Yo!! Surely Doug has gotten his jaw rocked before. I think now the show is recorded in L.A. years before it was NY with judge Wapner, Ed Koch. Doug has seen a lot.
I really thought this case was so fair. He shouldn’t have treated them differently and THEN made her pay all the last months rent by herself! He knew it wasn’t gonna be any security deposit left so yea he was like “YEA you can have all the security deposit” knowing there would not be any because he was using a portion for the rent and damages so she would’ve paid their rent like she did but wouldn’t have gotten anything back. That’s why judge said you want your cake and eat it too… but not in her court room I loved it
It was fair for him to hold the roommates portion due to the damage they did to the apartment. She is only owed her portion of the deposit if she did no damages.
Love that reaction when Doug asked if this has affected the relationship between her and her sister. The absolute ‘of course not, what are you talking about, it never would’- look in her face tells you that the relationship between these siblings is strong as can be !! Some people interpreted this look as ‘aggressive’ but I just see ‘stunned and gobsmacked that the question even came up’! 😃
I guess if if the defendant was Hispanic, she wouldn't have been yelling at him. Because clearly the plaintiff is Hispanic, it has interrupted the judge. The entire time this happens all the time. And he made deals with the deposit that he should not have without the plaintiff knowledge and then wanted her to pay for her sister and her boyfriend's damage, which was not fair. This slum lord needs to take a class on how to use the deposits correctly.
she should be liable. The landlord can sue the tenants jointly or severally.....she is supposed to have to pay for the lot. THEN she could sue the boyfriend for his share of the damage.
oooh yeah! The very IMPORTANT, "dont worry about that" when referencing the deposit being lived out in last months rent.... That part is NOT in text, but everything else is. She is suing the landlord openly admitting the place is damaged, so instead of suing the person who damaged it, she wants the landlord to give the money back? She said she wasn’t part of the fight.. but 3 minutes in she’s talking about throwing plates and breaking into the apartment after moving out and fighting the other tenants… nah she wasn’t involved in any fighting at all. lol
The ‘joint and/or separately liable’-rule works out the WORST for the people who take the MOST RESPONSIBILITY in their lives!! These people will ALWAYS end up being the one who has to pay NOT JUST THEIR FAIR SHARE, but ALL OF THE MONEY OWED, because the other side in these matters SIMPLY DO NOT PAY. Banks, landlords and every other money-claimant will ALWAYS take the EASIEST WAY to get their money, so they will ALWAYS go FOR THE FULL (!) AMOUNT to the person who has their things in order AND who feels enough responsibility in the way they think to not want to get into trouble or debt. The lousy, irresponsible and unreliable person, who just doesn’t give a crap (and who doesn’t care that the other person not only has to pay that person’s OWN part but ALSO the bills/rent/whatever of this lousy ‘non-payer’), walks happily away without a care (and without a debt!) in the world!

It’s crazy how ppl never learn. Just like the used car cases. “I bought the car but a week later a mechanic said it was garbage so gimme my money back!” Rather then just having a mechanic come look at it FIRST
The landlord deliberately tried to scam the tenant and is trying to interrupt a legal expert who was smarter in her mother's womb than he will ever be.
Curious why some litigants are filmed in a hotel room? I feel like I am seeing more and more litagants filming in a hotel rather than home. Anybody have any insight on this? I'm sure PC pays for a hotel but why?
The Landlord should've evicted all of them as soon as they started getting violent and destroying his rental property. I don't believe the plaintiff when she says her sister's boyfriend did the damage. Nah...you know it was you. Which is exactly why they both moved out.
She tried to keep that temper under control during the trial but we saw a glimpse of it when she was talking to Doug in the hallway. She most definitely did some damage.
Laws need to change so that when renters are damaging their place or not paying their rent on time, the landlord can evict them with one weeks notice. No living off security; that's ridiculous.
@@The_Real_Mier Anyone who says they're going to live off the security deposit IS abusing the system. If those people could be evicted more easily and quickly, then landlords wouldn't continue suffering such huge losses due to deadbeat tenants. Here's the thing -- for every tenant who stops paying rent, refuses to move out, forces the landlord to evict them, damages the property, etc., that's one more landlord who is going to be far more demanding with future tenants in order to protect him/herself. So let's just say the law was this -- if a tenant stops paying, the landlord can give them a notice of eviction and they will be forced out within a week. If that were the case, then landlords would not need to collect a full last month's rent at the beginning of the lease, so it would be much easier for honest and responsible tenants to afford to move in. Tenants complain that landlords demand the maximum deposit allowable by law, including extra if the tenants have pets -- well, that's because SO MANY landlords have been burned and lost thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars to tenants who destroy the house. If tenants wouldn't do that, then landlords would feel safe in reducing the deposit amounts. Horrible tenants have made life miserable for both landlords AND honest tenants who pay their rent on time take and care of the place, but just can't come up with thousands of dollars of move-in costs. You said that there should be a law that deals with those who abuse the current system -- yes, and that law should be that they can be evicted without costing the landlord thousands of dollars or more (in court fees, lost rents and property damage). So, like pchelloo suggested, a law that the landlord can evict them with one weeks notice. Every HONEST person would benefit from such a law.
@@Geronimo2Fly The things you describe are mostly indeed examples of abuse. But the system is there to protect the people who fall on hard times even when they have been completely responsible.
