  • Alaska’s Brooks Falls hosts one of the biggest populations of grizzly bears in the world.
As salmon make their way up the six-foot waterfalls, bears vie for the best fishing spots. And the females do whatever it takes to protect their young.

    ABOUT THIS FILM
    ____________________
    Grizzly bear characters
The grizzly bears at Brooks Falls are hugely popular with tourists and are also followed closely on Katmai's live bearcams. Some have nicknames, such as Walker, Chunk and 747. But I travelled to this spot to see the females.
    Journey
I stayed at Jacques Camp on the banks of Lake Iliamna, and travelled by float plane to Katmai National Park to watch the bears at Brooks Falls. The journey itself was quite an adventure. We flew to Naknek Lake, downstream of the falls and from there walked through the woods.
    Brooks Falls
These waterfalls represent the final challenge for salmon migrating from the Pacific Ocean to breed in the upper reaches of these rivers. Each spring, following a journey of at least a thousand miles, the salmon must leap the six-foot falls to make it to their spawning grounds in Brooks Lake beyond. Safety is less than a mile away, but first they must run the gauntlet, jumping out of the water, right into the path of some hungry grizzly bears.
    Grizzlies gather
The chance for an easy meal leads the bears to gather in huge numbers. The largest bears tend to take the best spots at the falls, but I find the way the females and cubs behave the most interesting.
    Female bears
Mother bears give birth between January and March, and by now their cubs are around six months old. I watched one female, known as 402, who is believed to be around 25 years old and to have had eight litters, more than any bear at Brooks River.
    Protecting cubs
Grizzly males are a threat to cubs and can sometimes kill to force a female into oestrus and ensure only their own genes are passed on. The females therefore spend much of their time guarding their young.
    Grazer
But one bear mum, Grazer, had no problem standing up to the other bears. Her cubs were two years old and nearing independence. Affectionately known as the 'Grazerettes', they oozed confidence as they followed their dominant mother to the best fishing spot on the falls.
    Bear tactics
Interestingly each 'mama bear' had its own, unique approach to parenting. Some, like a female nicknamed 402, were cautious, others were chancers and yet more were old hands and calmly confident.

It can be difficult to realize animal instinct is just that and not borne of malevolence. Films like this help raise awareness for all species, but particularly the misunderstood grizzly bear.

I have been to Brooks camp twice. I am a Former Fire Chief in that area and went once for fun and the other for a huge SAR for a hiker gone missing without a trace. The individual was a visiting foreigner and the entire park was searched by air and a great deal by foot where he was last known to be. It is believed that he was to eaten by a bear, but most likely he unintentional fallen into the river and drowned but without a body being found. It is still a mystery. I and the huge team felt for the family never knowning for sure how he had passed on by. Records of by flight and boat was searched and was never found. We sent personnel in rotation both paid and pain on call-volunteer. We also assisted the Park Service along with the state to find a missing plane that had crashed. Very costly to live, but such a naturist paradise! I truly miss the area.

Wow interesting story it’s a amazing place but the weather can make things challenging out there
Most people think it’s bears that are dangerous but flights in small float planes are the most risky part of any trip like that

Beautiful ~ I wasn't aware such viewing points existed , that/where bears will tolerate , and relax around , so many people . I watch little bears - badgers - here in the UK ; but , they're shy and hard as hell to observe , if they even smell you , they're off , or won't appear at all . If I lived near those falls , I'd be there , mesmerized , dawn till dusk .
Let's hope the salmon keep running.; and , there's always enough space left for the bears .

Good question it’s sometimes hard to way it up
But it’s quite simple at the end of the day wildlife, tourism saves wildlife and wild places because it buts a value on these incredible places protecting them from exploitation of natural resources
There was a huge mineral mine proposed in Bristol Bay area but it’s lobbying to use the area for tourism instead that saved the hole eco system

Are you required to carry a firearm? Guy I used to work with did these remote fishing trips in northern canada where they would fly them in on those pontoon planes. They wouldn't even let them go unless they carried a 44 mag or bigger handgun because of the people that have been killed by the bears.
