I catch a TON of Northern Kingfish in the Northern Outer Banks when I venture down there every summer. They call them Sea Mullet there. That is a monster that you caught compared to the average 11 inchers I get in the surf every year. They are absolutely delicious. We like them oven fried (and being a diabetic, I use seasoned ground up pork rinds for a bit of crunch mixed with almond flour for the final breading and keto flour for the initial coat prior to the egg). Then a decent spray of canola oil on either side of the battered fish and into the oven. Saves the mess on the stovetop and a flip of them after a few minutes gets the golden brown on both sides.
Man - that black still water at your first stop - reminds me of backwater rivers in central Fl from my youth. That kingfish - looks like what we call whiting, usually catch them in the surf. I absolutely love 'em! Hope you enjoyed.
Super variety of fish. Way to end up with a red fish and not a red head. Those green rods are about signature for your vids and look great on video. Thanks again for what you do. ❤
Enjoy your videos, laid up right for awhile lost some fingers. I really enjoy fishing but now have to figure out how to bait and tie hooks again. Keep up making the great videos you put out, from the Northwest Coast.
That kingfish is awesome table fare, my girl prefers them over flounder when they're sizable. Also known as Sea mullet or Whiting in the Carolinas and other places.
I’ve fished Sebastian inlet regularly over the last 10 years, and there are a few Asian guys I see frequently. They exclusively target lookdowns. I’m not sure exactly how, but when I run into them they always have just lookdowns in their bucket. Oh and they love their Stella’s. They’ve got like $3k of gear with them.
Rich, I used to fish for moonfish (lookdowns) at Haulover docks under the lights. We used little eighth ounce pink jigs under the lights. I once caught one at 5+ lbs. The charter boat captains used them to troll for barracudas.
Outstanding video once again. Keep up the great content. Great showcase of the different types of fish and presentations to land them. Always entertaining and informative.
The ringer mullet run in a out of fresh an saltwater all day long..so it wouldn't hurt the mullet .I've lived here in Florida my whole life an never had any problems.
It happened to me this week, while fishing in the channels down south Miami. The fish refused both live and dead shrimp, but immediately got hooked up when I tossed them a Enrico Puglisi fly shrimp.
Great video as usual, love the catch and cook! Awesome PB on the redfish, that on was a puller. Your adventures out fishing is always the best, thanks for taking us along! How can I get one of those skillets?
Great content as always, you should take the fly rod up in that basin for those tarpon. I catch 10 to 1 with a fly rod vs a spinner when it comes to back water tarpon.
Rick, what are your thoughts on the reason for the 10-fold increased hookup rate on fly vs spinner? Obviously it’s the lure,I.e. the fly, but is the fly just more “natural” in appearance and movement to the tarpon?
@paulthecpa2717 I'm no expert by any means brother. My thoughts are tarpon for what ever reason, tend to eat small natural moving food. You would never expect a 150lb fish to go so out of its way to eat something that is only 1 to 1.5 inches long (i.e.) the worm flies that work so well in the keys. That I can't explain, but tarpon love small things to eat. Now don't get me wrong a big tarpon will take out a 12 inch mullet under a bridge at night. Tarpon are also big nocturnal feeders, doing most of their feeding at dusk to dawn and in between. I believe the flies work so well for tarpon because it seems like zero effort to grab and eat something so small for fish so big. Which is how we trick them to eat in the day time most of the time. Also flies have the ability to do something artificial can not. It can hang in the water column with ease, slow moving but very alive looking due to the hair and feathers they are tied with. A well tied fly can literally look alive simply sitting unmoved in the water. That is a few of the reason I believe flies work so well. Now as far as hookups to landing on flies, you don't need a big hook to hook a big tarpon. 150lbers are landed on #1 hooks now a days with ease. Technology has gotten better and laser sharpened hooks are needle point right out of the pack. Allowing the smaller diameter hook to have an even smaller point which can find it's way into the bony mouth of a tarpon much easier than the larger diameter shanks on a bigger hook. When fishing for juvi tarpon, 2 to 40lbs most of my flies are tied on #2 to #6 gamakatsu sl12s hooks. The SL12s is the only hook I tie on. I've landed 30 to 40lbers on a #6 gama with no issues. Best night i had out on the kayak was 8 tarpon landed to hand and jumped 4. The four jumped where due to my own mistakes. They ranged from 20 to 43lbs according to the LxG squared formula they use in the golden fly and other tarpon tournaments. All those fish where caught on two identical flies tied on a #6 sl12s. A small glass minnow style pattern I've tied out of ep needle fish fibers. I'm sorry this has ran on so long was not my intention. Hope this provides some sort of insight, but again I am no expert nor do I claim to be. I just love fly fishing for tarpon.
@paulthecpa2717 You're right, I never mess with paragraphs when posting comments. Only in work emails do I use proper tab and spacing and paragraph structure 🤣. You are incorrect about me being an expert though. I'm an amateur at best brother. I've landed 80 tarpon to hand, I've only been fly fishing for one year three and a half months. I just do a lot of research and listen to people who have been really successful at it. It's paid off for me greatly, and I couldn't begin to count the snook and redfish I've landed. And speckled trout on gurglers are some of the most fun fishing you can do, I recommend everyone try it sometime. Tight lines brother.
@@rickeeporter5952 80 tarpon to hand? I’ll gladly bow to your better knowledge and you qualify as an expert in my book man. 👍. Just ribbing you on the paragraph jab, but I think you knew that. I’ve jumped more tarpon than I’ve landed, all on buck tail jig. Biggest was just shy of 100 lbs, from the beach in central east coast Florida, think Sebastian inlet area.
Hey fishaholic met u at the ramp on previous Friday nice day of catches especially the big red shows this waterway can recover. Can you do a video showing impact of lake O water release which started last Saturday? I’m wondering how much and fast it will affect St Lucie river Keep it up, great job!
That’s a nice slam day for sure! I don’t think there are many redfish around that bridge, but Rich puts in the time and seems to find inshore cobia and offshore blue marlin so why not a lost redfish or two?
Just heard at the end of the vid -- I was asking what you were using for your main line and you told me about all the line set-ups. Just had to wait you out like you did that juvenile Goliath. BTW, I went to a FSW regulations conference on Goliaths and I mentioned that the commission didn't mind taking $350 for a Goliath permit -- at least NOW we know what the fish is worth to them. MONEY!
Question if you have the time, I’m trying to get on a good bite inshore during these colder days in Florida (palm Coast), but can’t seem to find much. What’re your ideas on this?
Getting lure off log-your method does normally work, but all those out there using this method be cautious as it is real easy to break a rod tip doing it!!
Awesome video as always, but one tiny critique. PLEASE, when cutting vegetables, do not hold them the way you do. You make your living fishing. Your fingers are kinda important. You do everything you can to avoid getting hooks through your skin, do the same with your knife….🤙
@@weatherherk1 ya, he is really skilled at filleting a fish. Wanna know why? So he gets the nicest filets possible and doesn’t waste anything. Know why he never cuts himself? Because he carefully places his hands and the knife where they need to be. Only makes sense to do that with other things. It’s just a reminder, not an order that he has to obey. Plus, I’m sure there’s lots of kids that watch his channel so showing them proper techniques is the responsible thing to do.
If right handed move your spinning reel handle on the left, easier if righty !!!!!! It's a spinning reel thing...........strong arm for rod and weak for reeling !!!! Try it.....................English people mostly do it wrong !!! LOL Drop reels are on the right, most are in holders anyways..................

Fishing until evening, lots of fish were released and the fish were also cooked 👍👍 47:36

That’s a massive whiting! Never heard it called a southern kingfish until today. You learn something new everyday.
That was a monster whiting (kingfish). Would love to get those that size up here in the Destin area.
Come to Tampa... They're everywhere 😂

Awesome, thank you again.

bigger hook to keep them on?????
