I have the fluted titanium native-5. Incredibly underrated knife imo.
Phenomenal ergonomics, great leaf shaped S35VN blade, buttery action, solid lock-up and a slim carry in pocket.
    Can't go wrong with that.

I am the opposite, I do not play with or fidget with my folders, I use them to work and cut . I like the solid feel of the back lock and I like the Spyderco Native Chief which I ordered in the sprint run in S90V and Carbon fiber . That will not be a fidget knife but a hard use work knife as it was designed to be .

I’m with all your sentiments on this knife. I love it and carry and use mine all the time, but I won’t be buying any more back locks any time soon. This native and the siren are the only two I own.

I’m glad to see so many people coming to the same conclusion on this one. It’s the backlock for those of us who don’t like backlocks haha

  • @holdernewtshesrearin5471

The one thing people overlook with the back lock is that all the forces applied to the blade are transferred to the lock bars relatively small pivot pin. Back locks engage the blade and lock up very solidly and it is a strong system overall. However, depending on the size of that lock bar pivot pin, it may or may not be stronger than a compression lock, liner/frame lock etc.

I get what you mean and you do have a point but does it really matter? Sometimes I feel like we get so carried away with lock strength. A lot of these test show that the blade fails before the lock.

@@nickallen8333 - well that's the real question, isn't it. Why do we need folding knives that strong?
I'm a firm believer that if it's an issue with any lock, you need a fixed blade.
But I do appreciate the security and confidence of a strong folder.

They need to make a Native 5 LW with compression lock, basically a smaller Shaman in LW.

I own one of these, and agree. Although it's not the most fidgety knife by any standard, it really is a great knife. It's smaller than I usually carry as a main knife, but it is an excellent back up, and it's classy looking. One I'm not worried about pulling out in front of people..it's non threatening. S90V is kind of hard not to like too, so that doesn't hurt. I own a bunch of Cold Steels, so I'm used to the back lock. I do kind of sort of fidget with them, but you're right. They'll never match the fidget factor of any of the other lock types. I have knives sitting around all over the place though, so a good fidgeter is always handy when I'm kicking back at home.

I enjoy using my native 5 lightweight. Great knife, but the back lock makes it less fun to mess around with when I'm relaxing.

Back locks make you work a little harder for them to be fidgetable. Please watch my video where I give a 2 week update on the syderco siren to see how a back lock can be fidget friendly

I have a few back locks and am like you in how I like to fidget. The ones I have are not laser beam slicers though. Might have to give this a look. I also don't have anything in S90V at the moment. Well shoot I guess I will put it on the list. Lol Its getting long.

Haha this one is worth making the list, it’s a seriously phenomenal knife, I’ll be carrying it as a secondary very frequently 🙌🏻

Have you tried a Steel Will Tasso? It uses an "Ant-Lock", which is a back lock and Axis lock style hybrid.

I haven’t tried one yet but I’ve been meaning to, hopefully soon 👍🏻

Hey I am new to your channel and knives too
What size hand do you have? I wear XL gloves but wanted this one or even the lil native but wasn’t sure if I could even get a good grip on them
    Thanks!

I agree that backlocks aren’t that fidgety. They do make a great backup knife. Thats why I use my Delica for. Also, how’s your hand?

    • @beardedgear
      @beardedgear  4 ปีที่แล้ว

It’s fine haha thanks for asking 👍🏻 a little super glue goes a long way 😂

People who compalin about the solid backpock not being a fidget knife use it as toys instead of a heavy duty utility tool. If you buy knives to fidget and play around buy a flimsy Bugout and axis lock for light work.

You can use your knife and play with it too, how are those mutually exclusive?

Out of all the Spydercos, I only like the Native 5. Back locks dont bother me, I love the gentleman carry aspect of it. I have the same fluted carbon fiber model, but put a DLC m4 blade on it. And you have to replace the pocket clip, cause the generic spyderco clip sucks!!

    • @beardedgear

These scales must look awesome with a DLC blade, well done!

There’s nothing wrong with a good back lock as you’re finding out yourself.

You really need to try a Cold Steel AD10 or Ultimate Hunter.

Yes agreed a 100% just don't like the back lock. Nothing against the knife it self. Just not my style. On point. Thanks
