The artist who 'paints' with recycled plastic

  • The materials needed to make art can be expensive, too expensive for some.
But one artist in South Africa has found away to combine his artistic passion and his love of recycling. Mbongeni Buthelezi collects plastic bags from the streets around his Johannesburg studio and melts them to create a unique kind of art - he calls it "plastic fantastic".

The genius of this artist is like folks who went through the depression, they made toys, rugs, clothing, tools, even machinery, virtually anything you can think of, to repurpose unused & discarded materials to breathe new life into them & create practical solutions.
This man is the definition of a true artist.

He truly is impacting the world with his talent , his mindfulness of our waste , and his brilliant mind. So refreshing to see something made from nothing that is truly unique all and of its very own. And the detail of this artists work is just perfection at its finest.

Absolutely stunning work. But I am a pure recycle artist myself and I see brand new rols of plastic and the pre cuts from them in this movie. He does not use the plastics he pick out of the trash. Those jave all prints on it and would show up in his paintings. So No recycle artist.
    But indeed a great painter.
He should come clean about it in my eyes or go back to the real recycle ways.
I myself only work with donated or found waste materials. I dont buy anything exept glue and paint. Stay pure !!!
But still great skills this man has 😘

+tyangtyang tyang Only if it generates smoke. Plastic fumes are toxic to some degree, but melted plastic doesn't produce that without some kind of external push, like fire.

    • @seigeengine
      @seigeengine 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It depends on the plastic and the temperature. Some plastics don't release fumes at temperatures where they're workable, but many do release toxic fumes when heated up.

What about the toxic fumes that happen from melting plastic?? What safety precautions does he take to make sure no fumes are made or are inhaled?
I'm doing advanced diploma in Visual Arts and I'm for one of my bodies of work im doing Re-Use as my concept. Which is where i use plastics that are chucked out day to day that will end up in landfill. Such as wtappers, packaging, bottles, fruit packaging and so on.
At the start of this project i was using an ironcore poker to burn into the plastic but that created toxic fumes which really affected my throat. Even wearing a respirator, being outside and having a fan on it still happened.
So I'm trying to find ways it is safe to burn and or melt plastic without cauaing harm to myself, those arpund me and the environment. There are so many mixed messages online and i feel awareness isnt spread enough on the health concern when it comes to heating plastic. Which i am by no means accusing this artist for! Its directed to plastic DIYS where beacuse hold a lighter to pet plastic which creates toxic fumes.
I have been trying and trying to find definitive answers to my questions. such as "is it safe to use a heat gun on plastic? If yes, which ones?"
"Would using a pyrography tool on plastic count as burning plastic or melting it?"
    As some examples.
So I was wondering what guidelines does this artist follow to make sure he doesn't damage his health or others around him? Is it safe to use the heat gun on the plastic he is using? Therefore doesn't create plastic fumes?
If anyone could answer or any tips I would love to hear them 🥰
