Dick Cavett has been nominated for eleven Emmy awards (the most recent in 2012 for the HBO special, Mel Brooks and Dick Cavett Together Again), and won three. Spanning five decades, Dick Cavett’s television career has defined excellence in the interview format. He started at ABC in 1968, and also enjoyed success on PBS, USA, and CNBC.
His most recent television successes were the September 2014 PBS special, Dick Cavett’s Watergate, followed April 2015 by Dick Cavett’s Vietnam. He has appeared in movies, tv specials, tv commercials, and several Broadway plays. He starred in an off-Broadway production ofHellman v. McCarthy in 2014 and reprised the role at Theatre 40 in LA February 2015.
Cavett has published four books beginning with Cavett (1974) and Eye on Cavett (1983), co-authored with Christopher Porterfield. His two recent books -- Talk Show: Confrontations, Pointed Commentary, and Off-Screen Secrets (2010) and Brief Encounters: Conversations, Magic moments, and Assorted Hijinks(October 2014) are both collections of his online opinion column, written for The New York Times since 2007. Additionally, he has written for The New Yorker, TV Guide, Vanity Fair, and elsewhere.

@Michael Fedak An actual debate is judged on the content of what is being said, and not in interrupting other debaters or being loud. If you live under a rock and you watched the video, it's so easy to side with Lester because of his voice and conviction, plus you rarely hear the others speak. Is there any merit to his beliefs? Sure. Is his beliefs right? No. Is what he is saying bullshit? Those who know the actual facts are the only ones who can tell.
Lester Maddox is very similar to people who say "all lives matter", he actually says it during the full interview. To those people, saying "all lives matter" isn't racist because they see it as including "all lives". But, this very argument has been used time and time again to silence minority voices. Lester does it in the interview to Jim Brown. It has never been actually used to argue equality among all life. All lives only matter when black lives start to matter.
If winning a debate means silencing or disregarding all other voices, then yes he did win the debate. If we stick to an actual definition of a debate, there wasn't a debate here. Just a rant by one man named Lester Maddox.
@@michaelfedak2144 what’s a race hustler when they’re at home 😂 At the end of the day Dick made a clever or genuine mistake in repeating the question and substituting bigots for admirers but Lester simply saw the opportunity to focus on that so he could play the victim rather than answer the question. He wasn’t offended by it as he knew it was true. He clearly knew that if he followed his tac of suggesting he was not a racist he’d have to acknowledge there were white bigots in Georgia and that would have upset a huge population of his admirers...who were bigots 😂
I was a freshman in high school when we heard that Lester Maddox had walked off the Dick Cavett Show. I stayed up to watch it, and was thus sleep deprived the next day when I walked into World History. My teacher, Mr. Oshel, asked if anyone happened to see it, and the two of us spent the first half hour of class talking about it, while I quoted the best lines. Good old Dick Cavett. He got me out of most of what was surely a boring class lecture since Mr. Oshel was not a good teacher. I'm sure that everyone else in class was as bored with our discussion as I would have been with his lecture, but I remember it as great fun.

Yes the two Jimmy's don't stand up to Cavett and Carson. Their shows consist of dumbed down casual talk and unfunny skits. Whereas Carson mixed intelligent chat with sharp humour. And I'm not a jaded old dog I'm in my 30s. Also Conan is a standardbearer for Carson and Letterman.

Maddox found a way to evade answering the question by creating confusion. These people are the masters of tricknology. Nothing has changed. It’s how they stay ahead of their own game.
Understand that Maddox was walking a political tightrope in The South at the time. He wasn't really anti Black..He was a bit like Wallace in Alabama. He was out for the working class irrespective of race. He was a lot more principled and decent than the Republicans in The South now.

The funniest moment out of this whole interview was at 6:27 where you can see Truman Capote on the verge of a complete meltdown as he babbles to himself quietly next to Dick.

I think you might be reading too much into that. The way I saw it is that he was counting off the "minute" that Maddox had just given Cavett to respond. Capote could appear to be in another world sometimes, until you realized he was just on to something you weren't at all aware of.

Having been born and raised in Georgia, by parents who had a Lester Maddox for President sign in their front yard in the late 1960s/ early 1970s, I've consciously resisted becoming Lester Maddox most of my life.

Smart, quick witted, deft and charming, the guy could cut you to the bone before you even knew it was a fight.
I only discovered Dick Cavett here on TH-cam. From everything I’ve seen of him, he was a superb interviewer and very impressive man.

I loved watching Dick Cavett back then as a growing up and I love watching him now.
Never missed Dick Cavett's show. Always a no-nonsense, direct host. I attended high school with one of his cousins. You could tell they were related. Even had the same kind, calming manner.
Cavett knew exactly what he was doing when he phrased the question in that manner. It was no accident and he was called out on it.

Dick Cavett stayed so calm and grounded throughout this interview. He was so skilled.
It's funny because there are people that don't understand why and how he became a host/ interviewer
He stays calm and his phonetics are a bit more than monotone and that less volume than most of his guests.
I believe he more or less lets them control the conversation once the topic and subject are delivered.

I would have loved to have met and been friends with Dick Cavett. He always had such an even temper in the most hostile of circumstances and always came back in the most articulate response in every situation. His wit was unmatched.

Dick Cavett was (and still is) the best. Such a pleasure watching important topics run with a class and intelligence. Imagine that.. today's late shows as Corben, Fallon and other comedian crap who deliberately avoid important topics, because They don't have the courage, knowledge and skills to do this and really give something to audience.

Late night hosts of today don’t come close to what this man did on a nightly basis.
Frank Cramo yeah but he famously embarrassed himself when interviewing black guests. Incredibly awkward and cringe. Look up the infamous interviews with Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy. Notice how Maddox was stumped, and after Cavett "interpreted" the question, Maddox immediately attacked Cavett, and cowardly avoided Brown's question, acting like it was never asked and he was no longer sitting there next to him.
One of the most striking aspects of the interview is that Maddox actually expected people to believe that blacks and whites in Georgia in 1970 lived and worked on a level playing field - unbelievable.
Delusion makes you believe silly things.
@@purepit4ever1200 I'm not sure if it was ever a genuine assumption or just a pathetic lie by Maddox to excuse segregation, and to somehow make it sound civilised. After all, no sane person would say that Black people have full equality with whites today, never mind in 1970!

@@Arthur_Pint today black people have LEGAL equality; however, full social equality is impossible since will always be racist people and as long as those people exist complete social equality will always be impossible. As for equality of opportunity, I think that's mainly dependent on location and your family and social status, but race can sometimes have to do with not having equality of opportunity. Equality of outcome shouldn't exist for anybody because the outcome should mainly be dependent on the person.
In 1970, African-American 's in the South had no equality since 5 years prior they couldn't even eat in the same restaurant as a white person. And in the north, though it was closer to today, there where still issues pertaining to race. Glad that we've gotten as close to racial equality as we have, but socially there might be more to do.
@@joshuapittman4663 You make some very good points. Yes, the challenge now is for legal equality for black people to to translate to defacto equality in American society. Of course at the time of writing this comment, America is in the throws of a rigorous self-evaluation of Black equality in matters pertaining to policing, voting and other areas. That said, I would agree that overcoming those who hold racist attitudes (such the Maddoxs of this world) is still the greatest obstacle to full Black equality.

Bro its pretty much the same as whats going on now. Its scary how much we haven't learned as a people all this time. The governer is pretty much saying "ALL lives matter" and Jim Brown is saying "BLACK lives matter".
That substantive conversation gets sidetracked by the governors own emotions and the baiting of the host. Jim Brown and the governor would eventually realize they were saying the same thing if they had actually finished that conversation.
Same thing in principle as today. I support Trump because I can see his overall agenda which is the greater good of ALL of America, not any single parts of it. So does Jim Brown ironically, as he was in the White House with Kanye. But two things cause a problem in today's conversation:
1. the media that purposely misleads to keep people divided(same like this host dictated the audience's reaction in this video); and
2. Trumps own emotions at times, which is his greatest strength and weakness.

@@markwithers9468 Jim Brown is up there with the greatest of the greats. Big actor too. Like Jim Thorpe, he excelled in several other sports, basketball, baseball, lacrosse, etc. Capote wrote In Cold Blood which turned into a new genre of narrative non-fiction.
