Manu, I have been thinking that pronunciation was the least of my worries, but yesterday I wanted to use the expression you taught us "e che cavolo" with one of my speaking partners and my pronunciation was so bad that I said "e che cavallo" which he didn't understand until I explained it in English....he laughed for 5 minutes and then he pulled himself together and we practiced saying it correctly. It was really great but thank you for this lesson!

Jan Keys "yes Jan, thank you I would love it. I have 9 speaking partners now but I still don't practice every day because of the time difference. I'm having problems with SKYPE. It is difficult because TH-cam comments are public so putting contact information on here is a bit of a risk...the whole world can see it! I haven't figured out what to do about this. I have wondered if Manu could help somehow so that his students could safely contact each other.

Really great explanation of a really common challenge. In English we switch around the vowel sounds, tones, lengths etc, and Italian is much more consistent! I’ve been told several times not to talk ‘so expressively’ and to ne more ‘flat,’ and your description of the consistency of verbs was an ah-ha moment for me. Grazie Manu!

Thank you so much for this lesson! I have been trained in classical music including many an Italian aria. I learned in these classes to over accentuate my vowels and to put way to much emphasis on them. I am traveling to Italy in 4 months and was SO grateful to have found your classes. I have recently started learning the language and my Italian friends say I have a good accent. I think the problem starts if you don't have a teacher, or someone to correct you (or speak with). Language books say in most cases to emphasize the second last vowel, ie: andiAmo. So students may string the words together like a song 'StasEra andiAmo Al cinEma", then there are exceptions like "cInema"where the 'i' is emphasized. So this video is really good, because it gives students an idea that a certain vowel is emphasized, but this is not to be exaggerated. I still probably make loads of mistakes with pronounciation, by learning all the exceptions. sAbato, il tAvolo, la mAcchina and so on.

English is a stress timed language, so I believe it is hard for English speakers to learn how to give equal weight to all the syllables of a word. It is normal for us to put more weight on one syllable and then to speed up, clip, and elide unstressed syllables so that the rhythm consistently falls on stressed syllables when we speak. I used to conduct in 4/4 during my teachers' lectures sometimes, and virtually always, the stressed syllables would always end up on the beats of the conducting pattern. Stress is our defining rhythmic feature, moreso than vowel quality and word length. So, we naturally overstress when we speak in other languages.

I need a video that addresses pronunciation improvement for advanced learners. Is it possible you could make one?

As an Italian/American. I think that we over exaggerate the vowels is because we Americans extend our vowels. Example; cappuccino. In the North-East American. I would say “caaapa-chinO”.
But the vowel sounds will change in America from region to region.
And yes the cinema does over exaggerate or stereotype foreigners.
Thank you for your work. Dave

When I was a lot younger I took Spanish lessons and it seems to have helped with most of the basic pronunciation in Italian. I think one small part of the over-pronunciation of vowels, for me at least, might come from the difficulty in transitioning directly from one vowel to another; for instance the transition in "ovest e est." I know it would be smooth for someone proficient in Italian but I know I have a tendency to trip over those pesky vowel-to-vowel transitions. Time and experience will help, I guess.

  • @silvousplait7847

Italian comes extremely simple to Spanish-speaking people. Pronounciation also comes quite easy if your language is melodic. Just don't over-extend the end with a high, then low pitch. I come from Guadalajara and a ranch in Tonaya; My accent sounds quite similar to italian, but more hillbilly.

For me, it's the pronunciation of the letter "L" and the letter "R" when it's in the middle of a word. For example, with "L", when Americans use "L", as in the word "lava", we put the tip of our tongue on the buttom of our front teeth. But when Italians use it, they seem to roll their tongue beack to where the bottom of it is touching the roof of their mouth, almost giving it a more elegant sound (like how you roll the "R", but without the vibration). I try to make my "L's" sound like this, because it's a dead giveaway that you're an American trying to speak Italian, but it's hard for me. With the "R's", I'm fine if it's at the begging of the word, but when it comes in the middle, it's hard for me to transition to the rolling of the tongue in the middle of a word. The "O" can be hard sometimes too because if I'm speaking faster I say it like the American "O" instead of the Italian one...they're similar, but you can tell the difference.

Thank you for this very interesting video ! I've been learning Italian for 1 month and it was indeed one of my mistake...
I'll be careful about that now ! ;)

The "flattening out" of the syllables is what makes native speakers sound like they speak so insanely fast! It is much easier to distinguish the words if one syllable is stressed, which may be why learners do it...

Grazie! Sono seminarista studiando a Roma. Mia nonna è italiana e parlo italiano abbastanza bene, ma quando ascolto una registrazione della mia voce, ci sento che mia accento è troppo gallese! Non ho delle difficoltà che Lei mostra, ma mi aiuta fare pratica nulladimeno.

I admit I sometimes do this when reading Italian, but my biggest problem by far is just not using the proper sounds in the first place because they're subtly different from other languages... when I read something out loud in Italian that I'm not familiar with I find my brain goes into backup mode and begins pronouncing the letters either as if I were reading Spanish or Church Latin, since those are two languages I've studied before this. The other thing I do is because I have studied Russian for so long (I hope that to be my second language someday) and because that's where I first learned to roll my r's (my native language has no trills or taps in ordinary speech), in every romance/Latin language, sometimes I find myself using the Russian r sound instead of the proper Spanish/Italian/Latin/whatever r's.
