin. I was a machinist and retired as a quality technician and we lived by accurate information and precise dimensions. you demonstrated that in your video. excellent
Very good info. Been restoring for 40 years, and found if u can measure thickness of top plate in bridge area, and use that as distance for setback of soundpost from bridge will result in excellant tone. Thanks for your excellant video.
Excellent ! So clear concise and to the point. Can't believe I learned so much with exact facts in such a short time. Thank you. Subbed and hit the alarm
I got my first violin, a Cecilio CVN-300 and I've had some issues with it already: slipping tuning pegs, one that was cracked, which they replaced with pegs that are too big to fit and I had to sand down and make work. It seems pretty close to your measurements, but I probably would have been better off to buy one of your beginner violins because you check all this stuff ahead of time. I'll bet you don't ship cracked tuning pegs either. I must admit that I'm enjoying learning how fiddles are set up and I wouldn't have done that if it arrived in excellent condition.

I trust trust trust you guys! New sub! You’re the first I’ve seen on TH-cam today the bridge is “slanted” I’ve noticed my bridge slips / will kind of lean forward toward the fingerboard when I tune especially when I don’t start from the outside in,,, I juuust got this violin for Christmas and had to set it up... but I haven’t played since I was 16 or 15 and I am 23 now... so I had to look up a few things! I remember not having a completely straight bridge... especially on my teachers expensive strings!! But thank you! !!
We're so glad you found us! Yes, bridges always want to lean, tilt, or warp. Keeping an eye on it and making little adjustments when they start to get out of place will keep it happy for a long time. Here's another video about it if you're interested: th-cam.com/video/80WMoAgwJTs/w-d-xo.html
You don't check bow clearance (arch) across the strings or string height from the fingerboard? Also, we don't always slam our tailpiece to the saddle, we set it so that the string length between the bridge and tailpiece is a specific fraction to aid in sympathetic tones. Depending on the fine tuners or lack thereof, the tailpiece isn't always slammed to the saddle.
These are great things to check as well. Unfortunately it's not within the scope of this video to cover every detail of a perfect setup. Also it's worth pointing out that measurements and ratios are a good starting point, but instruments can be finnicky, and sometimes you have to veer from the rule in order to get a desirable sound.
Excellent video. Thank you very much... Since i am personally hampered by living in the far west-end of Bangkok (Thailand), and decent luthiers are far far away, it would be great if you would be willing to produce a parallel video explaining the proper measurements, vis-a-vis the numbers provided in this video, for a viola with a 16.5 inch body-length. That would be highly appreciated... Of course, i would certainly not object if you were to open a new branch office in west Bangkok.... Hahaha. What a pipe-dream. Do you think i could bamboozle you into accepting that the nearby College of Music at Mahidol University, and the local Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra (in which i play) would have enough string students to keep you busy? With a veritable monopoly, you could make a killing financially. Hehehe... Seriously, though, the situation with regards to quality lutherie here IS a bit of a drag. And bringing in your nifty accessories into the country while dealing with officious Thai customs is no picnic either.... Sigh.^^
The bridge on that one seems to be leaning back towards the tailpiece a bit, or is that an illusion? I wonder how you deal with the high humidity in Florida? Humidity can cause the hide glue to weaken its bond, and in some cases has caused Violins to actually come apart.
I bought violence supplies from you just recently. Glad I found your shop. But I've got a question about violin bridges I've seen something that says self-adjusting, prefitted , semi-fited , high , and low what do these mean ?
i love that string tail roof shaped and i wish i can change mine that is a regular bombé one .. what could you tell me about the roof shaped ? does it make some difference in sound ? thanks
Nice video! I have a question, the height of strings from the board does influence the vibrato? if you lower the bridge and the strings are closer to the board the strings vibrate less and your vibrato is less expressive? thanks!
goodnight I saw in the video that you said that it leaves 1 mm in the center of the bridge foot, correct? The soul of my violin is 3 mm. One question, can I leave the soul 1 mm away and I gain power? What are the gains by leaving 1 mm of distance? thank you very much
Very beautiful violin, but for me all the right-handed ones are unfavorable because I play alternately, the bow in the left hand and the right one operates on the fingerboard, best regards🙂
Hi! There are left-handed violins 😃 Here are two, if you would like to check them out: fiddlershop.com/products/fiddlerman-left-handed-concert-violin-outfit fiddlershop.com/products/fiddlerman-left-handed-violin
@@Fiddlershop I come from Poland, my question concerns the transport and proper protection of the instrument, will I have to return the instrument to the luthier to check the instrument or can I play it immediately after delivery???? thank you.
There are three ways of doing this. One is to open the upper bout, loosen the top at the block and to fit a shim under the neck root and top of the violin, then to re-glue. It's the easiest way but you almost need a tutorial or be taught to do this successfully. I'll ask the luthier to make a video on the next neck reset. The other two ways have to do with removing the fingerboard, thinning the side by the scroll but this requires some careful plaining. The most difficult way involves taking off the neck and changing the neck block, then refitting.
I'd say that 27mm is very acceptable. I've played and re-angled a number of instruments and for a violin I'd 28/29mm is actually on the high side. More importantly than the elevation (projection), the string angle makes the biggest difference. 158° is what the angle should be over the bridge. With and instrument with "normal" arching, if the overstand is set to textbook measurements (6.5mm on the G) and the elevation is set to 29, you will have an enormous string angle and the instrument will sound strident. It seem very common for American workshops to set instruments up with a steep string angle compared to European workshops (like one that I work in) which 26.5mm is the norm. It is disadvantageous to think that you'll get more from your instrument by increasing these measurements, when in theory it puts more pressure on the instrument and actually strangles it to give a harsh quality (usually with wolf notes). When reangling the neck on an instrument you have to consider the arching and set out the most appropriate overstand to elevation relationship to achieve the correct string angle, while at the same time securing the structural rigidity of the instrument. A higher overstand to flatten the string angle can cause deformation in the arch with particularly high arched instruments, so experience and skill will determine the correct measurements for the instrument.
So sorry about the delayed response! We obviously missed some comments!! We do the setups for all instruments that leaves our workshop, excluding the Cecilio instruments. Those are shipped directly from Cecilio's warehouse.
