BUT then I realised I don't have to strip down the rear lens to get to the front ones...🤭😁 So I just followed the the frontal part of your video and HURRAH I was able to clean it. The only issue I found was I didn't have any tape to put back on the lens edges... I tried reusing what I'd removed but that just snagged and the camera wouldn't focus... so I just removed it. The gap tolerance between the focus cover and the lens body is so tight no other tape will do... BUT I'm happy with the result. If I get a problem with the lens loosening I will look on ebay, but for now happy days... THANK YOU!

(I was looking down at my lens for a second just before so I thought he was brushing all the camera screws on to the floor.) edit; just noticed I have the MACRO version (had just forgotten) so i've watched the wrong video for 24 minutes... great video so not even mad or even miffed. Sometimes you can find for sale on ebay or aliexpress. Other option would be buy a (cheap) non-working, same type of lens from ebay, swap the faulty parts and sell the lens lens as non-working. Most likely the front lens elements of the other lenses are not working with this lens. You have to use the part of the same lens.
My bayonet mounting ring got warped when it had a bit of a fall... I guess the tolerances are tight cause min is not coming apart this easy. The plastic part that holds the connections came out with a LOT of effort but the mount isn't budging. I got it in the freezer in a vacuum sealed bag. Hope that will shrink the parts enough where it will come out.
Hi, I have a Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 apo dg hsm os, when I try to take photo with it, autofocus doesn't work, I'm not sure if optical stabilizer works too, when I shake a bit I can here something inside that is moving. If I try to focus manually, the ring keeps rotating. Even if I try to shoot with af or mf, high or small aperture it shows "error 01". What do you think the problem is ? - Something is shaking in the lens: there is a lens element in the IS unit which can cause that, it is normal. - Rotating manual focus ring: The ring should move the focusing lens elements, you should see that the focus scale is moving in the focus window, and when the scale is at the very end, then the manual focus ring should move further freely. - Usually I get Error 01 if the aperture is not working. Check the aperture using the DOF button. - AF not working: is the motor tries to move the focus, but the focusing seems "sticky", or it doesn't work at all?
I tried to check things that you suggested. Autofocus actually doesn't work at all (it doesn't move automatically, but manually it works as it should). I checked also the dof button , but the aperture it's not working, I'm not sure if is anything wrong with motors or any cables. I have never ever disassembled the lens you have. If the fungus is between the first and the second lens element, then I would recommend to watch a few of my cleaning videow, because the procedure is quite the same, and might apply for your lens also.
A step by step video that takes the sigma lense apart specifically to replace the gears. Taking the entire lense apart is a lengthy process and too much info for me. Although it was a great video for someone wanting all of the info.

I have fungus problem on a Sigma 70 200 f2.8 II APO EX DG Macro HSM Pentax version of this lens and tryed to disassemble the front elements after to see your video... but under the rubber the lens it`s diferent, it have the front part of the barrel separated from the zoom ring and after taking out the same 3 bolts that you did, anything happends... Any idea how to take off the front element to clean the second that is the one to clean? I will really appreciate if you can help me with this. Thank you.
Hello, Do you maybe know if it is possible to remove only the front element of the earliest Sigma 70-200 F2.8 ? It does have a the front lens retaining ring with the 2 slots ( do not see this ring on the second version in your video). But once this ring is removed, the glass will not 'fall' out, it remains sitting very tight in the barrel.

I don't know exactly if that lens element can be separated. Sometimes the lens has lens elements which are connected together with molded plastic which can't be separated. You might use suction cup(s) to try to remove one of the lens element, if you can't then most likely the lens group can't be disassembled.
The Rear elements can be unscrewed, from the zoom body, then dismantled and cleaned, there is a narrow screw on ring at the opposite side from the camera, 3 removable lens elements and 2 spacers. I am trying to find the correct sequence and direction of these elements. Thanks

@@CSantosMusic I don't think that replacing the PCB would solve the problem, and maybe Sigma doesn't have PCBs anymore. One option would be to replace your camera which has AF microadjustment, the other option is to use LiveView to focus... depending on the camera, it uses contrast detect focusing, which is slower but does not need AF calibration.
I did not do that before. To do that look for screw collars (plastic sleeve on the screw) which are not symmetrical... you can use those to calibrate the lens.

Could you tell me if the focus motors are the same in the DG model and the Non DG model? Also is your video relative to the non DG model? Thank you
I haven't disassembled the non-DG model yet, so I don't know the answer to your question. I would advise you to disassemble your lens, and check it inside. Maybe the problem is caused by dirt, or misalignment inside the lens, and not a faulty HSM motor.
Thanks for helping me out! I just purchased a used 6D full frame Canon yesterday. I decided to try the not focusing sigma 70-200 lens on the 6D, it worked, focus is now working on the 6D but does not work on my crop sensor 70D. Hope this thread helps out others that are having focus issues on there crop sensor canon cameras using this sigma lens. May be this lens is just not designed for canon crop sensor cameras or I just got lucky. Thanks again!!!
Some old Sigma lenses can have compatibility issues (AF or aperture doesn't work properly) with newer Canon cameras. Seems that this is the case with your camera-lens combination.

I'm a Canon-guy, so I don't really familiar with Nikon equipment, but maybe the reason is, that your lens doesn't have autofocus motor in the lens, and the camera body moves the AF lens element with that AF pin, and the AF pin (phisical connection) in not present in the D5300 body?

The outer lens barrels basically are the same, there are differences in the focusing mechanism. I would start with cleaning the front lens and the other lens element underneath it which can be easily removed, see the part of this video when I removed the front of the lens. I don't know if isopropyl alcohol would remove or damage the coatings, I use simple lens cleaning fluid which worked for me so far.

If the screw is in plastic, you can try to heat the screw, so it will be much easier to undo it. (Assuming that the screwdriver still has some grip on the screw.) The other option is to cut a small vertical strip on the head of the screw, then you can use a flat head screwdriver to remove it. Another option is to drill the head of the screw. Of course this causes fine metal dust which can go into the lens, so use the latter two options in emergency.

Good morning, my Sigma 70 200 lens fell from a height of 60 centimeters, now when I move the lens I feel it moving all the time as if it were loose. What must have happened? I make a normal photo, but this noise is very messy.
The problem on it is the AF when I use the lens on manual it works well, but when I turn the AF on the lens my camera shows me something strange... The camara moves between one shoot and manual focus fastly without sense. I don't know what could be wrong with this! What do you think about?
If the lens does it in LiveView with newer Canon cameras, then it is a compatibility issue, which could be repaired with a firmware update. (However I don't think that Sigma can update the firmware on this lens, maybe they would replace the PCB if the lens would be supported by the service.) I would recommend to try the lens on an older Canon camera, to make sure that the problem is with the lens and not with the camera. If you're sure that the lens is faulty, then first I would clean the flex cable connectors (if the lens is the older version, then the flex cables are soldered, so they can't be cleaned). Also, I would test the AF/MF switch (test the conductivity with multimeter), if the AF/MF which is not soldered to the PCB, then try to disconnect it and then try the lens on the camera.
I had dirty lens glass so I decided to clean it since Sigma is expensive so i took it apart...that was easy...tnen after cleaning I put it back together which i thought was easy as well...but woow...now the focusing will not work . The lens was in perfect condition when it comes to functionality. So now it is not focusing.. the focusing motor moves one direction after I press shutter only like 1cm and then immediately back to the same position very quickly and it stops. I have no idea what to do next. ;o(
As I understand, the focusing mechanism is stuck st some point. The best would be to disassemble the lens, and when you're disassembling the focusing unit, check which part of it is causing the problem: remove one part, then twist the focus, and check if it still stuck. The other problem can be that the lens is assembled incorrectly. I solve only the problem of the lens, and if the motor is working, then I don't disassemble it. Anyway, I don't think that removing the motor is important if it is working. The motor can be removed very easily: remove the flex cable, then twist the top metal ring to release it, then remove the rings one by one.

Something has broken or misaligned inside the lens. Disassemble it, and check the inside of the lens what causing those noises.

If you're sure that the lens is faulty, then first I would clean the flex cable connectors (if the lens is the older version, then the flex cables are soldered, so they can't be cleaned). Also, I would test the AF/MF switch (test the conductivity with multimeter), if the AF/MF which is not soldered to the PCB, then try to disconnect it and then try the lens on the camera.

Sorry, currently I don't do repairs to customers due to lack of time.
I had dirty lens glass so I decided to clean it since Sigma is expensive so i took it apart...that was easy...tnen after cleaning I put it back together which i thought was easy as well...but woow...now the focusing will not work . The lens was in perfect condition when it comes to functionality. So now it is not focusing.. the focusing motor moves one direction after I press shutter only like 1cm and then immediately back to the same position very quickly and it stops. I have no idea what to do next. ;o(
As I understand, the focusing mechanism is stuck st some point. The best would be to disassemble the lens, and when you're disassembling the focusing unit, check which part of it is causing the problem: remove one part, then twist the focus, and check if it still stuck.
The other problem can be that the lens is assembled incorrectly. Check out my assembly video: th-cam.com/video/7-_ZGoKPmak/w-d-xo.html At ~10:55 after you put back that ring, check if the manual focusing is working perfectly.

eBay, aliexpress and google is a good start. Unfortunately, there aren't that many spare parts for Sigmas than Canons.
I solve only the problem of the lens, and if the motor is working, then I don't disassemble it.
Anyway, I don't think that removing the motor is important if it is working. The motor can be removed very easily: remove the flex cable, then twist the top metal ring to release it, then remove the rings one by one.
