    This makes me so mad. I am totally fine with them selling a console without the drive, but intentially making the console incapable of recognizing a disc drive is just scam to make people shill out for the X if they still have discs.

    • @MrBegmar
      @MrBegmar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      They could but they are probably too concerned with piracy. Xbox One and Xbox Series X drives have hardcoded encrypted serial number that need to match serial number of console. If numbers are different then console will not start. There is no chance to swap bluray drives beetwen two identical consoles. It's all anti-piracy measures. If they would make external drive for Series S then they would need to get rid off all of that. Communication beetwen drive and console would use USB which potentially can be vulnerable for attacks and expoilts. Developing a new protection techology would probably cost them hunders milions of dolars plus all marketing, production and distribution costs of drive itself. It's hard to break even with deal like that. Of course there is still chance that in future someone will break drive protection of current Xbox. Then Microsoft will need to act to develop new protection so maybe then they will make external drive on the occasion.

      This is correct. If you're trying to play videos from an external source, whether it's an external HDD, SSD, or Flash Drive, it has to be rated as a USB 3.0 or better to work with the PS5. It can play videos and music from those sources.

      On consoles, their DVD drives are married to their motherboards, and that's still true for the series x and ps5. This is done for security purposes so you can't install other disk drives on the consoles to bypass security measures. I was hoping that the Xbox series consoles would do away with this form of DRM, but we are not there yet. The disk drive is responsible for handling the detection of valid or secure media, if this did work, you'd be able to install games from burned disks. I was hoping to install some of my old xbox and 360 games that are backwards compatibile, but since it doesn't appear to detect the disk drive, I don't have hope that we could get this to actually work (officially)

      @@timelymirror7826 Too bad it kills the backwards compatibility program Microsoft was pushing so hard last gen. That's why I went PC this time around. For 200$ more than the Series X I can play all the same games with better performance (in 1080p) and I'm backwards compatible with literally everything except the Sega Saturn and the OG Xbox (due to no good emulators). On top of all that I get a disc drive.
      GG Microsoft, unironically glad they pushed me out of their [clarification for 80 individuals:] (console) ecosystem.

  • @epobirs
    @epobirs 3 ปีที่แล้ว +70

    The Series S can output 4K just fine and there are even some games doing so, such as 'Ori and the Will of the Wisp'. It's primarily a 2D game, so the Series S has plenty of power there. ('Cuphead' will likely get a 4K mode too, as it is also a surprisingly lightweight game on the GPU side.) For 3D, the much lower CU count in the GPU means trying to do stuff at 4K means a major trade-off on the complexity of the models. Imagine the original 'Starfox' at 720p with the same polygon count. It would be very sharp compared to the original but otherwise be terribly primitive looking compared to a native game on a machine intended to do good 3D at that resolution.
    During the months before launch I theorized a lot about the potential of an optional external optical drive for the Series S. All it would take is porting over the USB device type from Windows to the Series X/S firmware. Though history suggests if Microsoft chose to offer it you'd have to use their official device and not just any off the shelf drive already out there, much as they've done with the SSD expansion and past hard drives. It doesn't look like they will, though. I think they decided it would just complicate things and confuse shoppers, who aren't buying that many video discs these days anyway. It also encourages the used of secondhand games, which they of course want to discourage.
    Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are all paying close attention to how well the PS5 Digital Edition and Xbox Series S do in the overall market. The two models success level will tell those companies whether they have to continue supporting physical media in their next generation. They already know UHD video discs aren't a big selling advantage. They just need sufficient proof they can safely end secondhand game sales too.

    • @epobirs
      @epobirs 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Sendit Sunday Indeed. Modern consoles are arguably useless without frequent, if not constant, broadband connectivity. Physical releases are rarely updated, out of the GOTY and GH/Platinum/Player's Choice releases (if a new production run of discs is involved), so getting a physical copy of a major title in its final form that can be installed without any downloading is difficult at best.
      I'm expecting fewer and fewer major title in coming years to have physical releases as the consumer is weaned off any attachment to discs and cards.

    How dumb it would've been had this worked, the copy protection schemes even in the older One (S/X) consoles are way too advanced and start in the firmware of the drive itself.
    So of course external disc drives will never work as they are untrusted, unless the copy protection inside the console is defeated.

    • @tomburnham6640
      @tomburnham6640 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nearly. There's a daughter board on the disc drive itself that communicates a unique serial number to the main motherboard. These boards are married during manufacturing and so even a replacement drive won't work. It's more hardware locked than anything else.

    I'm not sure if this was mention but both systems and their disk drives have a unique coding where they can read from each other. The code has to be able to be read from the motherboard to the disk drive. That is why the external does not work as it does not have the code to talk to it. I think this is a software issue, which he hinted at in the video. It's not a lack of capability. It's the programming of the blu-Ray app. If it was possible to install 3rd party apps on Xbox series S you could make this work. What we really need is homebrew, or custom firmware, which would then allow you to install 3rd party apps. And, of course, a homebrew blue ray drive app. But it would have to be compiled to talk to the hardware Controller in the USB blu-ray drive. Not an easy task. I see the main problem here is that the blue ray app from the store is specifically coded to look for the xbox specific blue ray drive found In the xbox one and xbox series x. Otherwise, the software won't know how to talk to the hardware of whatever drive you plug in.

    Xbox 360, Xbox One, and now Xbox Series X disc drives have to be "married to the motherboard." There is a unique "key" in the drives firmware that has to match the "key in the motherboard's NAND. You can't even use the drive from one Series X in another Series X, until the "people" find a technique to spoof/flash the keys to drives.

    The Series S (XSS) supports true 4K video output. So a 4K video or 4K video stream will output to true 4K. The XSS even has an HDMI 2.1 port. But, it only comes with an HDMI 1.4 cable. But even a 1.4 can output 4K but it's limited on the bandwidth (10.2Gbps for 1.4 vs 18Gbps for 2.0 vs 48Gbps for 2.1) for supporting 4K, 30fps vs 120fps, and other features.
    Even in games the S can render at 4K resolution if a game is made that way (say a platform game) it just won't be the main resolution games will be rendered in (mostly 1080p and 1440p). The weaker RDNA2 GPU in the S is meant to run games from the much more powerful GPU found in the Series X at a lower resolution but still retaining much of that fidelity at those lower resolutions.

      That's unfortunate. Several reasons for that, imo. For one, discs eventually go on sale, far before digital games. Also, you can never sell or give away your digital copy of a game, or take it to a friend's house to play. Plus companies are able to "double dip" by charging the same price for a digital copy as a disc. Digital games should generally be cheaper than discs it seems.

    If I'm correct, Microsoft started encrypting communication between optical disc drive and the main processor starting with Xbox 360.
    This is to basically trust the optical drive and prevent piracy.
    And there is a video about Microsoft talking about Xbox One's security system, and they mention that the disc drive is paired with the processor, so that the disc drive can be trusted.
    So it's no surprise that external ones don't work at all(though I think they could definitely add support for video playback).
