  • Hello. In this video Sensei Jumoke shows you how to do the jump in Enpi kata for karate.
    This can be the trickiest part of the kata, but by nnderstanding the movements, and breaking it down step-by-step, we can do the jump properly, maximizing how efficiently we can make the jump.
    Remember that the head is very important when jumping. Your head must turn first, which turns your body round too.
    When making the jump, we turn 180 degrees on one foot, as we begin to face forward again, we then lift both of our legs up to get height. The arms are used to help gain momentum.
    Tuck the knees up in front of you when making the jump. Land using the ball of the foot first, then the heel, and bend the knees to soften the landing.
    Let me know how you get on in the comments!

    when I was a lad, first learning this move, many, many years ago, I was told that a possible bunkai for the jump, is clearing a bo/job being swung at the feet. Due to this, we were taught to keep the head at the same height, and focus just lifting the feet out of the way by bringing the knees up. Also from the kiba-dachi/grabbing the opponents bo/Jo, use the pulling movememt on the Bo/Jo to add speed to the turn. I always though that this went against another principal of hips first, limbs follow, but it did work 👍🏽

      yeah i'm sure that would work too. would be good to give it a try in class. it definitely sounds harder to try and keep your head at the same height

      @@ZenShin great info I'm physically strong and with muscle not in the least bit graceful!
      This video helps a lot
      Whst I find difficult is that since the last move before the jump you are in back stance with the right leg leading and extended, I was trying to jump from this position almost impossible, but you're technique of lifting the knee up makes so much sense thank you again

    hi sensei ❤️, I'm trying to learn the wicked jump... but nothing, I try and try again, but I can't quite understand the rotation technique, and I can only raise one knee, while the other swings lower and lower. how can I do? the rotation happens, but I don't understand how to combine the jump (bringing the knees to the chest) with the rotation at the same time, and then landing in kokutsu dachi.

      Practice doing normal tuck jumps first. Then try tuck jumps with one leg. Next, tuck jump with one leg then land in back stance. Once you got that, put it all together, spin 180, then do a one legged tuck jump, and land is back stance.

    what is ur association, For JKA (if im not mistaken, pls correct me if i do), the gedan barai goes with a kokutsu dachi and the grab(i forgot the name), goes with a fudo dachi. I would assume ur ryuha to be skif.

      I tend to follow SKIF and Kanazawa when referencing kata.

    Never seen the jump come from kiba dachi, I’ve always been taught either zenkutsu dachi or fudo dachi

    • @ZenShin
      @ZenShin  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, you made me question everyone with that comment. I have been always taught Kiba Dachi. I've found people online doing both kiba and fudo dachi online. I guess it just comes downs to what your instructor/club/style prefers.
