The Urban Courtyard House is a contemporary home that celebrates traditional South-Indian values. The location of the site was a big challenge, as it was surrounded by structures on all four sides with a narrow road leading to the plot.
The open to sky courtyard becomes the soul of the house, bringing the outdoors inside the house. The material palette is kept minimal, with a dash of bold colors breaking the monotony of the whites and the greys.
Principal Architects Raghuveer Ramesh and Sharanya Srinivasan walk us through this traditional courtyard house that encourages a great sense of communication between spaces.

This is probably the best I've seen on this channel. It's not huge or ostentatious like a lot of the others but it's very very cozy and actually feels like a home.

I was wondering for a while, how terrible it would be to continue living in an enclosed house all one's life, and found answer in this inward looking house through this video. So beautiful. Architects have done a great job. God bless the family living in this house. The child will grow up to be such a wonderful person in this kind of an ambience.
Wow really fantastic house I reside in Chennai never thought in a congested environment we can build peaceful and natural house. I love the courtyard setup sunlight and rain falling peacefully sit and relax....love it kudos to the architects. 👍👍ahh forgot to add that terracotta jali is awesome...

Hi I from Bihar, even all traditional house have courtyard there as well. This is something which I can call a true home and angan is the Sole of this house.

Always worries this type of open house concept for insects,and mosquitoes.. but I'm sure there is a solution for it.. natural light inside home will give you energy vibes and fresh feeling..

It is a good home and looks fantastic. Few observations and comments. The entire house looks fabulous with good lighting. One small suggestion could be to have lift for people as get aged after 20 years. Also next design should be to avoid steps, as much as possible as people after becoming old (even in their 30s and 40s too) can have a fall which could be fatal.

Everything is as mesmerising as it could be.
Just a thing, there are lots of staircases due to different elevations, but with the age and practicality, I think there must either be some elevator or some sort of thing that can ease up things like stairs.
Really appropriate parents for their love for daughter.

Nice work. Blend of Vietnamese, Gujarathi, Philippines Modern Houses with a little essence of South Indian Courtyard Concept. The Grey texture in the courtyard may give a traditional or aesthetic look but some alternative may be used to fill that giant wall-like artistic Sculpture stones. Because One of the members loves to dance. But Awsome Work Overall.

Well crafted house to suit the weather and atmosphere of Chennai. The young architects have done an excellent house curating the materials and concepts for the house.
This is one of the best I have seen on Buildofy.. just wondering if could have in the lower part of courtyard..this could really add more vibrancy and “more inside of the outside”

Very artistic and extremely awesome. I would like to make my own house in this design - except for two big questions. One - mosquitos; we all know how much Chennai is mosquito-infested. Besides, this house has quite many openings to the outside - like the courtyard and terracota jaali etc. and also the houseplants in the interior will attract mosquitoes?
Two - burglars. As a layman I am interested to know how this house would be protected from thefts and burglary when the family is out on a vacation. Having a security guard can be a fix, of course. But is there anything that might come much more economical?

I have a genuine Q . How abt the safety since it’s too open theft can easily happen. Secondly knowing how Chennai is u have given so many intricate jaali everywhere which is gonna attract dust just in few days . Do u have a solution for this . And knowing Chennai weather what is the point of courtyard u will only feel the heat . But on the whole it’s a beautiful design no doubt but v need to b practical fro safety and maintenance perspective. It’s not US or some other developed country where maintaining the house is much easier. Pls shed some light on these aspects too . Thank u
Exactly my thoughts. How to combat the heat and humidity they're inviting inside the house? Via the roof. Can they have air conditioning with such open plan cutting across all the levels?

I was thinking the same...may be mosquito nets..
handy portable mosquito bats provided for each family member that would equally keep them active throughout the night and few packs of disposable masks provided to act as dust inhibitor

Beautiful home, lovely positive vibes, live plants and trees and classy furniture. Good work by the architects, design and build team. Handsome owner looks very happy with his family. Wishing them the very best. May this beautiful home bring lots of happiness. I loved the sliding woodwork. The bedroom walls look fab. The blue kitchen was a bit of an eyesore and rajnikanth poster seemed contrived. But yet again I believe these were personal choices. The home would have looked better otherwise. But overall a super impressive home

Fantastic design.. love it! My only concern is mosquitoes, as I see to much of open space for the ventilation. How do they plan to escape from these mosquitoe bites. 🤔
This is just amazing work and I really like how tastefully this house is made.I stay near that area and would like visit :).
How to manage this type of open house with mosquitoes & lizards ? We like such designs and wann built one but worried about mosquitoes and lizards .
We have installed built in mosquito mesh shutters everywhere. The whole idea is to always try and keep the windows open for constant air flow but of course restrict the mosquitoes or lizards. Every 6 months, we do suggest a mild pest disinfectant to be sprayed around the house.

I was wondering the same about mosquitoes
We wouldn’t deny the dust part. But it is relatively lesser as the house is set way away from the road side. The clients are willing to do that extra bit of maintenance to enjoy far greater benefits.
But we assure you absolutely no heat. Instead the house is cooler by a few degrees. That’s the beauty of a courtyard if you have experienced one.

According to the architect if the kitchen is located in SE in accordance with vastu.... how is the guest or parents bedroom is located in north west as mentioned in the video... if kitchen corner is south east..... then guest or parents bedroom corner should be north east right....@ studio context kindly clarify

Me and my wife have liked this layout the most in recent times. Is it ok to buy the floor plan and material pallette in buildofy and get basic alterations done by another architect to customize? Is it worth doing that?
