  • Alai, a residence crafted by Architect and her team, stands not far from the shores of Chennai. Aptly named after the Tamil word for "waves," this home embodies the rhythmic undulations of the sea. Alai serves as a tribute to tradition and a tranquil way of life in a Chennai household. Interestingly, the client's daughter shares the same name, further intertwining the essence of the home with familial bonds.
The fundamental concept was to artfully arrange all their spatial needs along a prominent central axis, with a courtyard serving as the heart of this captivating indoor-outdoor abode. Each room, on every level, was meticulously crafted to offer mesmerizing views of the court nestled at its core.

Yet, this structure transcends mere form and function; it pays homage to tradition and legacy. The clients held a deep-seated fondness for the enduring charm of brickwork. Their vision was clear - to integrate bricks as a cornerstone in connecting their abode to architectural heritage, fostering a profound sense of continuity with the past.
What resulted was a breathtaking fusion of bricks and intricate motifs, transforming these walls into genuine masterpieces. And the Brick joinery, each brick laid with precision, each pattern thoughtfully conceived; they became narrators of skillful craftsmanship and boundless creativity. These walls now breathe life into the dwelling, embodying tales of tradition while exemplifying contemporary artistry.
Yet, this modern abode transcends mere bricks and patterns; it harmoniously blends contemporary design with vernacular architecture techniques. The incorporation of filler slabs enhances the structural efficiency, while a rammed earth wall, serving as an accent, imparts a touch of rustic authenticity. Traditional Athangudi tiles, customized to seamlessly merge with modern sensibilities, offering a unique flooring experience.
The choice of brickwork in this design transcends mere durability; it epitomizes timelessness. The patterns of the brick bonds infuse character into the very essence of the dwelling. These walls are not mere structural components; they are a canvas of heritage, a testament to the homeowners' reverence for the past.

Loved it. Earlier I used to wonder if only Dipen Gada would make such classy homes and what was the curse of Chennai based architects. But the new breed of Chennai architects are truly fantastic. While the brick and wood and glass and cane is a match made in heaven and has been oft repeated, this home thanks to some smart thinking elevates the mundane to very ethnic yet stylish levels. The seating in the living room with chettinad pillars and glass wall behind and a thinnai to sit on has enough grand theatre which will wow the guests.
The guest bedroom with the glass window on top is stunning makes the entire bedroom look stunning. The cane furniture and the perforated jaali flooring and the terracota pots embedded in the ceiling are all visually stunning. The architects team and the design and build team have done a superb job. ❤❤❤❤ I will surely remember this architect and build team for any future expansion in my farm house ❤

Beautifully done. Innovative architecture, with rammed earth walls, filler slab roof, well selected flooring and chettinad pillars. The architects have really played around beautifully with bricks giving a very classy front elevation. One thing missing is the grills on top of the central courtyard. Hope this is ok from the security point of view.

Two key factors are not considered in this construction.
    1. Safety aspects for preventing buglers entry.
    2. Birds/squrill nests. I am not against them but in this house they will build everywhere.
Apart from these two house looks good 👍

Alai means wave not waves....every time prounounced in video wrongly.... experimentation helps architect to learn and grow ....it serves their purpose but end of the day the people who live on it are not them...it should serve the purpose of sweet home with positive energy to the owners who stay in it.... Though it is irrelevant...not sure how many would want to live in this?

I'd hella want to live in this house, it's big yet it feels so homey, and that's exactly what you'd want in your house. It's modern, but it still contains all the traditional elements that again makes it feel home, i dunno what you're talking about
