  • Police in England have arrested a man on suspicion of manslaughter in the death of professional hockey player Adam Johnson.
The skate blade of an opposing player, Canadian Matt Petgrave, slashed Johnson's neck during an Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) game on Oct. 30.
Redmond Shannon reports on what police are saying about the arrest and how it's rare for police to lay criminal charges in sports incidents.

I do know the difference between manslaughter and murder as far as legal terms go, but what is a person who commits manslaughter? A manslaughterer? No, he’s a murderer; or perhaps for you nitpickers, I could have said “killer.” No matter - the dude killed somebody through a purposeful action, and he belongs in prison! And btw, the perp has a history of being one of the dirtiest players in that league - he was intentionally fouling another player, of this there’s little doubt, okay? Prison. Case closed.

I think he wanted to trip Johnson, but realized that either Johnson wasn’t cutting up ice as much as he expected or that his on path was to far up ice. This meant that instead of clipping Johnson leg on leg he would instead be straddling him and would essentially end up getting checked in the balls (which is what you deserve for tripping like where knee on knee is likely). Thus, he tried to lift his leg to step out Johnson’s way, but did so way too late. Since it was so late, he had to raise his leg extremely high and he ended up getting Johnson’s neck.
Overall, it was an extremely reckless play and I do think Petgrave was going for a very illegal (hockey wise) trip, the sort that usually ends in knee on knee contact and injury. I don’t think he was trying to kick Johnson, but it does look sort of close to that. The skate to the neck was not the result of an accident occurring during a normal, benign hockey play. The skate to the neck resulted from an accident during an illegal and malicious hockey play, though not nearly as malicious as an intentional kick would have been.
This is all just my uneducated opinion of course. After watching the play I can see why many are extremely upset with Petgrave. I’m surprised he got an ovation during the next home game. Although accidentally causing a death can be extremely traumatic, applauding the dude’s return still seems weird and tone deaf. I’m even more surprised after seeing how it occurred. I wonder if anyone in the audience watched the clip of the accident. I still think it would be tough to get a conviction.

McSorley's career as a player was shot...and the NHL wanted to try and play it down...thank god they didn't have any luck.
Petgrave needs to forfeit his earnings and go to jail...no coaching endgame like the POS McSorley wound up having if you kill a man on the ice.

It's clear to me his actions were unintentional and anyone suggesting otherwise is mistaken. Let's come together and not spread unwarranted hate to someone who needs [our] support." To those who are calling this man a ‘killer’ and a ‘thug’, I don’t blame you for thinking that, but you don’t understand the physics of the game. If you claim you do and still think he’s a killer, then you probably aren’t noticing some crucial details. The image in this video perfectly illustrates how Petgrave’s skate to neck contact was unintentional. As you can see in the circled image, Petgrave leaned to his left edges to line up Johnson for a hit. This creates a sudden change in momentum in the direction of Johnson. He attempts to slip past Johnson’s teammate, taking a slight hop to almost jump past him, but Johnson’s teammate makes contact with his upper body. This initially causes his feet to shoot out from under him, at which point he is not making contact with the ice. Because his feet are knocked out from under him, contact with his upper body causes him to rotate into the position that ended Johnson’s life. People keep saying it wasn’t a big enough hit to force him into that position, but they aren’t taking into account the amount of momentum that Petgrave generated before contact. If you’ve ever seen a clipping penalty, it’s similar physics, except in Petgrave’s case, the contact came to his upper body. If you don’t get how this could cause him to involuntarily move into such a precarious position, look up videos of clipping penalties and notice the ones where the receiving player attempts to hop out of danger before contact is made. Then imagine if the contact was made to the upper body and it should make sense. Don’t paint a man to be a killer based on your interpretation of physics that you don’t understand….

Just watched the video, it looked like he was watching the player as he kicked out and then as he spun round on the ice he was looking over at him, then he got up and walked away, all the time looking over to see what he'd done.
