I had to help my neighbor replace her smart car battery. i watched this video first and found it very very useful!! someone said in a previous comment how it was nice the video presenter mentioned the size of wrench required -- and that was the most helpful piece of information. I just replaced my battery, definitely a pain to get out
I had to walk away a few times and come back to it finally got it out!!! When getting a new battery references showing a size 47 / H5 I was so surprised that it was well over an inch shorter so it goes in easy and if you ever have to replace it will come out easy!
I just got an 09 from the auction yesterday, it was sold as a none runner with a warning sign saying, it won't turn over.
I bid on it blindly online, i figure i could fix it, paid for it and had the tow company deliver.
I thought i was going to change the starter or perhaps a sensor, maybe if i was really unlucky redo the heads or something worst.
Tow truck guy plugged his jumper battery and turned the key.
Car gave 2 cranks.
He tried again but car stopped cranking.
He looked at me and he said this car is going to run.
I feel almost shaky.
Went inside brought the old battery cables and hooked up to my other car.
Key turned, nothing
Let it sit
Key turn; a crank
Let it sit some more
Key turn 3 or 4 cranks but no fire
I almost gave up thinking it needed a fresh set of plugs maybe
Let it sit just a little longer, key turn and blast off.
Took it out for a spin, drives like a charm.
Needs a good tune up and a clean up, but over all is in mint condition, seats no tears and the only problem is a hole on driver's carpet that can be covered with mats.
Paid one thousand dollars for everything minus title that I'll be getting tomorrow
I could easily flip it for 4 right now
Look at the battery, it has the orinal better from back in 09.
This car was bought at the dealer last month and put on the auction this month, because the guy who bought it couldn't figure he's battery had died.
He saved me 3 thousand bucks.
I won't be selling my smart any time soon, you know that feeling when they say pig in shit?

Thank you kindly for this video! It made it fast and easy to replace my own battery! There was one thing that was a little different that I didn't see covered here is the fact that the mooring bar that goes over the battery has a fastener that's connected to the wires from the positive lead. In the video here, I see the hole for where that thing USED to be in the car you used. For a car that hasn't had the battery removed since it rolled off the assembly back in, say, 2011... it might be worth mentioning that.
My husband and I were able to complete this task with success. Thank you for the video...super helpful.
On another note....I would like to punch the designer who was in charge of the positive connector in the stomach. It was incredibly stupid to put the bolt on the inside where it is super hard to get to it and turn it....huge time sucker!!!!

Thank you I just did it to my smart car the only mistake I did was to install first the negative then I thought 'wait a minute there must be an electric reason why was first the positive’💥🔥 🥴 so I disconnected the neutral again and did it the last as you did it and voila! Works perfectly 😉 thanks again!

great video, i just bought a battery at walmart today and the wires scared them and refused to change the battery, now i can do it myself!
Same here. They couldn't get any battery to fit because of the metal hold down piece that has a lip that wont clear. They let me hammer it out of the way. Smart is a rip off
they are only selling electric cars now, i have a condo with no outdoor electricity, they lost a customer there, dare to be stupid, but I spent $1500 on a car that is maybe worth $1000 in the last 4 months. I will drive the wheels off it, if i can get close jobs, or park it and set it on fire in the woods if I buy a new car, cuz i won't get squat as a trade in. the new battery helped this week, it was 0F in Chicago, but it turned out to be a $700 battery!

Sheet, I’ve done everything from reluctor rings to dropping the subframe and engine change! think I should do documented everything including my mistakes, just fitted a android 10” unit that looks OEM
There’s one specific Part missing: when you disconnect the battery, make sure that the gear is in Neutral. Otherwise the engine may not start when you connect the new battery because the car doesn’t find the right gear. I learned this the hard way

What model? Mine was in reverse for 20 mins disconnected,! All 0k when reconnected in my 84bhp 2014 451…
I made this same mistake in my 2004 Cabrio. Never again...

Have a 2008 that randomly sounds the alarm every couple of seconds now in the middle of the night and needed to disconnect battery till the morning, Ty!
you have to be careful with the removal and replacement. i did this last week, while removing and replacing the battery on my 2008 smart, i broke the positive cable going to the engine. disconnect all positive wires and get them out of the way. it was a $50 cable and i was charged $500 in labor by Mercedes to replace it. add the $55 tow to the dealer, my battery replacement was $700. you are better off going to a smart center, if they break it, it's their problem. cut the cable ties to the battery bracket, move all the cables away, even disconnect the ground wires to the frame. the battery i removed didn't have a handle and was a bitch to remove, about 3 minutes with help of a neighbor. the replacement battery had a handle, dropped it in 10 seconds.
walmart was smart enough to refuse to replace the battery. my advice, cut all cable ties, undo all the cables in the area and be careful.

Just replaced my 6yr old smart OEM battery with a lower amp hour (smaller battery) with a higher cold crank start, in a uk RHD… to get the bigger smart OEM battery out it was quicker and easier to remove the console/cover, 5 torx screws, I can now remove this smaller but better cold cranking battery without removing the console.

Hello, I hope you could help me, I have a Smart fortwo passion 2009, I just bought it and I realize that when I set the alarm to close the vehicle, it sounds as if the insurance were entering but it is not like that, the car continues open .. you could help me to tell where the problem of the alarm may be since I took it and they checked the fuses and they did not find anything there, in the same way in the part where the car stereo is there is a button of One padlock and another one with an open padlock, none of them works even with the car on, they never put the safety on, hopefully and it could help me.
Hi, I want to disconnect my battery for a short period of time to connect up and amp for speakers. Would this be fine without losing any car codes etc? Key fob programming would be fine
Thank you for the video. We replaced today the battery in our company car. This is a terrible manufacturer design. The battery should be in Easy Access location in case of any emergency and second once you remove all the wires. it's really hard to take it out and you are running a risk to break wire pulling it out. REALLY REALLY BAD DESIGN BY MERCEDES. thanks for the video

Looking to find someone that has done this in a right hand drive car. I have no space to lift up the battery, it hits the heater, note my battery is on the opposite side to this.
This was a bitch of a job. There was a black piece of plastic toward the back of the battery. Once we removed that we were able to get the battery out and then the replacement in.
I don't know who the brillant architect was who wired these damned rigs..but BLACK is negative....RED is positive. The wires in the loom that go to the + terminal are black which is a great way to confuse a fellow.
They really did make it a tight fit. Pain in the ass to get out
