  • Spearfishing the Southern Maori Wrasse / Maori Wrasse / Butchers Prick is an easy undesirable fish to target. Prolific around Sydney and NSW you will commonly find these guys at the edges of reef, particuarly weedy sandy edges. They are often one of the first fish to come in for berley.
    I spearfishing in Sydney and the surrounding areas of Australia. The whole purpose of the Undesirables Series is to try and tempt people into eating different fish and break away from the traditional attitude that there's only 5-6 good eating fish in Australia. If we all ate a more varied selection of fish from the ocean there wouldn't be massive pressures on particular stocks. So eating a greater variety of fish will make our spearfishing more sustainable.
    As a side mission to spearfishing the undesirables im going to taste each species of wrasse to determine which is the yummiest of the lot.

    All fish were of legal size and were speared for consumption, I have a NSW Fishing Licence and abide by catch size limits, daily takes and no fish zones. Over the past 5 years now I have made the commitment to no longer buy fish, so I only eat the fish i catch. Spearfishing is the most sustainable form of fishing on the planet, it is also the most environmentally friendly form of fishing.

    I catch a heap of these down Wollongong NSW . lightly seasoned on a geroge foreman grill are amazing. Sure they have a weird rib cage that you have to pick the meat off, but it is delicious.

    surely you're going to try the male crimsonband wrasse at some point. I tried one a few years back and i'm not sure if it was a bad fish or if it genuinely tasted like soap.

    • @WetMammal
      @WetMammal  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely it is, yeah strange ive only experienced this soapy taste with wrasse species i wonder what causes it

    I've shot sheepshead wrasse here in Japan and they eat well. See something very similar to that wrasse quite a bit, might have to poke one next time.

    Blue throat wrasse are okay as sashimi but no good fried, they go mushy. They are good poached with garlic, ginger and soy and eaten with fresh bok choy on rice.

    • @WetMammal
      @WetMammal  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed on the sushi front, its going to be not so fun cooking it expecting mushy fish to eat haha, steamed sounds great

    I rate king wrasse the best by far, It's decent panko crumbed but really good in a curry as the softness of the flesh really soaks up the flavor and falls apart almost like slow cooked beef.

    there is a fish I always see here in NSW. I don't know what its called but it lives in the weeds and has an odd greenish colour. they're pretty easy to spear and grow pretty big. if anyone knows the name I would love to know. They also don't taste particularly good and I normally avoid them, if you know the fish I'm talking about, I would love an undesirables video about it!

    • @WetMammal
