It's March of 2022 and this is the first time I've heard this. I thought I had heard every song Elton has ever sung and I come across this song after listening to Yellow River by the Christies and The Tremeloes and then I find Elton did it also, amazing!!
Try to get hold of an album-serie called "Chartbusters Rising". Elton is on those with a lot of covers. I have one of them, bought in 1970 (being 11) and Elton is on that one with a few songs. I only found that out much later.... 🤗 I cherish that album!
If Christie was meant to have a hit single, it was indeed Yellow River. Too good for the time frame in which it was released, and covered magnificently here by this aspiring session singer. Both versions essential.
So long, boy you can take my place I've got my papers, I've got my pay So pack my bags and I'll be on my way To Yellow River Put my gun down, the war is won Fill my glass high, the time has come I'm going back to the place that I love Yellow River Yellow River Yellow River is in my mind and in my eyes Yellow River Yellow River is in my blood, it's the place I love Got no time for explanations Got no time to lose Tomorrow night you'll find me sleeping underneath the moon At Yellow River Cannon fire lingers in my mind I'm so glad that I'm still alive And I've been gone for such a long time From Yellow River I remember the nights were cool I can still see the water pool And I remember the girl that I knew From Yellow River
The original was recorded by the Tremeloes, but they didn’t release it. It was then released by Christie with the same Tremeloes instrumentation, but Christie’s vocals.
Very interesting. I suppose everyone has to start somewhere. We also had those fake el-cheapo pop compilation albums in Australian in the late sixties/early seventies.
Technically perfect...though totally uninspired. Not that it would have been young Reggie Dwight's fault. If he had suggested taking a little time to build his own interpretation into the recording, then just imagine the exasperated reaction of the producer (who also would have been getting paid journeyman wages to grind out a string of musical sausages in the short time the studio was booked for). Let's face it: at a time in your career when you're scraping to make ends meet, this at least beats working as the slops collector in some boozy venue in South London three nights in the week.
Sorry, it is about a confederate soldier going back home, "yellow river" (starts in Alabama and runs into blackwater bay in Florida), after the war. From the horses mouth. I helped write the lost verses to it.

Written by Christie about the Civil War not Vietnam
Me, too 👍
If I were Elton I would not want is to be widely known either, its awful !
My first time knowing.. today!

Pretty faithful cover. The Bassline is particularly on spot.
Generally viewed as an anti war protest song, this tune was penned by a young man in the UK who had long been fascinated by our US Civil War.
is there anything this guy cant sing? ridiculous talent
Congratulations , my friend .... I had 13 in 1970 and since that year its one of my favorites songs!!!
Two Australian bands, one in Sydney and one in Melbourne, started their careers with hit covers of Yellow River.
Good version.....of a great song.....
Dead on...even before he showed genius, every chord and note were identical. probably one or two takes
So long, boy you can take my place
I've got my papers, I've got my pay
So pack my bags and I'll be on my way
To Yellow River
Put my gun down, the war is won
Fill my glass high, the time has come
I'm going back to the place that I love
Yellow River
Yellow River
Yellow River is in my mind and in my eyes
Yellow River
Yellow River is in my blood, it's the place I love
Got no time for explanations
Got no time to lose
Tomorrow night you'll find me sleeping underneath the moon
At Yellow River
Cannon fire lingers in my mind
I'm so glad that I'm still alive
And I've been gone for such a long time
From Yellow River
I remember the nights were cool
I can still see the water pool
And I remember the girl that I knew
From Yellow River
In the USSR the words of this song were changed to the story of a Swedish cartoon character Karlson
In Australia the record label was "Music For Pleasure" (MFP). Many hits were cloned by then unknowns and put onto cheap labels.
Better than the original.

Wow, beautiful! Thanks!
I'd no idea he did a version of this! There is a documentary on TH-cam about the history of this song and E J isn't mentioned.
He recorded it anonymously.
June 2022 👏👏👏❤️
Ez a dal mindenkinek jól áll, de a legjobb: Christie (Jeff) ! 😎💕🤗
Muito boa essa versão com EJ, amo demais
i love this song
Still better than Australian Idol or any of those blown up karaoke shows on tv
Música linda em qualquer versão .
It's a surprise to see THIS ONE..
Nota 10 com louvor, Elton John interpretando Yelow River
SOS UN GRANDE ELTON ...YELLOW RIVER ...POR SIEMPRE Y PARA SIEMPRE
I would say that it is "dangerously" similar to "Love Lies Bleeding" from their LP Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
Give a cover to Elton and you can guarantee it’s in safe hands ! 😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘

Autumn does the best version. This is dribble next to it
"Yellow River' was originally sung by singer....I.P. Daily.
I.P Nightly, and sometimes in the day as well
No, Christie. Jeff Christie wrote it.
Is yellow river the same as yellow snow?
*Elton John* doing covers? Never heard of it until just now. He _must_ have been desperate. Anyway, great job on *Yellow River.*
Before he got famous he did these budget records which were sold in Woolworth's.
