  • Over the last 25 years, obesity has gotten worse and worse across the globe, specifically in North America. Fast food consumption is at an all-time-high, and this is no mistake. Companies like McDonald's and Burger King have designed a system to get you hooked, starting at a young age, and keep you hooked forever. Let me tell you about fast food - the addiction created by design.

Your body will be craving the good nutrients it needs? Any evidence for this? What is the mechanism for this? I have always thought it was more related to speed of digestion (gastrocolic reflex, lack of fiber), high refinement (glycemics), and acclimation.

My parents kept me off fast food when I was young, so i had my first taste of it when I was a teenager. When I tasted it and felt the dopamine, my first thought was "oh, so this is why so many people get hooked. I wont let this happen to me." So note to parents out there, do not let your children try fast food without explaining to them what it does to you first.

I had McDonals twice at a childrens birthday and it tasted poisenous. And these JunkFood franchises STINK.
I don't think anyone who doesn't eat that trash from early childhood likes it.
I am 21 and still only eat homecooked meals. Most restaurants use convenience meals instead of cooking real food in their kitchen, even tve pricy ones. Totally not worth it.

I'm 59. I grew up in the 70's and 80's. Places like Burger King, McDonalds, Taco Bell and KFC, were OCCAISIONAL indulgences, not places that you went to on a regular basis. These foods are fine in moderation but the rest of the time, I balance it out with home cooked foods like roasted chicken, fish, fruits, salads and vegetables. As a former athlete, I've learned to make sure that you keep your diet in balance. I live in Philly, the home of Cheese steaks and hoagies. When I get a craving for these things, I have one but limit it to once a month. Same thing with pizza, or dessert .On July 4th, I'll treat myself to a Texas Tommy ; basically a hot dog covered in bacon and cheese, or a chili dog; but I have that only on the holiday. There are ways to enjoy these guilty pleasures and not do major damage to your health but it requires discipline. Another option, would be to try and replicate your fast food favorites at home. TH-cam has recipes that re-create Taco Bell, Chickfil-A, McDonalds and other favorite menu items. When I worked at McDonalds, I discovered that their "special sauce" for the Big Mac, is a variation of Thousand Island dressing. Get back into the kitchen and have fun with developing your own spin on these menu items. Not only will you be healthier, but spending time making meals with friends or loved ones, creates memories that will be healthy for you emotionally as well.

What always creeps me out is when people comment on videos about TrashFood:
"My best childhood memories are when my poor as could be parents took me to a JunkFood franchise!"
Creepy because that creates a very high level if addiction and it shows the parents had very questionable values.
Creepy that we live in a culture were some people rather spend money on making billionaires richer than creating experiences of value for the child.
I am lucky, my family is against JunkFood and I learned how to cook healthy meals. My parents rather spend their money on activities like outdoor museum and zoos and toy exhibitions than making me an addict of stuff tvat causes cancer.

Excellent video and a topic that only RFK Jr. is speaking out about. Obesity is an epidemic and all this processed junk food and fast food is at the core of the problem. We subsidize farmers to grow (and not grow) corn, wheat and soybeans. This drives down input costs for processed food companies and thus they maximize the use of the least expensive inputs. So we have highly processed foods full of white flour and corn syrup etc. I consume only unprocessed foods and power walk everyday. I feel great!

I used to eat fast food two or three times a week until I realized how much I was spending on it. It takes a bare minimum of $15, often closer to $20 and sometimes more, to get enough food to fill me up at any fast food place nowadays. When I saw a bank statement earlier this summer and counted $259 in fast food expenses for a single month, I decided I was going to start eating at home whenever I could help it. Lately I've only been getting fast food about twice a month. My bank account is starting to recover but it is going to take months.
Fast food prices have been creeping up little by little over the past 20 years or so, to the point where they have at least doubled with consumers hardly noticing. I'm like the proverbial frog who just now realizes that he is being boiled alive. Remember Subway's $5 footlong? It seems like you were seeing ads for it just a few years ago, but on my last visit to Subway about a week ago, the cheapest footlong they had was well over $10. Likewise, McDonald's "Dollar Menu" has become fast food history. It has really gotten out of hand, I could barely pay my bills back in June and was forced to start living frugally. Going to any fast food outlet now feels like splurging. It isn't much of a stretch to say that Taco Bell will be considered an upscale restaurant in the future, just like in Demolition Man.
And as prices skyrocket, the sizes of some of the food items seem to be doing just the opposite. At the aforementioned Subway, the sub I got felt noticeably smaller than how I remember a footlong sub. The bun felt more like a hot dog bun. My sub was $17 and this was such a huge ripoff. It seems as if the practice of shrinkflation has now extended to fast food as well. Will not be going back to Subway any time soon.

A calorie doesn't equal to the calorie. The same amount of calories have different impact on your body if you eat sugar or protein & fats. Just take a glucometer and you see different blood sugar spikes. Your insulin release decides who to do with the calories - to burn them or to store them as a body fat

And the reason it is, when you get past the cover story of “cost”, is an ugly trip down a massive rabbit hole.
But I expect the junk food industry to collapse within 10 years.

Wasn't Supersize me considered the wrong way to conduct an experiment ? Something about the numbers were inaccurate, and the main guy behaved as if the impact was worse than what it was? (Not that eating fast food for every meal, everyday is correct, just in terms of presenting information in a documentary)

I grew up working in a family restaurant and we served ice cream both soft serve and scoop but along that we served hamburgers and hotdogs with french fries and corndogs of course . I ate a big mac when I was young and was hooked and loved it . I tried last year at 2 different locations and the big mac at one had lettuce you could see through and it was very dry , the second had patties that looked aged and the bottom part of the bun was like a cookie (stale) . I will never eat their fries or big macs again . The problem lies in the employees , they can't keep a good one so they rehire a lot and it dilutes their food product . Most of them sadly are children . Good luck Ray you fouled up an American classic .

First of all my compliments for your efforts to make a video to really help the people, but the main problem is that people got an i.q. under 10 and most one think "oh is good what he says" and than they forget because is Sunday and they brought the children on new fast food, also here in Italy, I live in a little town every Monday Farmers sell theirs products but people prefer bad food because "life is so hard, why am I should also care about the food?" It's sad see junk food that still rules in a period where everyone can see the side effects of this

I try to stay away from fast food, but I didn’t want to be a partypooper, and I was a bit hungry, so we all went out for some McDonald’s proposed to me by the rest of the guys. Since then, I had acne breakouts all over my face, and been craving junkfood. I try to go for less harmful alternatives, mainly options that help me hit my protein goals. Stay away if you can guys, I’m going back to eggs, steak, chicken, pork, fish, with quality carbohydrates and tasty veggies.

Supersize Me has turned out to be a hoax. The creator admitted he was a longtime alcoholic before dying recently, including while he was filming Supersize Me. The effects of the McDonald’s diet on his health were extremely exaggerated due to his alcoholism. If you watch it again, the doctors in the movie even raise some eyebrows about his results from his physicals, saying they didn’t expect a change in diet to be so influential on his declining health.
Not saying fast food isn’t bad for you, but citing Supersize Me is not reliable or accurate evidence.

well they once had the TV monopoly today everyone has his own TV channels, so you cant influence people that easy anymore the time is over, you can only influence people if you are a good restaurant and friends recommend it further. good means a perfect mixture of Price and Performance that is individually different, so just believe in god and do your work daily in a meaningful way to become rewarded.

so fast food is a problem, but not THE problem. most americans dont eat fast food everyday, maybe not even more than once a week. fast food is expensive and most americans are living paycheck to paycheck and dont have much money. whats truly making americans obese is the food in the grocery stores.
