I knew her story from day one. She is not shy nor hides a past. She , to me, embraces how far she came from. And yes, there is a such thing as using laughter as therapy. And healing. And moving forward by Gods grace.
Thank you for being transparent. I was in my feelings because she's not my type of comedy either. Now I have the language to do the work on myself and stop judging her.
Who did we learn this harsh and judgemental behavior from? Perhaps the same source that taught us to hate ourselves ,the source that judges us to this day in the harshest of ways as a justification for violence, displacement, and disenfranchisement.
We must do much better towards our people. All we have is each other.
Pat is so much deeper than people think. She was sooo young when life happened to her.
Nope. Laughing is coping but it is not healing. I have compasion but i will not accept Laughing at a 10 watching a man please himself.
❤❤❤❤❤ I am always thankful 4 the universe within Professor Hunter’s thoughts movements and advancements in Our humanity!! Thank U for lifting up All that is Us 🤎🤍🩶🖤Ashé
Yes. Talk and laugh about what you've been through!!! Been through the same thing! I tell my stories and laugh! Shes ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!!! You overcome it! Don't let it overcome you!
Much respect Karen. I appreciate your honesty. I judged and shunned Miss. Pat. Then I imagined myself in her shoes and backstory.
I've learnt in life that. How can I be offended at others pitfalls when you clam to be human in this world. Life is hard enough, compassion is where growth lives.
8:48 This makes me have a little more empathy for my bio mom, who was 14 when she had me, and had 3 more babies before she turned 19. I clealry remember her being strung out at the age of 5. Finding paraphernalia for her "activities" lying around. We were fortunately/unfortunately taken away and put in foster care right before I was supposed to start kindergarten and I didn’t see them again until I was 28, and she was still doing the same thing. Hasn't changed. But as I've gotten older, I forgave her because I dont know what happened to her at such a young age, and she wasn't protected. 😢
Thank you for sharing your story. I sincerely hope that your mother finds healing from her addiction. May you also find healing in your life.
@@ChocoBeauty8 thank you
WOW, I didn't know about her story and it just made me sad!!😢 I'm happy she's able to deal with her trauma. I wonder if she has a therapist.
Life lesson learned today; so thankful that I'm not too old to be wrong 🙏🏽
I like Ms. Pat after I read her book and just wow! She's funny to me. Great conversation Karen
Didn't know her story, but very sad that she was failed by so many. Her comedy is not my taste, but after hearing her story I kind of understand why she is the way she is. I watch a channel on YT called Soft White Underbelly that allows people from all types of backgrounds to tell their stories. Their stories eye opening & heartbreaking and it has helped me to understand and have a level of compassion for all kinds of people. Very interesting topic.
"...wounded but real to the core"...bullseye❤️🔥💐
I love, love, love your tribe of folks you bring in to discuss varying topics.
I love miss pat 4 yrs now. Didn't get to see to many episodes of her show. Liked what I saw. Raw Been a fan. Real life!!!!
I got stories.
Redemption found.
"I've created a space where it's not about my comfort but their truth." Prioritizing honesty over expediency: will do!
I would recommend reading her book, Rabbit before watching the show. It’s not for the faint hearted.
Vulnerability and compassionate presence!... This was a Masterclass level clip! I hope it gets 100,000 views... bought their book and went to the signing last year... Soul food!
I enjoy cussin' comedians that are funny. The truth is painful but to put things in perspective makes her endearing.
I know ppl who r ruff around the edges like Ms. Pat. Once u get 2 know them, they have the biggest hearts. We all come from different backgrounds, so y judge when u have nvr walked n their shoes & ur only looking at the surface? Ppl are complex & like Dr. West says "We're all cracked vessels" in some way or form.
Hope Ms. Pat finds/found her Peace.
Ms. Pat's book is a really good relatable read. (Rabbit)
Miss Pat is a guilty pleasure for me only because she reminds me of family reunions where the family comedians always hold court after dinner, one-upping each other telling hilarious stories. Their language wasn't nearly as raw as Miss Pat's (because there were kids around) but they told the same kind of stories every year and it was fun to listen in and laugh. There's a lot of learning when you listen closely to life stories. Miss Pat's a lot like Rudy Ray Moore in that they demonstrate that wisdom and wretchedness often hold close company.
That's also my experience with my family. My father was born in 1917 so all his siblings during periods of bereavement would sit around and joke and tell life stories. Unfortunately I was too young to remember the stories, but it made me be comfortable with death settings in some way because of their attitude.
Thank you for this session, for I, too, was convicted, Ms. Karen. I was blind but now I see.
Amen 🙏
Yo!!!! maaaaaan that hit home what you said Ms Hunter , regarding being tore up when my mom was late, i can remember looking out the window thinking "Why is she not home yet!!!" and when she came home the relief was sooooooooo great ..... we talking late 70s no cell phone only her work phone and of course because her job has closed no one is answering so the panic is at level 10!!! lol
T.S. Madison has some raw life telling stories and she has been on quite a journey as a trans woman
Yes but at least it was by choice.
As well as Flame Monroe…
@@Harleywayne Yes Flame too. I love TS and Flame
Wow !!! Miss Robin is so insightful
Dr. Robin.
@@KarenHunterShow yes!! Sorry I couldn't figure out a way to put Dr Miss respect on her name LOL
@@KarenHunterShow Ms Dr Robin is brilliant .. this segment was so profound and thought provoking and introspective ... about people that tell their story with no filter because I'm definitely one of those
Lunelle had a similar situation that she committed a crime and she did some time. She’s very funny and very wise. She worked in a bank and stole some money and got caught and had to do the time.
This is why I like Ms. Pat! So real. Many people don’t understand her or why her show is the way that it is. It’s actually the reality for some folks and it covers more than trauma. Her story is like many other people. They just don’t have the platform to tell theirs.
Powerful episode. I’ve never heard of Ms. Pat and won’t seek her out, but I appreciate Dr. Smith’s language and compassion. I need a therapist like her. Seriously. You never know what people are living through and how their story change your perspective.
Ms. Pat makes me cringe. I tried to watch her show and couldn't finish the first episode.
Tyler Perry movies make me cringe. I watch them as a black man's perspective that is different then mine. I enjoy seeing things that have a different take on a situation. Give her another try after hearing this conversation.
What's ironic is that I have a brother who is a minister and he said he couldn't stomach the show but at the same time he can watch an action movie and can listen to the f bomb and all the m.f, and every other words and find nothing wrong with it. And I find that quite sad.
@@morrismims5327 I'm with your brother!! I love action. With Ms. Pat, I think it's the use of the N word for me!!
@TheLoveEvangelist I love TP and I'll try to give her another chance!
This was simply Amazing and there is also a lot to unpack here.
I too feel convicted. I will take this new understanding into my silent retreat. Kudos to Prof Hunter for the willingness to see her need for growth. 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
You got to Remember Richard Pryor on He talked about his Family.
Monique does this same raw comedy storytelling.
*She☝🏽really does--* 🎭
And she isn't funny either.
@@Duane-tl2zc no she is not
I love Dr. Robin! Yes Please Stop Judging
This was stellar!! I wish some of this compassion had been extended to the creatives involved with the Good Times series but here we be. #KeepGrowing

Um, I have to admit this...I have no clue who Ms. Pat is. I've never heard of her until now.
It's not comedy, it's trauma and sadness.
Which can be comedy she turned her lemon into lemonade
@@oladeebiazazi4538yes! I laugh about the same story! I'd rather laugh then sit all my life moping and finding myself into deep dark depression!!!! Which is the devil! NO MORE!
Always remember that when you point a finger at someone, remember that the rest of the fingers are pointing back at you.
Wisdom to understand the other persons story. As I am growing and learning, I realize that one persons experiences helped to shape them and therefore how they behave. Brings to mind to always ask the question what happened to you?
I love and appreciate this conversation. We need more of this 💪🏾
Professor the environment that Ms. Pat grew up is a reflection of what you heard. The Westside (Old Fourth Ward) was dangerous until gentrification.
One thing I can’t come to understand or agree with in anyway and that’s she feels laughing at the trauma she went thru is healing to her. I heard her say this a few times and I can’t rationalize with that, but I won’t say she is wrong for believing that
*"THERE BUT FOR THE GRACE OF GOD GO I"...were words injected into me at a very early age, like a necessary vaccine! I learned compassion, empathy and grace when many overly criticized and horrifically judged. I AM forever blessed to have been raised and reared by an optimal LOVING💞 VILLAGE.....therefore I extend **#MsPat** 💞LOVE💞, ✨LIGHT✨, GRACE and may her BAGS continue to💰 💰💰 GROW **#SUBSTANTIALLY**!!!*
Had never heard of her until today.
There is a podcast called Risk. It tells these same kind of stories. Risk has these raw storytellers.
❤️❤️❤️this 💯
Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled. - Titus 2:3-5
SHE SHOULD NEVER TELL ANYONE ABOUT HER PAST, THEY WILL BRING IT BACK UP IN HER FACE AND BEHIND HER BACK .
wrong.
Karen, you should read her book Rabbit! It is the story we are always told not to tell. I'm grateful for her
It is s good book. Sad, but well told.
It is a good autobiography. Sad, but well told.
I don't care for this show. I don't like it😮😮 But I see . . . I love that she is in this world to teach us. She is who she is.
No, this trauma is not funny… I don’t care for her comedy or the show, but I see why the “acting” is so real, because they’re acting out their trauma (Ms. Pat & Tammy Romane). Our community needs so much therapy… I include Tiffany Haddish too…
7:11 Black Americans did something similar with the use of the N word.
Even though I don't watch Ms. Pat show I do like her comedy. I also admire the way she has not only overcome but owned all that's been done to her. I don't see her as anything bad for the culture cause unlike others she's not glorifying none of this. She is just real and raw and I understand why people can't handle that. But think about it. If life never sugar coated nothing for u how in the hell could u expect that person to sugar coat their truth for somebody else. As far as being distasteful and what not I don't agree with that. She gives it to u straight no chaser. And sometimes that's all u need. We don't need to always clean shit up cause this world at its core ain't clean. So let's keep it real. And by keeping it real this may even turn others away from going down that dark grim path she was thrown into.
All of this.
I'm familiar with Ms Pat. Her humor is not my taste but I do understand why she expresses and continues to tell her story in that manor. I hope that she is in counseling. The trauma is so deep. What I don't understand is when someone, specifically Karen Hunter, has a revelation, the words are "we" instead of "I". "when I". Others may feel as you do but when you get "convicted" then it starts with you. We will all come to our conviction in our own time if we would have judged Ms Pat. I support you in your continued growth and the growth of us all.
My issues its not her telling her story but empathy to the people who are still in it any do not see it as a joke. Plus drugs mesup our comminuty which directly caused some the children to be harmed. But i guess this her story her redemation. It nice to see her win and she has some funny moments. ✌🙏🧘
Thats what gappens when you allow your oppressor to tell you what is acceptable, so they dont have to deal with there wrongs!!!
The sad thing is that in a lot of black families this story is normal.
Not just black families.
It always amazes me how we come up with excuses for women but never for men. If a man said he was selling crack at his kids school and having the kid watch him from the window he would be called the lowest dad ever... Wow 🙏🏾
You dont think people are saying this about her? Cmon, this isn't a contest.
I get what some of y’all saying but she is funny if give her a chance she’s really a good comedian
I've watched several Ms. Pat interviews on the Joe Rogan Experience where she's expounded on her life story in a way that makes plain her style of comedy. I often wonder if such rawness is necessary for healing, especially since the trauma Ms. Pat experienced is gut-wrenching. How else can it be healed?
💙
I can have compassion for Ms. Pat’s situation. However, what I will never get on board with is her serving up this vile behavior as a weekly show for the masses - keep it in the comedy clubs. This does affect our community period. Media is powerful, and those images affect how we continue to be treated and seen throughout the world. Look how the rap culture has totally captivated our young people to their detriment.
Raven ain't nothing but the devil and i heard ms Pat's name before but that's all i know about her.
the devil? the whole devil?
@KarenHunter I’m a Nubian and listener since day one. PLEASE hear me when I say, now a In Class In Car on THIS has to happen. Ms. Pat is the matriarch of the Africans in the United States of America (AAUSA). We might want to hear it but there AAUSA like Ms. Pat than W.E.B. Or Marcus Garvey. They deserve to feel the benefits of what “We’re” doing in Nubia. They are the same ones who grasp at Kendrick Lamar’s “they not like Us.” They cant afford Knubia, let alone chose to spend their spare time out of life “. And not feel welcomed or invited to search for, out of their algorithms, play, sit through and be engaged in conversations happening and then choose to be apart of community. But if not a majority they are a strong block in reverend Dr. Barber’s Poor People’s Campaign as well. Hate to say this too, that’s where the youth is. If not by demographic, certainly by mentality and emotional maturity. Just a thought Prof.
👍👍
Laughing about being exposed to childhood prostitution.. laugh at my pain.
The least of us. Jesus knew what He was talking about. Yet many follow Paul as if the apostle’s word supersedes The Word; The Alpha And Omega; The Beginning And The End.
Wow!!! this woman said the life she was given. Well all the Pookies in jail here's your get out of jail free card. Good luck slanging in front of an elementary school . Damn Karen you need viewers that bad.
what? do you listen to my actual radio show? I don't need viewers at all. this here ain't my business.
Wow, there’s so many ppl out there that see themselves in Ms. Pat. Idky if u knew her story why would u judge her?
Interesting that some of the same folk who rah rah against code switching find this offensive. For the record , I embrace code switching. I learned it from my Mama. My mother, "you must think you talking to one of your little friends. Check your tone, check your language."
Stop judging because people sin different than you!!.
sure. isn't that what we said?
Ugh, Ms Pat is so cringe.
not funny...
Not my kind of comedy either.
Kuntry woman lusting over Rick flair. There's A reason why she's not my kind of comedy.
No they both suck
