Have been asked to make some more videos of the tank, so here it is :)
I rehomed the smaller cichlids and have bought a spotted Gar aswell as a Sturio Catfish (Platystomatichthys Sturio) which is a pimelodius / shovelnose cat type....
Im loving this spotted gar aswell though he took a while to acclimatise to the tank. he is eating on doromin pellets & bloodworm which is a relief, I'll try to get more footage of him now as hes a lot more active and growing fast!
One of my most favorate home setups ever. :)
That green plants reminded me when my dad used to take me to the river in Mexico I called em patito (little duck)... Nice fish tank
Great tank! That eel went into beast mode when he grabbed 2 worms at once lol
pictus cats are great... i love pimelodius cats... very active and great whiskers :)
Very nice fish and aquarium decoration. Thanks for sharing your videos:)
hey i just wanted to say... this is a masterpiece. the fish tank is beautiful and the fish look perfect. nice job man!
OMFG I LOVE YOUR TANK SET UP AND DAMN NICE ASS HECK FISHES!!!!
Wow! I have to say you have everyone of my dream fish in the same tank just when i was thinking u had everything but the alligator gar there it was! I love that surface plant but i would have chosen a darker substrate and a few peices of drift wood to give it a more "finished" look. You are obvoousely a master at your craft to get these fish to live together and i truly appreciate your talent!
Nice video. Great job and good quality. Your fish and tank are pretty sweet.
Awesome tank, awesome fish and awesome video. 5 Huge STARS
WELL DONE
thanks :)
Those are water hyacinth plants... theyre actually weeds in most countries so they grow well given good lighting conditions
Pretty ass fish nice tank set up
One of the best tanks out there keep up the great work :)
thanks dude... well i now have the right export settings for HD on my camera so i will make more videos more often... starting with the spotted gar eating!
He's a wild little beast... looks just like a prehistoric corc munching down ;)
dude great looking fish, loved it...
Wow good work, lovely fish and tank!
Damn that is one awesome Fire Eel
that eel is beautiful
thats one of my favorite tanks in youtube
its called a water hyacinth... the grow very fast and create nice shade and hiding places with the roots and leaves
they are Water Hyacinths... they are a weed in Africa and prolific if given lots of light.... they work well in a tank as the trailing roots give good shady areas for smaller fish to hide in.... you can usually find them in places that sell pond fish and equipment... its an outdoor pond plant but will work alright in a sub tropical/tropical tank
Just love Your Fire eel Have 1 myself a tiny bit smaller than your's tho by a tiny bit i mean alot my fav fish on par with green Terror , giant gourami
aaah diddnt see that before... glad you got yours eating! mine took 6 weeks, thought i was gonna lose him
Thanks for the help Twicksisted.
very very good tank
So sorry to hear that. My tire track eel went missing but had slithered up the waterfall and was kicking it in the filter resevoir. They are the same size @ 12 inches but I've had them since they were 3 -4 inches. About a year now. Special fish to me also. They have a black ghostie for tank mate also as well as a few corydoras and botias, watermelon pleco & common pleco
Wow! Absolutely love Oscars, but also the other fishes are amazing!
I'm in love with your tank
sweet setup
I enjoyed this video.
ok then i guess i will try some shrimp.
Thanks
and your tank looks great
dude! ur tank is a dream tank of the one i want sweet!
Nice tank a helpful tips is to start your eel out with baby cichlids so the don't fight very much.
awesome tank mate
its a luminaire type light with two 5ft T5 bulbs inside... one is a marine glow and the other a tropical bulb
nice set up
aeesome... id love one of those... a red aro or something... just dont have the tanksize for it yet
yes it will at first, but after a long time all of the tannins will eventually leech out.
You can use activated carbon in your filters to strip out the tannins for clear looking water
Awsum dude , we got what they call alligator weeds here . They are a pian for a lake but look good in a tank. You cant kill em. Keep up the great vids dude hopfully I get some of my Oscars on here soon, they are in a 125gal.
well you need to keep trying till you find something he likes... mine diddnt eat at first for 6 weeks! thought he was going to starve as he got very pale.... they go on a hunger strike for a while when they are stressed so give him lots of hiding place to feel secure and keep trying different foods till he eats.... they are big fans of earthworms & bloodworm... mine also loves live river shrimp (or brine shrimp)
:)
Thank you...
I recently put a lot of wood in the tank and its got a nice blackwater look,... also i added a lima shovelnose and a blue lobster.... will do another video soon in HD :)
nice tank!
I use two fluval FX5 filters... I do this so that I can clean one one month and the other is still operational fully, then swap round the next month.
The tank I clean with a siphon hose, I just suck up any debris and I use a pot scrubber to scour the glass and get off any lime scale
nice tank
cheers mate.....
yeah when cichlids mature they tend to be very antisocial... which is why the only cichlids im keeping now are my 2 oscars (the pair) and a blue acara.... the rest are catfish, spotted car, fire eel etc... i can only really have one large mature pair of cichlids in this size tank so i fill the rest with other interesting fish... perhaps in a 300G i wouldnt have issues ;)
@twicksisted your a good fish feeder & a gr8 tank for them to be ok. you keep them totally clean safe feeded well
thats a polypterus delhezi... hes quite a charachter... only took to digging in the sand a few months back
a fire eel will grow to around 30" in the tank so its fine to start with a 50g but id reccommend a 100g-150g rather to keep it for life... something like a 5x2x2 with a tight fitting lid would be perfect :)
Gorgeous Oscars!
thnks bro :)
that eel is mad :P
the gar wasnt out much when i shot that video but he's getting much more confident and eating loads now... ill do a feeding vid soon... looks like a little croc :D
aaah its an "Ocean Free"... came with the tank which is a "Boyu" made in chine... pretty solid though... double base and 12mm glass with sliders... the light is decent wouldbt use it for marine though... but its actually more than bright enough for fresh... infact ive thought about taking one of the T5 bulbs out so that the fish arent so exposed
@TheSapple hi that tank at the time of filming was 5x2x2ft... filtration was two Fluval FX5 canisters loaded with mech & bio ... loads of WC's and mixed live / pellet foods
@itsaysnotoeverything @itsaysnotoeverything they are called "Water Hyacinths", in some parts of the world they are considered a weed as they just keep growing fast!... make nice shelter for fish from the lighting and their trailing roots looks pretty cool (My girlfriend diddnt think so, so theyre gone... but i will get more this year i think!)
Water lettuce is another type of floating plant that looks similar, google them and check your local pond shop as they will likely have stock ;)
Beautiful tank!!! And amazing camera!!!
that will be a nice size... just make sure of you get large fish to get a few good filters... not just one... as they you are able to clean them at different times and still have maximum filtration and water parameters... also you can go on holiday and not worry about the fish being waterchanged ;)
thank you, i will do another one in the next few days :)
got some new fish too
thank you very much :)
beatiful video, I have 2 oscwar aswell and use to have a fireeel ;/
Nice eel bro
thank you, its a 150Gallon tank
you need to hold it above the sand... so you only suck up the crap on the bottom... you get the hang of it soon enough and any extra sand that does get sucked up is easy to put back in in the begginning ;)
I dont have them anymore... they were very nice to grow in the tank but my lightbar wasnt high enough and "bruised" the leaves a bit so the plants would decay a bit....I think with an open top tank and a higher light it wouldve been perfect
if that fails then just keep trying the same things you've already tried... most importantly make sure the eel feels safe and secure... give him lots of hiding space and dont bother him too much so that he settles down... if he feels safe he'll end the hunger strike ;)
yeah ill try and take some snaps soon... my oscars are a bit bashed at the moment as i put a load of wood in the tank and they seem to have freaked out and scratched themselves... itll heal but not nice for photos ;)
The gar is great... and so is the blue crayfish i got... hes a real wierd looking thing!
cheers mate :)
hehe... no those are "Water Hyacinth's"
they are considered a weed in some parts of the world, but for my tank its perfect as it gives some shade from the light to the gar and grows fast
hehe yeah i fell in love with him when i saw him at the lfs :)
eel: "yum! noodle!!"
yeah that what i thought aswell... diddnt look like a spotted had a wide head... he eventually started eating all of my fish so hes been rehomed now... I was hoping he was a spotted and i couldve kept him in a 300G... but unfortunately not
thanks dude :)
@josh122691 thats called a "Fire Eel"... looks like an eel, but is actually a fish... they grow about 3ft long and make great pets if you have the space ;)
i just use a hose and siphon water out... hold the siphon hose near the sand surface to suck off any debris... very easy to do ;)
I'd go for the fluval FX5 filters... they not that expensive if bought online and 2 of them in a 150g is perfect!
uyou can of course have smaller filters but the idea is that with 2, you can clean one and clean the other the next month... so you never have a loss of bacteria and ammonia spike
Cool tank thank u
Just wow
thanks, unfortunately that was spotted gar number one... he jumped out twice, second time i was too late to save him... I have another one now... and have glass sliding lids on ;)
super tank and combo the sturio get not tp big for a tank- very good
NICE ACHARA CATFISH
Thanks =)
oscars are in good shape.
thanks dude... its a sony SR12e camcorder
cheers :)
That gar unfortunately kept jumping and diddnt survive.... I did get another one and hes grown about twice that size now and is in fantastic shape ... see my new video for him
thank you :)
you have lovely oscars too
@Bowserboyproductions I bought mine at a local garden centre that had a pond section.. its summer here in the UK so there will definately be some around if youre this side of the world.
thanks :)
thanks =)
@mistaevanson cheers, i switched off the fluval FX5's for the video which is why the waters so still ;)
Got two in there so plenty of current normally
@RebelHiredGun that was my favourite fish ever!!! a sturio catfish... or zorrito catfish... thats the only one I ever saw in person and i bought it... unfortunately he got into a scrap with my Gar and was killed :(
Have been looking all over for another one as they are stunning... ! if you can get one they are very peaceful catfish and he only got killed by an agressive gar i think because of his shiny silver body and eyes made the gar go for it
happy fish :)
water hyacinths are native to central and south america.im sure africa has introduced hyacinth in its waterways though lol
I love your tank. What plants are those and is the up keep of the plants much trouble? I ask since I have had Oscers before and just can't keep plants in the soil, given the Oscers nature. Nice video.
@RjTropicalAquariums "Mountains- Sewn Two" is the artist, track title
white river sand... bought it in a large 20kg bag from my local fish shop
@Bowserboyproductions @Bowserboyproductions yeah its a great shop... great people who know their stuff, great tanks and excellent stock!... anyways the water lettuce and water hyacinth are considered a weed in some parts of the world so if you have a warm climate it could be illegal due to the possibility of it spreading into waterways locally... if you cant find either of those you may still be able to get hold of some Lemna "Duckweed"... or check google for various pond species :)
possibly... they grow around 12" and arent that active so i guess it would be alright.
The real hard work will be finding one as this is the only one ive ever seen in the trade :)
Great video
What kind of camera did you use to shoot the video?
i love how your bichirs burrow under the sand will my dino bichir do that if i get sand
nice! always wanted to keep some p-bass... and had an aro before (actually twice) but my oscars kept eating them... my O's dont like surface swimming fish... or actually i think they "like" them too much
