    Sounding like you are much more security minded these days. Good way to be in the Philippines. Hope you enjoy Duma. Heard a lot about it but have never been there. But don't think I will make it now, just bought a farm in Mindanao.

    Your pronunciation of Moalboal is spot on.
    $180.00 a month! Great deal.
    I was in Cebu City at an apartment. Ground floor, stifling heat. The weird thing was that on the second or third floor there was a breeze.

    Great video! Thanks for sharing this information! LIke the part where you said you don't need cable as you don't watch TV....YOU ARE SMART! and the part about making sure where the sun will be beating down? I made sure of that when I purchased a condo in Bangkok, Thailand.

    Great videos as always, very informative and very helpful for those intending to live in that country including myself. Heading there by the end of next year (Nov 2019) from Sydney.
    You might have done it, but would have been great to see the move to the new place and how you went about it and see the new place all furnished and done. Keep up the good work.

    I have already seen a few of the Life Beyond the sea videos
    that you show, I really like them a lot, very informative. I'm a
    widower of Irish-Norwegion ancestery that was married to a
    wonderful Filipina woman 31 years. I retired after 40 years of
    working two years ago, I am planning to move back to the
    Philippines in 4 years for good. I'll have my monthly retirement pension & my social security. I will be selling everything I own
    here in Arizona. I spent half of my life in Southern California.
    I had been to the Philippines 10 times on 3 Westpac deployments
    when I was in the Navy & was stationed at Subic Bay, that
    was the best duty I had in the Navy. So for me the Philippines
    is my second home, and it was the very first country outside
    The United States & Canada that I got to see & experience.
    Where I plan to move to in the Philippines is in the Bicol
    Region on the island of Masbate which is my first choice, my
    second choice is Sorsogon province, and Albay province is
    my third choice to live out my live there

    Nice place Henry, looks secure and lot of cupboard/wardrobe space. Our 4th Floor walk-up 1 Bedroom, in Caloocan (Metro Manila) is smaller in size - brand new building. The rent is 7500 for 4th floor- 500 more for each floor down. 4th gave us a nice view of Manila Bay.

    WOW- What a great place for $ 180.00 bucs per month, that would
    be $ 1400.00 to $ 1800.00 in California. I can tell by all the security
    it has ( barbed wire etc) that the last place you had broken into really
    made you think about your security-" I think that's good"--better to be
    safe than sorry, and relax a bit Henry.
    Looking forward to see some nice looking young Filipina beauties
    on your upcoming videos.Thanks again for another great video.
    From what I've read there's a university in Dumaguete, so there
    should be lots of them.

    I just wanted to let you know that I watched your recent video on "Making Filipino food in California". As a Filipino American aka Amerasians, I personally have never tried/made Lumpia with chicken...I liked the idea and will try it. I noticed that the vegetables seem raw? Also, the way you rolled them and used egg as a glue. Umm...I'm not sure who showed you that,but traditionally we use water. At least....that's the way I was taught by my mother and grandmother. But I just wanted to give you a thumbs up for at least attempting and actually making Lumpia.

    Henry - congrats on your new digs. Looks great. I'm impressed. It appears to be at least double the size of your previous apartments. Was that a conscious decision on your part or just the way it worked out? Also, in your prior video about heading to Dumaguete you mentioned packing everything in your backpack for the trip. How can you fit all you need to live on in just 1 backpack? I would need several suit cases plus a backpack. I know you are a minimalist but that takes it to a new level. Would like to hear your thoughts on that. Thanks for the continued great videos

      LifeBeyondTheSea - Philippines I'm thinking of going to Cebu and spending a bit more to have a temporary well equipped place that's safe to do research. Trying to put things together from California just led to me passing on the whole thing last year. Perhaps I'll pass the attitude test when I get there, and find a cozy, secure place for a round 500 us a month. A scooter to come. :} By the way, glad to see you're travels have paid off.

    Hi Henry, In this video, you mention you Cable was available in your area. The provider in Duma seems to be Sky and they have some pretty heavy duty plans (10MBPs to 55 MBPs www.mysky.com.ph/dumaguete/skybroadband/plans.php#plan2 I am wondering how much of the city and surrounding area has Cable and specifically Cable Internet available.

    • @Lifebeyondthesea
      @Lifebeyondthesea  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aprille Shepherd i'd say within a km of the city limits is good for cable. i decided to not go with them because (a) during my first 10 days i only got maybe 3 days connection and (b) they wanted a 1-year contract commitment. Instead I got a post-paid 6Gb/sec plan with Globe, no contract and it's mobile.

    • @AprilleShepherd

      Sounds Good... I am trying to find a service that is not "shared" and does not totally brown out in the evenings... I think it may be impossible to find in PH. Some people do have Fiber and are pretty pleased... it takes a more direct route to the local node or station. Sky seems to have a professional level package that has some nasty speeds... I will call and challenge them on it and see what they can guarantee... but those packages are about 250.00 - 300.00 USD per month... but if one makes ones living online, then that is a small price to pay for kick ass Internet.

We have a condo in Makati that we will rent out most of the time and land in Lucena City. You opened our eyes of possibly, instead of building a home in that land, to just renting it out and rent here and there. Any suggestions? Of all the communities in the Phils., why did you decide to live in Dumaguete?

    • @Lifebeyondthesea
      @Lifebeyondthesea  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      the biggest selling-point of the duma area (duma, valencia, bacong, dauin) is that there is a balance of the things i want and need. there's a mall, not as big as cebu, but sufficient with a cinema. there's a social hub. there's the cooler hills in valencia just 15 minutes away. there's a line of resorts along dauin. bohol and siquijor are just a short ferry ride away. the city is big enough, but not 'too big'. it's hard to beat, in my opinion.

    How are utilities handled?
    Do you run around to each place to "open" an account?
    or via the landlord?
    Are there deposits for the utilities?
    Great video.
    Some may find these videos mundane, but are very helpful to see "real" apartments and living conditions.

    • @Lifebeyondthesea
      @Lifebeyondthesea  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Perry Jones most places i've rented, i get the utilities bill from the landlord and then reimburse him. the deposit is often last month's rent and sometimes an additional 4500 pesos.

      I have tried the mobile wi-fi for Globe, Smart and Sun (the 3 major carriers here). Globe has the fastest and sometimes only network in my experience. In the province of Bohol I could only get a signal via Globe. If you are in a big city, you can save a little money with Smart or Sun. But on a smaller island I'd recommend Globe. However, for fastest speeds, go with a home router/dsl arrangement.

I'm sure by now that you have even more experience what what's out there in Dumaguete but, like the price and how well maintained it was at the time. I'll be looking for a place there soon and I hope to possibly have some help and direction from you on where to look. The question I have about the area is where do you find a really good internet connection?
    Thanks buddy

    Hi Henry,
    I was told about your channel from another youtubers "B Adventure" And I've subscribed. I already can tell I like the content and info given.
    I have a couple of questions on the rent: you mentioned in the comments your rent is a month by month basis. Is that the norm in the Philipines? So you are not forced into a contract?
    And from what you can tell is it a renter or landlord market in the Philipines in general and in Demugate?

    • @Lifebeyondthesea
      @Lifebeyondthesea  10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Every landlord sets their own terms, no real consistency there. My first one wanted 3 months in advance and a commitment to a 6 month lease. This one, only 2 months and month-by-month. Some landlords prefer to rent out to foreigners because we have the money. Other refuse to rent to foreigners because, from their experience, they feel we "complain about everything".

    • @Lifebeyondthesea
      @Lifebeyondthesea  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      djttv i am more aware of my surroundings in cebu than anywhere else. smaller islands are not a problem. but anywhere, you don't leave items unattended (backpacks, phones). i consider cebu safer than manila, imo.

    Is all the power 220v or are the apartments 120v ac as well?

    • @Lifebeyondthesea
      @Lifebeyondthesea  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      about 98% of the time, it will be 220v. (unless an expat wired in 110v) you can get adapters at the hardware store to fit your 3-prong plug into the 2-hole socket.. but your appliance has to be 220/110 compliant. (most laptop cords are). but small items like alarm clocks will just fry up in a minute or so. literally, they will smoke and even catch fire. so make sure your appliance can handle 220v. you 'can' get a step-down converter, but i bought two of them here and they both self-destructed within 3 weeks. (cheap chinese stuff, yet cost about $90 usd)

    Lots of barbed wire, it almost looks like a prison. Is crime that big a problem?

    • @Lifebeyondthesea
      @Lifebeyondthesea  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +talos50 anywhere you are living as the "richest guy in the neighborhood".. you need security. i saw the same thing in mexico and even the rural areas of southern california. i actually never took much notice of it, after a while it just blends into the background. most homes here have bars on the windows. most burglary/theft crime here is a matter of 'opportunity'.

    • @talos50
      @talos50 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +LifeBeyondTheSea - Philippines Agreed, right now in Toronto where I live it's minus 20 degrees celsius, your place looks pretty good about now. There have been many times I have considered making the move. A friend of mine retired in Chiang Mai Thailand last year and once he got over the initial shock he found a place and has not looked back. He loves living there.

      Richard Carraway for a single guy.. $500 usd would still be cutting it pretty short. but if living sparse and nothing went wrong (medical issues), it's possible i suppose. especially in a less 'touristy' area/island. or in the province.

    Henry great place, we will be looking for your tour of the city soon, enjoy seeing your adventures every week. Good rental $8,000, tell me please do you have an idea of a rental price in Cebu is for a similar apartment? More important is do you know the outer communities of Cebu not downtown, where to look for an apartment similar to your find. I will be interested to learn your methods of looking for rentals, thanks again, Rusty

    • @Lifebeyondthesea
      @Lifebeyondthesea  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Here in Dumaguete I'm still near province and greenery. In Cebu you don't get that downtown. In Consolacion, just north of Cebu City it's more peaceful. I haven't checked a similar place in Cebu, but I'd guess it to be higher by about 15%.
