Xandré and I set out to fish for Spotted grunters in the breede river using light tackle and surface lures. using topwater lures for grunters can be really challenging but this day they weren't shy to eat the topwater lures at all!
Tackle used:
Rod- Assassin Tempest MH
Reel- Shimano sustain 2500
Braid- JDB 8lb Ultra finesse
Hook snoot - 0.38mm maxima ultra green
Lures - Rapala skitter walk (olive) Rapala skitter , Z killer

Brilliant video as usual. Been trying without luck with a Skitter V for weeks now, can see Grunter and Garrick here in Durban harbour, but frustrating experience...until now. I took a keen interest in your retrieve, I have been working mine way too fast. Going to slow it down, gentle does it by the looks of it. Will let you know how it goes, thanks for the advice Xander! 👍

I'm reminded of an incident with my son and the first grunter
he hooked.
He was 10 at the time, and played it nicely to the side, but right at our feet, it threw the hook...my son turned to me and my mate, and said 'Dad, uncle Jason, can I say the f word?'
We could only chuckle and agree!

I am here in Auckland new Zealand surf casting with assassin evo gold very happy with it so far although we don't have as big fish in our surf compared to SA had some good acting with it. I also own amia casting iron candy if find it bit heavy for me to cast it all day long. Looking at getting my self assassin aurora 10 to 35g model. I wonder how light this rod would be.
I wish I could move and find a job so close to the ocean, I live for saltwater fishing, stuck in Pretoria :(

Thanks for this! Didn't really know you could catch them on lures. I live near Groot Brakrivier and often check the grunters tailing in the early evening. Def gonna try out some topwater lure action there 🤙

Hi xander regarding this video if tried to fish for grunter on top water lures a lot of times and still nothing even thought the z killer over there heads and slowly retrieved but I can’t seem to catch them could you give me any tips
They can be really full of nonsense don’t get despondent, try a dropping tide early morning and as the sunsets, low light conditions work well, it is important to pause your lure every now and then with gentle twitches every now and then

Its a added single hook on a piece of dacron or braid. It is that two little hooks I have at the back of my lure.
