@@tony.nextlevelrides Good work, I have learnt so much from your videos. Just got an e70 30d with 230k kms and your car inspires me at 450k kms. Just done rebuilding my injectors
Hi Eddy, are you in Kenya? Want to ask you for some advice with your experience on m57. Got some parts coming that I need to fit and then I'm looking for a remap...could you give me some recommendations especially for a timing belt change which is above my pay grade 😂😂😂 would appreciate your advice? Thank you sir
The day I got my car back after getting injector 6 replaced on mine, I drove around with a huge smile on my face also… Limp mode is great because I would have been without a car without it, but at the same time, it sucks.
I just found your channel as i just bought a X5 3.0D 2010 MSport with 150000miles. (UK). Its running great. Started watching lots of x5 repair videos and you guys are absolutely brilliant. Loved watching this video.
Amazing! I have the same x5 pre LCI with m57 twin turbo. Just bought it recently with 450k km on clock. It leaks some oil on the left side of the engine, will be taking to the mechanic to see what’s the issue. Apart from that it had timing chain changed, two injectors restored, downpipe installed, egr and swirlflap delete, and R90 fuel pump installed. It’s at stage 1 with 335hp. Drives very nicely.
Don't you just love diesels. I do. Bought a Skid steer last year for an "As is" price because it was smoking like a freight train. Got it Cheap enough to replace the engine if need be and still be okay. Engine replacement anticipated at $20K. A turbo and 4 fuel injectors later ($3K) all is good. Nice work. Thanks for the detailed repair video.
Nice to see you have this win. I have the 2006 E53 and exactly the same symptoms developed after six months. Like you I followed a set path of fault finding, but my issue was not one of always being present. In fact it was so intermittent that after 14 months I was ready to sell it in outright disappointment. As a last resort, I took off the engine cover to try and wiggle the electrical leads to the injectors and see if there was any fault...Nada . . Zip! I then had the bright idea of there being a possible vacuum leak as by now, the behavior was mimicking that of a failed coil pack in an SI engine, however, I removed the injector leads and sprayed each one with contact cleaner, let it dry and clipped them back into place, then without the engine cover I took it for a drive. Bloody marvelous, it was a born again evangelist singing hallelujah! For three weeks I drove around without any problems and then I decided to put the engine cover back on before someone decided to borrow it and all was good...UNTIL, the day I really needed it. I headed down the expressway and a small hiccup, hardly noticeable, or was it? Nah I'm just paranoid, then just before the next exit it simply died at 100km/h and then come back to life again. Now I was concerned, but to late I missed that turn off...bugger. Taking the next one irrespective now and return back to home. Grab the other car and get the bloody task done. Now I did think that it was strange that this happened when I put the engine cover on, but it is only a plastic cover, so I shrugged that idea off. I guess I will have to do that vacuum check after all. New gasket seals were ordered and oven clean as well. Mine does not have swirl flaps so that was good and the EGR delete was done as well. I would like to know more about that pipe you fitted through and how you overcame the warning message? Now here is where we find the kicker, early on I had the Turbo pipe burst and a fine oil mist had sprayed all down the left side of the engine bay. Like you, I tend to sit in there when I am working, my back is rooted after 30yrs of infantry type work in the Australian Army and I was not going to bend in to reach the back, so I decided to wash out the engine bay. The thing was that the car always started first go, idled fine...this leads to something LoL! So with the engine running after de-greasing it, I washed the bay out with a bucket of mild soapy water and a brush. As I was washing over the engine cover from the back to the front and from the left hand side, the engine suddenly cut out as I passed over that BMW badge on the cover. I repeated this movement and the same reaction, curious I then took the brush and just let it rest on the badge in the cover, sure enough it stopped the engine. Starting up again was no problem and again I moved the brush over the cover and again it cut out and then resumed. OK, no brush just my hand and I touched the badge carefully, nothing...I applied the slightest pressure and the engine cut and as I released it start ed running normal again. I got the wife to video this and I sent the copy to my Uncle who works on Euro cars and he was baffled at well, he had never seen anything like this before. By now the engine was quite warm so I applied pressure to the very front of the engine cover and it bent down completely, cutting the engine out totally again. Now I had my answer, I started it up one more time, shut the bonnet and turned on the AC to full, as soon as the AC fan for cooling came on the engine began to falter and then it stopped. It seems the plastic cover was getting soft in the heat and combined with the fan and road speed it was bending down and applying pressure to the wires of the number one injector as well as the fuel rail leads. With the sharp bend in them it was probable that they were broken wires and the pressure was enough to cut one cylinder first then the whole fuel rail. I bought some bolts and made a stand off set for the front, to raise the cover from the harness so I could get it to my Uncles garage, a good four hour drive. He made up a new harness using wire of silver and Stainless steel cores wrapped in heat proof silicone outer. Fitted it throughout the whole injector and fuel wiring system and reinforced the engine cover with alloy right angle sections to stop it bending. It hasn't missed a beat since then, but he did tell me that my glow plugs need to be replaced. Injectors are the easy ones, glow plugs are the mongrels. These are always on, part of the anti pollution, preventing unburnt fuel from escaping. They only torque down at 15lb, but the recommendation is to use a torque wrench to undo them set at 18lb (well some figure like that), so that you do not screw them off and have a big hole where the glow plug used to be. Also, the module that controls it is worth changing at the same time. I am yet to get that done. Sorry about the long winded story, but it is hard to explain an intermittent fault and how it was accidentally discovered without all the detail.
man, that was such a weird issue but a great success story none the less!! sometimes the wires get pinched and corrode, it's possible yours just need a good wiggle and cleaning but if it's not missed a beat since, she's fixed if you ask me!!
Just found this channel looking for M57 engine stuff. Got an '05 7 series with an M57, she's got a few issues so I have my TH-cam learning hat on in the hope we can fix the old girl. Love the way you take the time to do things like reading out the torque values as you reassemble, such useful info - thank you 🎉😊
Mate, what is a good idea is to clean the hole before putting the new injector in... any dust, corrosion, small sand speck, would ruin your sealing and installation if you don't clean the hole well... I almost feel like not speaking about injector holes at his point but... Yeah, you get the point :D .
I've been in trucking and logistics for a very long time and I always treat my fuel. If you can get it, get some Hot Shots Secret Stiction Eliminator for the oil and EDT ( Every Day Treatment ) for the fuel. The fuel treatment will clean the system front to back, and the Stiction Eliminator will clean out the carbon in the engine and unstick the piston rings. The product was originally formulated for Ford Powerstrokes to deal with the HEUI injector mechanisms sticking because of carbon contamination ( in essence, the injector actuator where the oil goes in was having a heart attack ). Their products do work.
Lol exactly that back connector for rail pressure or whatever, I forgot to plug in fully once I did my 330d M57, left me sitting on the highway since it got fully disconnected during the drive 🤦
Absolutely second guess professional mechanics. As an example, I work in IT and I second guessed 2 mechanics who couldn't solve leaking swivel hubs on a Landcruiser. The second mechanic persisted in rebuilding both hubs after I told him they had already been rebuilt and the only logical problem was the diff housing. He knew best, ignored my observations and took my money which resulted in leaking hubs again. 3rd mechanic, a differential & drivetrain specialist confirmed my diagnosis and problem fixed with a new diff housing. Bunch of arse clowns I tell ya. Thanks for sharing. Cheers from OZ
Nice job. That engine should keep going for another 450kms. You need to block off the EGR at the exhaust manifold as the EGR cooler can overheat and catch fire.
good to know! this was temporary, I'll definitely get some plugs and block it off at the manifold! it's leaking a touch so it'll get done sooner than later.
I think the fuel line didnt prime after the fuelfilter change. I believe it was to press start button, wait, turn off, and do that 10-20 times to fill the fuel filter and the fuel line.
I done the egr swirl and dpf deletes and mapped it all out the car is 10x better and what a difference. also did glow plugs and plug module and all the oils and filters. the trans and diff oil made a huge difference too. FRM footwell module was expensive. it had corroded through so central locking and reverse cam failed. its also needed a handbrake module and a new AC condenser. all in its expensive to look after but iv never drove a car as good. its insane for size power and handling
For info, those type of hose clamps on the EGR pipe are very common on aircraft turbine engines. Other diesel engines recommend the injector is removed with the engine at operating temp. Do not know if that would help here. I am about to do a set of preheaters on my N57 shortly but have not replaced any injectors on either of my M57's yet but they have not got the KM's of yours. Here in Australia, all LCI E70's (after 2010 to 2013) all have the later N57 engine and the ZF8HP70. I would certainly drop the transmission filter and check the pan for metal then change mechatronic seals (I assume you have the nth america market ZF6HP28X?). Don't let the torque converter clutch wear out, if you keep the car after checking the pan for metal, I would be getting the torque converter overhauled. I like to minimise nasty surprises in X5 Beemers I do not know the history of.
absolutely! I've already told myself if the 6hp tskes a dirt nap, I'll be swapping in an 8hp. I wonder if it would be easier to remove at temp too, I do know that soaking or for multiple weeks with Kroil helped immensely.
Definately replace trans oil pan with integrated filter, oil and mechatronic sleeves. Use original ZF pan and ZF lifeguard 6 oil ONLY! @@tony.nextlevelrides
I have took m57 engines apart so many times, the injectors are never any problem to remove. However you should of removed them all and had them reconditioned.
Watching from the USA,, own an E70 gas 6 cylinder n/a at 186k miles or 297k kms...my terminal moment was a limp mode triggered by a faulty bridge adapter....did the job myself, saved the car (shop said new trans)
I’m really glad I came across your channel. Been thinking about getting either a 535d or x5d for a while now. I just have better luck with diesels. Subscribed! Don’t hate I’m in Edmonton haha
haha, I won't hold living in Edmonton against you lol the 535d has the N57 with timing chain issues, the 09-13 x5d has the M57. the only other vehicle we got with the M57 is the 335d. hope this helps!
@2nsane2005 seems to be both on the N57 and yes it's between engine and transmission. if you get extended warranty or if it's been chsnged, you should be ok just keep oil change intervals half of BMW recommended. if it wasn't for this scare, I would own a 535d right now. it's so wicked.
I replaced the flappers at 170k and it was full of soot on our 4 cylinder N47. If you want to source a new intake manifold, check out Darkside Developments in the UK. Adding an oil catch can or adding meth injection is the best way to avoid soot building up again. Meth injection adds power because it cools the intake temperature and adds fuel to the mixture.
meth on a daily driver loool, a new intake manifold can be found at the nearest BMW dealer. Flaps should just be deleted. Pointless company promotion, pathetic.
@@hexagonosaurus5848 yes there is nothing wrong with adding water meth. The kit is $500, works really well on a diesel engine and snow performance kit allows for better fuel economy by adding small amounts of meth plus extra under load.
@@hexagonosaurus5848 flaps shouldn't be deleted. They allow for better low end power, fuel economy and emissions. The swirl effect allows for better fuel air mixture at low ending speeds. Deleting it doesn't give you any benefit. The new revision is better than the factory for the swirl flaps. Those flaps break because they have a hard time shutting against soot building up in the intake. A new intake manifold is the only way to fix this on the M57 engine. Darkside sells them for $200. You can source them locally but the cost is much higher
The reason you have troubles with number six is possibly because of your failed cowls. When they fail, they leak and the water gets down into five and six injectors. So make sure you buy some replacement cowl pieces or else you'll be back at it again soon. These don't see much carbon in the intake. Also delete and tune if you can.
M57 engine will never die. Arguably the most robust bmw engine ever. If it wasn't for the plastic timing chain guiderails there would be no contest between it and the m50 for durability.
I know this is an older video but Vaseline is considered bad for O-rings because it is a petroleum product that can break down the rubber material of the O-ring. Really should start using a silicone based oring lube
Great job ! What was your secret sauce to clean the intake manifold? What coding tool did you use? I walnut blasted a 2011 335d with 175k miles. I am currently shopping for an X5. Love the torque of the m57!
We used Protools with an MHD adapter to code the injector and reset the adaptations (dial-in, adaption wheel thing?) and to monitor cylinder fueling / roughness. As for the special sauce to clean the intake manifold, we initially tried Dawn dish soap and moved onto the special stuff that you can purchase from a pump at the petrol station nearest you. ;)
When a shop doesn't want to touch something that person will just throw out an overwhelming quote to get you to leave. It doesn't mean that person is stupid. I believe the shop knew and for what ever reason just did not want to touch it.
I'm currently driving a b58 F20 m140. Looking at getting a more teenage family friendly car and everyone is telling me to stay away from the M57 due to timing chains/swirl plates. But I think I'm gonna have a blast!
lmao, they must be talking about the N57 and not the M57. the later "N" variant was plagued with issues and shouldn't be confused with the reliability of the M57! swirl flap issues are on European models, not in North America. even then, the mod is so unbelievably easy to complete.
Great job, I am on the fence about buying 2015 BMW X3 x28d. Do you have any thoughts or comments? I reside in the southern part of the us and it has 175,000 miles on it. My concern about parts and repair. I do not know any mechanics that work on diesel engines
the only thing I'd be concerned with is the timing chain, they seem to be common on those engines. perhaps ask if it's been changed / updated already. if so, would be a good vehicle!
@@tony.nextlevelrides I ask because I’m at a decision point on my 2011 X5 35d where it needs that done and it’s at 183k miles, and the question is: is it worth it? I worry that after this expensive job the timing chain will go. Already addressed this same exact problem with injector 6 and am replacing the engine shield before the rainy season starts.
Plastic Bulk head/firewall will leak water into the injector wells 4 5 and 6, and cause them to seize and short out the injector and wires. Always replace them every 10 years or so

I WISH we got the 35d M Sport here. 🙁
Broooooo your so damn lucky, for the injector to come out that easy.
I'm STILL surprised it came out as easy as it did!
The newer m57 doesent drop the swirl flaps anymore. The updated design of m57tü2 only leak oil as you can see
yup, I did notice much better cold starts in -25c without the flsps. it's strange.
I wish you have filmed the throwing of the battery in as I've never seen that!
We covered it in the other video if you want to check it out. th-cam.com/video/TMCdOiq3g5U/w-d-xo.htmlsi=1XDKz7MCzOoLpBO4
great job. when u first start after injector change, you need to get out air on metal pipe. u were lucky bcs other 5 injector start firstly
Watching from the USA,, own an E70 gas 6 cylinder n/a at 186k miles or 297k kms...my terminal moment was a limp mode triggered by a faulty bridge adapter....did the job myself, saved the car (shop said new trans)
nicely done! it's extremely gratifying when you repair something yourself!
For future reference, crack the line on injector 1 anytime you open the fuel system. Once you get fuel tighten the nut and she fires right up 👍
Good tip for future wrenching, thanks! I'll keep that in mind!
I’m really glad I came across your channel. Been thinking about getting either a 535d or x5d for a while now. I just have better luck with diesels. Subscribed! Don’t hate I’m in Edmonton haha
haha, I won't hold living in Edmonton against you lol
the 535d has the N57 with timing chain issues, the 09-13 x5d has the M57. the only other vehicle we got with the M57 is the 335d.
hope this helps!
@ aww no that’s not what I wanted to hear. And I suppose the chains are on the back of the engine?! Is it the chains themselves or the tensioner.
@ for sure !
just found your channel, and sir just got to say bravo, entertaining and informative, keep up the great work.
thanks! will do!!
Dont have a diesel but watched the whole vid lol keep up the great content!!
Will do, thanks!!
me too
Absolutely awesome sick score
I replaced the flappers at 170k and it was full of soot on our 4 cylinder N47.
If you want to source a new intake manifold, check out Darkside Developments in the UK.
Adding an oil catch can or adding meth injection is the best way to avoid soot building up again. Meth injection adds power because it cools the intake temperature and adds fuel to the mixture.
meth on a daily driver loool, a new intake manifold can be found at the nearest BMW dealer. Flaps should just be deleted. Pointless company promotion, pathetic.
I thought about a catch can but can't find a definitive thread on how to hook one up on the 2011+ M57!
good tips though!
Thants amazing fix great job fellas 👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed it
Did you put the code of the new injector in the ecu?
yup, coded it and let it re-learn the cold start and idle.
The reason you have troubles with number six is possibly because of your failed cowls. When they fail, they leak and the water gets down into five and six injectors. So make sure you buy some replacement cowl pieces or else you'll be back at it again soon.
These don't see much carbon in the intake. Also delete and tune if you can.
already deleted and tuned! new cowl ready to go in as welll
Hello. Congratulations great job !!
Where can I buy the software to do this on my phone ? Please let me know
You can search for "protools" if you have an android device, in the Google store.
You will need a remap as you did the EGR delete. It will smoke now when you stomp on it. You did get engine fault in idrive 😉
so far, so good! it was mapped prior to eliminate the EGR.
M57 engine will never die. Arguably the most robust bmw engine ever. If it wasn't for the plastic timing chain guiderails there would be no contest between it and the m50 for durability.
absolutely!! love this motor so much.
good job! I noticed a croatian banner on the wall? Are you croatian?
Yes I am!
I know this is an older video but Vaseline is considered bad for O-rings because it is a petroleum product that can break down the rubber material of the O-ring. Really should start using a silicone based oring lube
good point, I'll look out for some!
Love this video!! Well done!!
Thanks dude!
What is that pro tools you are using? Where can i find it?
it's in the Google play store, the app is free but you will need to pay for certain licenses.
@tony.nextlevelrides thank you....
I believe the shop knew and for what ever reason just did not want to touch it.
sadly it wasn't just one but two shops. worst part is they confirmed the injectors were all good.
Spray it with some ether before you burn up the starter like I did my X535D
Good tip!! Thanks!!
Hi bud, does this Protool app for newer BMWs as well, if it does what version of Protool you have?
hmm, I only know of one protool app. I did connect it to my 2017 so it should work.
@@tony.nextlevelrides Oh I'm worse... I'm Australian.
After the death of our own car industry, car fans have trasitioned to german power.
hi , what app do you use on your phone to enter the injector codes?
we used Protools.
Hey boss, can you drop the link for the injectors?
here you go!
canadiandieselpro.com/product/bmw-335d-e90-x5-3-5d-re-manufactured-fuel-injector-e70-m57-option-2/
great video thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
At that many Kms, had the Valve Cover Gasket been replaced already?
not sure, I do know it's not leaking!!
@@emamousette the timing chain isn't a fail point, I wouldn't worry about that.
if the valve cover is leaking, it's not awful to change.
@@tony.nextlevelrides Thanks. That really helps me decide that it’s worth doing!
now I gotta check if mine has a dip stick
it should!
Who is croatian so you have football scarf in garage wall?
I am!
How much your x5 have kw?
it's probably not much, just a Stage 1 tune for now although I think the tune is just to remove the error codes. It might have 250kw
But originaly ? 173 or 210kw?
@zefke8967 I believe 210kw.
@@tony.nextlevelrides thank you boss ! I looking for e70 and intresting which engine is m57 with how much kw 🤣
@zefke8967 it's the one with the most rated power. that's how I know it lol. minus the triple turbo one.
Plastic Bulk head/firewall will leak water into the injector wells 4 5 and 6, and cause them to seize and short out the injector and wires. Always replace them every 10 years or so
great advice!
🎉😂🎉😂 If I was closer to you guys I'd have my bmw there with you guys working ⚒ 🎉😂😂Great content and the chime covering the swears 🤬 😂😂🎉🎉 I just added m3 style mirror covers they look bad ass but as bmw owners we listen to every thing 😂so with that being said I drove it it felt like 2hp extra 😂😂 but I now hear whistles 😂which I confirmed coming from the caps 🧢 the aerodynamic design helps create the wind to split over the caps I thought it was something else 😂😂😂
haha thanks! glad you're enjoying the videos!!
X5 e53
Judt lubricate the plastic pins with wd40 before removing them with the fork...they won't break down
great tip!
Shops don't diagnose anymore. I do all my own work for this reason
it's unfortunate but true, glad I learned to work on my own stuff like you did.
on a side note, you're profile name has to be the greatest thing since sliced bread!
Hrvatska 🥰
Rather say o my gosh.
wowaweewa!
Sub’d. fellow Canadian 🎉
appreciate it!!
Dipstick what is that ancient artifact??
right!? I was pretty surprised too!
Hrvatska😊
sigurno jesam!
It’s called BMW tax
sure is!
Hrvatska? Hahaha ajmooo
haha, sigurno jesam!
That local shop needs to be banned
sure does.
You don't need to prove nothing mate, they also know how to do it but all the garages will try to rip you off, all of them are asholes, well done mate anyway and this kind of cars go to 1 million km easier 😊
can't wait to put it through its paces and rack up the mileage!
@tony.nextlevelrides keep up with maintenance every year and no problem with that engine ☺️👍🏻
yeah these are very good engines
2:37 I see you watch @M539Restorations
sure do! 😅
I'm about to dive into a "broken" 2011 with only 135k miles. I'm curious what the symptoms were. Just blue smoke?
I paid about the same for mine and hope to be able to use it as a tow beast.
all we had for symptoms was it sounding like it had a big cam. no smoke, no blowby it anything.
@@tony.nextlevelrides Got it! The one I snagged has super low power... I am hoping it is a "simple" fuel supply issue (clogged filter, broken fuel feed line, or worst case HPFP). Less awesome would be clogged DPF or major CBU. We shall see.
@aaroncarpenter2999 yup! if it's factory right now good chance it just needs to be deleted!
