Just bought a 7300. I really appreciate all the great video and tutorials you’ve posted. 73, Chris (KC3UIJ)

Just another vote for crimping. I do both. I crimp them on and then use the soldering iron. The crimp gives a better mechanical connection and the solder gives a better electrical connection. Great idea and video.

Love the channel name! Welcome to the wonderful world of PowerPoles. #powerpoletheworld Please please please crimp them with a proper power pole crimping tool though. If you want to solder after thats fine, but the best mechanical connection is done with a crimp. There is really no need to solder with a good crimp. Either way, it was a great video. 73

Thanks K8MRD! You are absolutely right, crimping is the way to go. I was very disappointed that I didn't have the right tool to do the job, but decided that soldering was worth the attempt. The 7300 is my only radio, so no need to do anymore powerpoles quite yet, but before the next time I'll either get or borrow a pair of crimpers. Learning each day!

Thank you very much! I am definitely going to invest in a good crimping tool.

Good call - a solid mechanical connection beats solder hands down, and once you have the tool it would be a waste not to use it... I see many radios in your future. 73 AC3DS

I would recommend soldering crimping will damage the strands in your cable causing resistance problems

Hi Mike. The IC-7300 I just bought includes a POWER CORD with a white plastic "female" 4-wire fitting on the radio end (just like the one with the blue cover in your video). But the radio itself already has a similar "female" white plastic socket -- seemingly permanently installed (?!) -- in its upper left back panel 13v input (Connector #1). Of course nothing fits and I'm afraid to break something or get the wires crossed. WHAT DO I DO ?!?!?

Those who find doing these connectors a bit challenging or who don't want to spring for the crimping tool can find a variety of Powerpole cables online, including from eBay. I just ordered four Powerpole to Powerpole extensions for not much more than I'd pay for the parts alone.

Would suggest reducing excess length of cable to reduce voltage drop, especially using stand alone battery. Battery post adapter to wing nut stud and ring terminal makes a better low resistance connection than those clips. Could put APP on leads from battery for quick connect.

I'm always looking for better ways of doing things - thank you for sharing the suggestions. I'm not sure what you mean by APP though.

You should use flux. That tip needs replacing and you should clean and run it every time you solder, makes beautiful solder joints

Absolutely right! I was kicking myself that day for not having it handy and not having replaced the tip when I knew it needed to be done. Live and learn.

This video says nothing about the ham radio interconnect standard that should be used with power poles, The idea being that if you are doing some group ham activity, such as field day, all power pole users have the connectors assembled the same way so anyone can use anyone else's power supply, radio or accessory. There are actually four ways power poles can be joined. Look it up and use the standard.

Close up on just your hands as you work would be very helpful. I cannot see what you are doing.
