20W 9xAA Cree LED torch from Lidl - test and teardown

  • Today I tested a powerful 20W zoomable Cree LED flashlight from Lidl supermarket. It has 4 modes and it runs on nine AA alkaline batteries. It has just a single big LED instead of multiple small LEDs. This allows for the zoom function. Let's see what's inside :).

    Thank you for your once again very detailed video. I also bought 2 of these flashlights before Christmas. For 15 euros per flashlight, this is a good flashlight and also good for modding. The Led is a Cree XHP 50.2 Led (18W), this is available as 6V / 3A and 12V / 1,5A type, max 2654 lm, max. 165 lm / W. I drilled 2 opposite holes into the aluminum head, in order to be able to open and screw the head better (for the Led driver).I removed the small plastic disk and cleaned the head of thermal grease and glued the Led board back with thermal glue for better heat transfer. As an alternative to NiMh AA batteries 3x Li-Ion 26500 cells would be conceivable (3x max 4.2V = 12.6V). It would be great if when once could reprogram the microprocessor to remove SOS and beacon and add a third very low brightness (moonlight mode).
    Thanks for your many interesting videos. You have a nice cat. Greetings from Germany. Wish you a healthy new year.

      A few people posted schematic in the comments. So fundamentally you could replace the mode control IC with your own microcontroller. Chances are whatever's on there is either OTP, or a custom or semi-custom IC that replaces a microcontroller used at prototyping/development stages and thus sharing the footprint with a microcontroller.

    Why an Earth all of these LED flaslights have tose blinking etc functions? I want flashlight with just ON/OFF switch and nothing else. Or at least a system where you can change the function separately and the switch is just ON/OFF switch.

      I have a bunch of these - the special modes are accessible on half press of the button, so you can turn it ON/OFF without cycling between the modes that nobody wants. www.aliexpress.com/item/LED-flashlight-Tactical-6000-Lumens-CREE-XM-L2-Zoomable-5-Modes-Black-aluminum-alloy-LED-Flashlights/32696375029.html

      I modded one of my flashlight just to remove those blinking and halfbright modes, it is much better with just a single mode. Having a potentiometer to regulate brightness separately would be even better.

    Very good presentation, the voltage/current/power/energy concepts explained so that even a 14 years old would understand them. The flashlight might be a good deal to reuse the 20W cree led, I think if bought separatelly it would cost about the same and here you also get the buck converter, lenses, batteries, etc.

    I do not know if could be helpful but that is a Cree LED, the 5mm one is the XHP50 .
    You can check it in their website, led components/products/XlampLeds/Arrays, look like thier XHP50.2 (more powerful, you can recognize from yellow bulb and the 4 chips), also you can check data sheet, that is pretty cool.
    I am waiting a torch with their last model of led XHP70.2 way more powerful, that works with 18650 battery!
    I have already treadown some flashlight with cree led and all work the same!
    Incredible few days ago I fixed up a power supply 24V but 4.5A model LP2022-24 and now you will looking the 10amps version.
    We have the same passion lol.
    I will wait with impatience the upload of the video about power supply!!! They are my favorite on this channel please keep doing!

    I do love that really powerful flashlights are now affordable for normal people. I'd be all over the 'affordable' lights if they only got rid of the strobe, SOS, and let you set the power level for one click on (maybe a switch to tell it to go low or high once I press the cap's power switch). EDIT: Would you be able to fit (3) 26xxx sized lithium batteries in it?

    • @DiodeGoneWild
      @DiodeGoneWild  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do love it to :) And I also hate the strobe and SOS. It's possible to bypass the mode chip, but you also lose the low power setting which I don't want to lose. Three 18650s or 26650s are unfortunately too long.

    lov what you do, Happy New Year......always found it confusing on LED power ratings stated on the packaging, is it equivalent to an XX watt light bulb or does it use XX Watts? ( latter being useless for spec'ing actual illumination ). luminous flux is better, but, ya never know if an integrating sphere was used...or a light meter ...or just quoting the LED mfg's datasheet! Cheers

    Do you still have your Christmas present? What does the clamp ammeter do when it sees AC? according to the data sheet the QX9920 should charge the inductor up to about 1.7 Amps and turn off (0.143 ohms 0.25 Volts). The input current should be 1.7 Amp pulses of shorter duration with higher input voltage (constant off time) (at 19:49). Ideally power in should equal power out (I assume the brightness does not change with input voltage). I'd also suspect the measurement at 4:45.

    • @Sam-ob4of
      @Sam-ob4of ปีที่แล้ว

      This works if the batteries are in parallel; the batteries are in series in the flashlight; so 1,5A from each battery at around 13,5-14,85 volts total; so the power is ~20,25-22,28W

    Shark fin, more like a cat fish :-D
    That looks like a dam good torch, how to get lithiums in there, more power ha ha :-D.
    And a switchmode to play with, sounds like you had a good xmas.
    Lidl and Aldi have some usefull stuff, but aldi has something for say a week then thats it!.
    I bought a digital micrometer for £8 (really cheap), they never had them again.

    • @DiodeGoneWild
      @DiodeGoneWild  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's definitely a good torch. It seems to contain xhp50 LED. Probably one of the lower efficiency bins, but still good. It would be bloody expensive to run in on Lithium AA's, but this would be very good for an emergency flashlight with a very long storage life. For frequent operation, Li-Ions would be the best, but 3x 18650 or 3x 26650 won't fit, they're too long. Maybe I could remove the switchmode power supply and put just a resistor in it and then run it on 2x 26650 in series. The SMPS would run on 2x Li-ion too, but at a low power. It could also run on 3x AA Li-ion and 6 dummy cells, or it could be rewired for 9x AA Li-ion (3S3P). Here we have no Aldi. Lidl also has those things for one week and then they have different things. Once I bought their 19W E27 LED and I was waiting a year before they had it again, to buy another :).

    • @zx8401ztv
      @zx8401ztv 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Speak of the devil, i was just looking through the power supply section of your site and up popped your notification, i thought he knows im here lol :).
      Ha ha it sounds like Lidl is pretty much the same company, just one week is Aldi's trick.
      I think it's done to make you go back every week, just in case you are in danger of missing something lol.
      The digital caliper (yes i did take it apart, just had to) would have cost 30 to 40 pounds elsewhere, same basic no-name.
      You could use a resistor for dropping voltage, a small wirewound perhaps?

    • @DiodeGoneWild
      @DiodeGoneWild  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that the LED is the lowest efficiency bin. If the data on the package are right, 1500 lm / 20W = 75 lm/W. This is why it's cheap :).

    • @Random_4400
      @Random_4400 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DiodeGoneWildthats an xhp50.2 quite a high-end chip from CREE from memory on the datasheet it can do like 2600-2700 lm at 20w so it definitely isn't a cheap chip, they've just underrated this flashlight by the looks of it.

    Under 1.5amp the voltage of the batteries is droping way under 14 volts, so the power is not close to 20wats

    hey diode, can you check if 18650 will fit & work in this body? It has this AAA adapter so I assume it could work with 18650 right away as in other chinese smaller ones for 3AAAs but just to be sure - this seems like quite good hardware actually.

      No, it's too short for three 18650s.

      DiodeGoneWild What about finding some decent Li-ion AA batteries and either modifying the battery holder for a 3S3P configuration. Or maybe just use 3 batteries and short out the rest?

    Isn't that 'mystery chip' just an atmel microcontroller, because of the 6 AVRISP pins probably for programming the chip in the middle of the board.

    I have a similar product from Aldi-UK which uses 4 X C cells. I wonder why this one uses AA?
