I'm a student of Italy Made Easy, having started during Lockdown, and it's the best thing I've ever done. Being a little older, I find it more challenging to learn new things but Manu's courses are simple to follow and build grammar, understanding, vocabulary and confidence in short 10-20 minute videos. I'm so proud of how much I've learned over the past 2 years that I'm now confident enough to speak Italian when I go to Rome next week and that's a big step forward for someone who has never spoken a foreign language before now. Manu is passionate about his teaching and you will soon learn he's also a very nice person. I recommend this 100%.

I'm signed up for the Beginner Course for probably less than a year. I have memory problems so I have to keep at it. I also signed up for my own Quizlet sets and it really helps to have those. Plus the Italian verb conjugator and online dictionary that Manu recommends. All great tools.
I got behind in the lessons and then they revised them. I am up to the NEW Unit 6. Just started learning about -ERE verbs.
But, even prior to being signed up I had found Manu's You Tube page and started with the alphabet, numbers, months, etc because I have ancestry in Italy and research documents and his pages helped me a lot to get started and now I can read and understand probably 80-90% of most documents in Italian and a little less for most documents in Latin (which basically followed a lot of the same format as the later documents in Italian). Also some documents in French. Also finding a large number of fellow researchers in South America including some whose ancestors were from the same province and region (Provincia di Torino, Regione di Piemonte) as my ancestors and I have had to refresh my Spanish from high school and learn some Portuguese to read documents in Brazil. And even learn some German to assist at least one person whose ancestors lived in an area of northern Italy that was formerly Austrian.
But it all started with Italy Made Easy and Manu's wonderful presentation and system that is enjoyable and engaging and informative. I think the only problem I have is that I am impatient and want to know more and have a hard time "waiting" for the new information coming in the next lessons! lol Kind of like a kid at Christmas who can't wait for the morning so they sneak downstairs to see if there is anything under the tree yet. lol The lessons are THAT good. Grazie mille Manu and the whole "From Zero to Italian" team!

Sì, Manu! My Paternal Great Grandfather came to Chicago from Basilicata (near Potenza) but sadly, the language was not passed to me, although I did hear my grandparents speak Italian with neighbors from time to time. Therefore, English is my mother tongue. Now I am an Italian citizen by descent and trying to learn my father tongue! I am already at your 8th video in this series and I have learned more here than I have with Babbel and Rosetta Stone! I am going to continue to watch these videos and even replay them a few times as well as keep listening to Caffé Italiano con Manu, your podcasts and QVC Italia per your suggestions. I plan to visit Italy this summer for a few months and see what I can soak up during my time there. Once I get back and see what I have learned, I plan to become an official student! I am going to try and go all the way to C2 so that I can be more confident when I move to the EU a few years from now!

When you mentioned immersion, I just think of all the Latin American kids in ESL programs in the United States, who will go to class and practice English but as soon as they are out of the classroom you will see them on campus talking to the same kids in class in Spanish which is ridiculous. I am born and raised in Brooklyn NY and my Spanish is somewhat fluent but I still struggle at times. I met a Colombian student at my University who was in a ESL program and he would complain that his classmates would never speak English, so he used our conversations as practice and I talked to him in Spanish to practice. Like you mentioned that its important to immerse yourself in the language, so I gave suggestions in music and films that he would enjoy in order to practice English.

I always wanted to learn Italian. But thought it was complicated..I just checked out QVC Italia, and was surprised how many words I actually understood. I'm German, and I think that might help since the vowels are pronounced the same. This seems like it'll be lots of fun. Thanks Manu.

Hooray! Someone finally said it - learning grammar in a foreign language is nonsense. It's often difficult even in your own language because it describes abstract concepts and patterns. Thank you. I'm yours.

@@lucapagano7636 What nobody told me, when I was at school, is that anybody can take any GCSE they want. You don’t have to register for exams through a school or college. If you want to take GCSE Ancient Greek or GCSE Meteorology or GCSE engineering or whatever you are interested in, you simply register with an Examinations Board (there are several different ones) as a private candidate. If you want to take GCSE Italian, and your school does not offer that opportunity, simply take the exam as a private candidate.

I'm a native English speaker married to a Venezuelan whose father emigrated to that country from the Campania region of Italy. I'm already near-native fluent in Spanish, but I'll be visiting my wife's extended family in Italy later this year for a month, so I need to learn (improve) my Italian, fast!
I very much agree with your methods for learning, and am happy to see your emphasis on learning grammar in one's native language (nothing infuriates me more than language training courses that de-emphasize grammar; one CANNOT learn to speak a language effectively without knowing the language's operating rules).
My biggest fear: Spanish and Italian are so close that I'll constantly confuse the two (my wife has this problem as well). Hopefully your course of instruction will be focused enough to help overcome this!
Looking forward to learning from you!

This is amazing! I have not yet started your course but we visited Italy in May & although I took 4 yrs of Italian many years ago & my Italian was very rusty & I felt so bad. My main problem was not being able to understand by HEARING a person speak. It was all so fast to me (normal to the speaker) & hard for my (now older-) brain to process! Listening to your intro here NAILED IT.
When learning Italian in almost any program we’re taught mainly just how to speak but not really listen. Actual communication requires *both*. I don’t understand how all of these courses don’t understand that & why is it so “controversial”. I’m so happy that you emphasize this. I’ve tried Babel & Rosetta Stone & although they’re nice for absolute basic learning, they’re not exactly geared for “older brains” & some older people like me, have some neurological delays when learning new languages because we’ve been naturally conditioned for 50+ years of our lives communicating in only one. I once had the benefit of being around my Nana & older great aunts who only spoke Italian together, so it made learning easy back then. But not hearing it regularly anymore, & not being able to speak it with anyone - like I was able to with her - learning has been difficult. I stumbled upon your video this AM on my first search to find a way to practice again & I must say - I don’t believe in coincidences. 😉 Looking forward to this new journey & getting back to Castelcivita, Salerno and actually communicating WITH people! 💜🇮🇹

I'm German, and it's easier for me to pronounce Italian than for English speakers, because German is also - mostly - a phonetic language. We use also a few Italian words in every day language (like "basta" a. o.). I also like to listen to Italian old songs, and understand from that quite a lot.

Ciao Manu. I have been learning the Italian Language for several years and was always frustrated with my lack of comprehension of spoken Italian. I had heard of passive listening but gave it little credence.
I tried it for one week with 3-4 hours per day listening to TG2000 Italian news. By the end of the week I was amazed by how much more I understood the conversation, the speed seemed to had slowed and I was able to pick out individual words far easier. since doing this my comprehension has increased 10 fold. This is one of the best tools I have found to help me on my journey to being a happy little Italian language learner.
