I've actually been getting a little depressed at how incapable I am after a year and a half of study. This was very helpful, and you're so casual about the long timeframes of learning, that I don't feel I'm as far behind as others
I started watching QVC Italia about 1.5 years ago because of your suggestion, Manu. And I still watch it practically every day! It has helped me SO MUCH with comprehension and new vocabulary. One “game” I do is kinda like your third suggestion: if I hear a particular word more than 2-3 times, then I will look it up. The fact that I am recognizing the word tells me that I’m ready to add it to my vocabulary. And I love that fact that you can rewind it when watching it on TH-cam! (I also listen a lot to Italian DJs talking on the radio but unfortunately I cannot rewind the radio on my app!). I also do the same thing with expressions that I hear on QVC. I’ve learned many phrases like “vale la pena”, “a portata di mano”, etc etc just from watching that channel. Oh and I try to avoid looking at the side of the screen where they have the price(s) and item code numbers. I wait to hear them say it so I can get some practice listening to numbers and prices (it’s still hard for me to understand 100% when I hear numbers spoken quickly in Italian). So I’ll wait for them to say it and then look at the screen and see if I had the right price/code number. 😸 And another cool thing is that i also learn what English words are used in everyday spoken Italian! I’ve heard “sold out”, “one day only”, “stock”, sneaker”, “countdown”, etc. I know that doesn’t exactly help with learning Italian, but I find it kinda useful and consider it a “freebie” when I discover that I can use an English word for something! Sometimes I’ll repeat some things they’re saying just to have some pronunciation practice too. I usually put it on while cooking dinner, I’d say I usually do the “semi passive” listening that Manu talked about. When I first started watching it I could hardly understand anything. If anybody else feels that way right now, don’t give up! Now I’m at a point where I can understand maybe 70-80%! Manu is totally right, that channel is so helpful. Haha we probably sound like we work for QVC! 😹 I swear I don’t. Manu might, though. 😘😘😘😹
I have just started my journey with this beautiful language (two weeks ago). One exercise that I have given myself is to watch Italian Cinema on TH-cam with Italian subtitles. That way I can see the language as it is being spoken. As you suggested, I have QVC Italia on in the morning when I get ready to go to work, and I listen to Radio DeeJay on my morning drive. Any other spare time, I listen to Italian music, and watch Italian content without subtitles. I've been working my way through your beginners course on this channel. I love it. I am about to turn sixty-years-old and have always wanted to learn a new language. It all seemed so difficult. Then I discovered your channel. Thank you for what you do.
There is one form of native content I find usable as a relative beginner - and that is popular talks like TedX. The speakers are generally speaking grammatically and clearly, the topics are interesting, but the language is adult and real. Plus there are often transcriptions.
A tip for semi-passive learning: pick 5-10 words related to the product (colors, sizes, uses, occasions, descriptives, etc) and translate them. Pick 3 predictable and three less predictable words. Say them aloud a few times then listen for those words to pop up in dialogue. It adds a purpose and increases your attention, which adds a feeling of “ah ha” when your word is used. What you didn’t hear, was still reinforced by getting on the list and listening for it.
Brilliant. Thank you so much! You described my learning journey with Italian-2 years I’ve studied. Duolingo, Memrise, Rosetta Stone, children’s stories, Forever Fluent, “Baby” on Netflix....so many. I listened to RAI radio too (that’s fun-lots of sports). I really want to speak Italian, and have done just about everything but move there. This helps so much. You inspire me and give me...the positive attitude to not be hard on myself for not getting it exactly right. I will just listen. This is a valuable reminder. Thank you.
The qvc idea is genius! And today when I tried it they had an English speaking makeup rep. The Italian speaking host was translating!! So I got a great lesson while I’m working from home waiting for my data to load up
I was starting to feel like I wasn't learning at the pace I would have liked to, especially after spending so much time on lessons. Started listening to QVC and understood way more than I thought I would and it really made me feel good! Been doing it for about a week now and blown away at how much it has helped me progress. Cheers, Manu!
Fantastic idea with the guessing game for OVC italia. Love the passive listening into an exercise to see what you know, challenge yourself to pickup new words, and learn the rhythm or melody of the Italian speakers.
I used to learn english while listening to commercials. That was some 30 years ago, which means I had to listen on tv. Nowadays it's so much easier, and qvc is a great tip. Mille grazie, Manu👍
I have found listening to things like "Peppa Pig" in Italian helps 😱. I can slow it down and the language and vocabulary are relatively simple and clear. My granddaughter watches in English and now I have begun to think of the Italian while it is on for her in the background 😀
I just went straight to QVC Italia after this video and was so surprised at how much I understood, what a great tip! I’ve been learning for about 6 months and wanted to get an early start in my listening skills
I've been in italy a week now, have been using your speak italian from day 1 course, which has helped a ton. But I noticed exactly what you're describing. Full of confidence, I would go to the market or a restaurant and use my fancy new italian and then just have a blank look on my face as the person responded. I really love the QVC idea, I'm going to start that now. Thanks for everything Manu :)
I watch QVC Italia in Diretta from time to time. Some really good suggestions here. I mostly just listen and watch but also note the words in the descriptions like the colors and other descriptions of products. Most of the words that throw me off end up being English because they often don't use Italian vowels which I am expecting to hear. ;-)
For sure we'll (io e il mio gatti) be doing this. They understand Italian and would appreciate me improving my comprehension and speaking skills. Grazie mille!
I have not used QVC... but I do listen to songs, TH-cam recipes and favourite films in Italian and you are correct, the more we engage and immerse ourselves in a subject the more we program neural pathways. Thank you, you marvellous fellow. 🤗
Thank you for this video, you sir are a gem! I was feeling super demoralized but I feel a lot better now. I know what I need to do to improve my language comprehension. xx

I want to say Thank you for what you do! I wanted to learn Italian and thought I should listen to or watch Italian but thought why? I don't know it yet. I was teased. I was asked, why would I want to hear it, if I don't know it yet? You validated what I always thought. If I do passive listening my subconscious mind will learn it in a passive mode. I really appreciate your time and videos! Thank you!!
Guardo video. Ciao Manù. Su tuo suggerimento, guardo QVC Italia tutti i giorni. In realtà è abbastanza divertente. Apprezzo i tuoi video educativi e divertenti. Grazie.
I've been learning Italian for about 2 years. I've been feeling frustrated that I'm having such a hard time understanding spoken Italian. I understand most of what my teacher says, but that is mostly about grammar and I can work with the context. I fail miserably whenever an Italian tries to speak to me about some totally unexpected subject. I have an ear for language melody - I have mastered the pitch accent of Swedish for example, and understand Danish and melodic Norwegian - but for some reason, it sometimes feels like my brain isn't wired for Italian. I use Yabla for practicing active listening skills, and I've been watching TV series there (e.g. Un Medico in Famiglia) for passive practice. Thanks for the super video - I will certainly try your great suggestion of listening to QVC Italia.
Ciao! Your experience is definitely relatable! Of course it's easier to understand someone when the context is familiar. However, do not give up! Your suggestion Is so helpful. I have been struggling and judging myself for not understanding Italian at the pace i want. Been studying It for almost 6 Months .Now i know what to do. grazie mille
Six months is a really short time to study language it’s not about the months but how many hours are you putting in preferably daily. Because you need a certain amount of actual actual exposure exposure to the language
Great advice. I’m a student of yours but being in NZ never hear Italian spoken during my day. I’ve turned the channel on. So good to have Italian constantly on in background. I feel like my brain is sparking to try and recognise words. Glad to have access to your earlier videos
I have not used QVC Italia, however, I am a huge cycling fan of GCN Italia. It keeps my interest, and as a result, trains my brain to pay attention to the Italian words that are directly and indirectly related to cycling.
In our German Italian lessons we have in school we do is in a very similar way. Our teacher speaks in italian about every time something gets explained like grammar for example she switches to german. We started doing listening exercises with exercises made for beginners and now we started listening to news broadcasts about politics ( we still understand much, but we still catch the rough meaning of what is being said)
I've literally discovered your channel in the last hour, wasn't even looking to learn Italian. I just want you to know that the way you're constructing or rather instructing us is phenomenally helpful. Thank you Mano ❤
Ciao Manu. I love in Vincenza Italy for the next few years. I adore your channel and recommend it to all my Americano friends to review and learn Italian! Grazie mille
This is brilliant thank you! I've found having a teacher (you!) explain in English has made the biggest difference to my confidence. As I arrived in Italy and did the free course but nothing was explained in English and I found it stressful so I quit but others judged me for quitting. I want to enjoy learning not feel too much pressure to learn. I'm going to try QVC while I'm cooking now, although I'm probably going to end up buying lots of crap I don't need now 😂😂😂
Great tips! I teach English and use some of the suggestions you mentioned, but now have several additional resources for students - and myself - as I am learning Italian. Thanks again for sharing your easy-to-understand tips for those of us who have struggled with learning Italian.
I have taken to listening to Giorgia Meloni's speeches from time to time. Even though she has verbally run me over several 100 times, I am now beginning to develop a certain tolerance for it. The more words I learn the more I understand. This is a wonderful approach Manu. 👋😊🍷
What a brilliant suggestion. I am brand new to Italian but I have experience with Latin, Spanish, and French. I am always looking for something useful but not too enthralling to play in the background while I play on my phone etc... I'm heading to QVC Italia right now!
I have also found the Enid Blyton books "The Famous Five/La banda dei cinque" that have been translated into Italian. There are Kindle editions which work really well.
You give great advice in your videos. Especially about active and passive listening. If I spent only an hour or two a week studying, I don't think it would be possible to even learn it. Also, QVC Italian! Great idea!🇮🇹🇺🇸
This video was helpful. For passive listening do you recommend a beginner to watch movies in Italian language with English subtitles or to remove the subtitles?
Hi I just found you I am living in Bella Italia! I trying trying to learn and speak Italian You are wonderful at teaching I’m enjoying your videos Please keep them coming 😊👍🏻
Grazie, Manu! I have done a couple years of studying with various methods including Pimsleur, Duolingo, TH-cam Italian teachers, and watching Netflix in Italian. After staying here in Italy for 2 months I still struggle so much with listening comprehension and your QVC suggestions seems great so I will try it starting today. It makes so much sense. I have subscribed to your channel and will check out your other videos. One question on watching TV shows and movies in Italian. What are your thoughts on subtitles? Should I put them in English, Italian, or not use them at all. Grazie ancora!!
Ciao Patrick! Thank you for your kind words and I hope you will improve with our videos and help ☺ About the TV shows and movies in Italian: Maybe you can start with watching the movie in Italian with English subtitles, then after a while with Italian subtitles and, when you are ready, you can remove them and just watch the whole movie in Italian!
Wow! Thank you Manu! QVC Italia, such a simple idea but I never would have thought of it! Thank you so much for this tip and for your wonderful TH-cam channel, I love it!
Mary Anne Carlson Thank you for this suggestion. I’m interested in food, too, so these are perfect. I just watched the segment on ice cream and it was great. Not only subtitles, but he made several ice creams and gelatos into a couple of desserts, which meant hearing similar techniques multiple times. Great word and phrase reinforcement.
@@katypye745 Make sure to watch the episodes where some of the Italian chefs watch popular videos of various chefs (American, British, etc.) cooking Italian dishes. Hilarious.
Thank you, Mary Anne! Another great idea! I enjoy cooking also and I look forward to watching Squisita Italia. Just a note, I was trying to find a recipe for scampi or gamberi al forno, like my mother would make, which she learned from my Italian grandfather. Not the American shrimp scampi in restaurants. I have searching in Italian so I get Italian websites and videos. Then, when I come across words I don’t know, I just look them up! I haven’t found a similar recipe yet, but I did learn that a lot of scampi or gamberi dishes are made with the shell on, which is exactly how my mother made it. (Also made with the head on.... that’s another matter entirely!)
Suddenly, QVC Italia ratings go up and they're like "perché siamo tanto popolari? Ah, è grazie a Manu, gli dobbiamo mandare molte cose che non usará mai" 🤣🤣🤣
Dice Jadwiga: Ottimo consiglio - l’immersione è essenziale.
Grazie mille! This is exactly what I was doing. Except I love the le vibrazioni... so as a musician I’ve learned a few of their famous songs...which somewhat helped...but qvc is a great idea!
"... videos like this where we help you *learn how to learn* the language." A crucial concept! All very useful advice -- come sempre, Manu! Grazie tante!
Great suggestion, Manu, especially that we should spend time listening to programs outside of the grammar, vocabulary, etc. work. Enjoyed my first episode of Squisita Italia, now on to QVC!
So funny you're mentioning immersion. I recently purchased Season 1 of Greys anatomy in Italian 🤣 so good to know that I need to focus on Active listening also- I've now subscribed to QVC Italia
Amazing teacher with Amazing style of teaching
We're glad you like our videos! Grazie! 😍
The QVC Italia suggestion! BRILLIANT!!!
I've actually been getting a little depressed at how incapable I am after a year and a half of study. This was very helpful, and you're so casual about the long timeframes of learning, that I don't feel I'm as far behind as others
We are happy that this was helpful for you!
My stress is that it gets harder than other languages more quickly 😢.
@@joanlynch5271 If Italian is hard then wtf is up with Russian.
@@Jester343 Russian is terrifying and Im so excited to learn it one day! After italian then german... baby steps Lol
Easier than Arabic! Which I learned years ago

Thank you manu, studying by myself is proving difficult, the studying is fairly easy but the actual speaking and listening is the hard part!
A tip for semi-passive learning: pick 5-10 words related to the product (colors, sizes, uses, occasions, descriptives, etc) and translate them. Pick 3 predictable and three less predictable words. Absolutely brilliant idea! My husband and I are students of the academy and just love this video...grazie mille!
Benissimo!!! 😍
Thank you for your continued hard work.
😘
Thank you, manu. I will try your suggestions.
😊
I have taken to listening to Giorgia Meloni's speeches from time to time. Even though she has verbally run me over several 100 times, I am now beginning to develop a certain tolerance for it. The more words I learn the more I understand. This is a wonderful approach Manu. 👋😊🍷
Great job! 😊Giorgia Meloni speaks quickly but in a quite clear way!
I haven't used QVC QVC Italia yet, but I will! I did once watch Italian cooking shows which also helped..
True! Cooking shows are good! 😘
What a brilliant suggestion. I am brand new to Italian but I have experience with Latin, Spanish, and French. I am always looking for something useful but not too enthralling to play in the background while I play on my phone etc...
I'm heading to QVC Italia right now!
😘💪
Wow, phenomenal advice...
I have also found the Enid Blyton books "The Famous Five/La banda dei cinque" that have been translated into Italian. There are Kindle editions which work really well.
Great advice! Thanks a lot!👍
😘
buon consiglio e sì, funziona
Thank you so much . This is so helpful !
You give great advice in your videos. Especially about active and passive listening. If I spent only an hour or two a week studying, I don't think it would be possible to even learn it. Also, QVC Italian! Great idea!🇮🇹🇺🇸
what did he suggest for passive listening?
Grazie per tutta cosa
Manu, sei un genio!
❤️
Consiglio perfetto!
This video was helpful. For passive listening do you recommend a beginner to watch movies in Italian language with English subtitles or to remove the subtitles?
Maybe if you are a beginner with English subtitles would be better, if you are an upper-intermediate then you could remove the subtitles 💪🤓
@@italymadeeasy thank you, Grazie.
Grazie mille Manu
Hi Manu, your tips for learning are so amazing! Thanks!
😊
OMG!Grazie!Love the tip of listening to QVC!
😊
I LOVE THIS ADVICE ! Grazie Manu. Vado a QVC Italia proprio adesso. Ciao!
Oh mamma mia, ho comprato 20 paio di Sketchers 🤣👟
😂
👍😊
😀😀oh Manu, I love listening to your fantastic tips, will try QVC along with Carlo and Malik😁, Grazie
😊
Hi I just found you I am living in Bella Italia! I trying trying to learn and speak Italian You are wonderful at teaching
I’m enjoying your videos
Please keep them coming 😊👍🏻
Grazie mille 🌼🌼
Thank you for your kind words and I hope you will improve with our videos and help ☺
About the TV shows and movies in Italian: Maybe you can start with watching the movie in Italian with English subtitles, then after a while with Italian subtitles and, when you are ready, you can remove them and just watch the whole movie in Italian!
Wow! Thank you Manu! QVC Italia, such a simple idea but I never would have thought of it! Thank you so much for this tip and for your wonderful TH-cam channel, I love it!
Benissimo, grazie!
😘
I like the show Squisita Italia because I like food and cooking so my interests help me understand the language more. I'll try QVC today though.
😊
Mary Anne Carlson Thank you for this suggestion. I’m interested in food, too, so these are perfect. I just watched the segment on ice cream and it was great. Not only subtitles, but he made several ice creams and gelatos into a couple of desserts, which meant hearing similar techniques multiple times. Great word and phrase reinforcement.
@@katypye745 Make sure to watch the episodes where some of the Italian chefs watch popular videos of various chefs (American, British, etc.) cooking Italian dishes. Hilarious.
@@maryannecarlson5665 Thanks, sounds great.
😂
😂😂😂😂😂
LOVE IT! Thank you Manu!
😘
Dice Jadwiga: Ottimo consiglio - l’immersione è essenziale.
😘grazie! Continua a seguirci! Un abbraccio!
Grazie mille! This is exactly what I was doing. Except I love the le vibrazioni... so as a musician I’ve learned a few of their famous songs...which somewhat helped...but qvc is a great idea!
😊
"... videos like this where we help you *learn how to learn* the language." A crucial concept!
All very useful advice -- come sempre, Manu! Grazie tante!
😘
My confidence went way up when I tried QVC and was understanding 90% of it.. I may need another step upward between that and movies lol
Great suggestion, Manu, especially that we should spend time listening to programs outside of the grammar, vocabulary, etc. work. Enjoyed my first episode of Squisita Italia, now on to QVC!
👍😊
So funny you're mentioning immersion. I recently purchased Season 1 of Greys anatomy in Italian 🤣 so good to know that I need to focus on Active listening also- I've now subscribed to QVC Italia
Where did you purchase it from?🙂
