I wonder if this external 4K player will work on the qled 1 connect box. So far that thing has been able to recognise and play everything I’ve connected to it.
I loved the method of the test. Multiple different tries is how a test is done. I hope that in the future Sony will allow a software update to accept external disc reading.
One possibility to test would be to get a official REPLACEMENT drive, because I believe there is actually firmware built into the drive that prevents other drives from being used or replaced on really ANY console. I know the PS3 and 4 HAD to be repaired/replaced with a SPECIFIC drive, not just any Blu-ray drive could be used if you had to replace it for any reason. This could actually be why it won’t work. If you get a large external drive bay and installa official drive in it, that has a possibility of working since the system will then recognize it as “authorized” to actually work.. best advise I can offer.. Anyway, do appreciate the test to see if this was possible. Does bring up the question if mods might come later to be able to get an external working for either the digital edition or for if your regular PS5’s drive broke and you didn’t shell out for a official replacement drive..
It's a disc reader not a Blu ray player. It still needs processing power (and proper licensing) to actually play the data off of it. If the TV even had a USB C port (which I'm pretty sure most don't) I'm 99% sure it still wouldn't work.
This was an interesting experiment to test out, unfortunately it looks like Sony won't allow it. It would of been very awesome if you could turn the all digital PS5 into a "physical" version whenever you wanted
Wouldn't be able to play phisical games anyway cuz all the console disk drives have to be a little different then usual to be able to detect fake game disks
I had this little conundrum when I got this copy of Madagascar on Blu-ray, but when I played it on my PlayStation 4 for the first time, it couldn't play the disk as I found out later on after a got a new one, it was because the first one I got was a bootleg (and the difference was the official DWA 2008-2012 Blu-ray discs have the details printed on as the bootleg had the details carved in; akin to PHE DVDs).
I don't know if it's a factor at all but I see in your video you plugged the external dvd to the front port. Maybe try it in the back as the back side USB ports are faster than the front side.
Moises Fox Rarely get banned for using a jailbroken ps4 or PS3 since they have methods to prevent most bans. Can’t brick a a system using a jailbreak. Jailbroken devices are worth more. Sounds like you’re working for Sony
have you tried plugging it into the BACK PORTS as i saw another video that showed if you want to use an external hard drive to plug them into the back ports only NOT THE FRONT
Thank you for the experiment! I was always wondering if they would put something in there to block other media reading devices. Shocked that they didn't put in a paywalls for firmware or a specific codec.
Most consoles have a daughter board in the optical drive, i think that may have something to do with not being able to play movies with that 4k player, the daughter board gets coded specific for each individual console so it reads the disc's info and data, but the usb drive is coded different and will not accept or access the rest

I had a lot of games digitally so it didn't really bother me for the most part but I was hoping if down the line it happened with my 5, I had an alternative. It was worth a test though , glad you did.
Nice vid, man! Would be great if they made an add-on drive for the digital version. The digital version looks cleaner, and having an option to tuck the drive away when you dont need it would be amazing. Until then, keeping my PS4 just in case I want to play something older.
The reason this does not work is because every single PS3/4/5 disc drive has a specific drive ID, and this is also programmed into the console motherboard. When the ID in the drive and the motherboard do not match, the OS will not play the disc. This is why no one can simply replace PS3/4/5 disc drive on their own, unless it is jailbroken and undergo a hacking process called "remarrying". In the digital edition console, the ID would be likely not present and the same thing happens, even when you hook up an external drive or retrofit a disc drive from another PS5.
and this is what I just tought about the isse: I think the ps4/5 games wont play due the way they are copy protected. The first few data tracks arent round bit a bit wobbly, the first thing the playstation always checks is to see if the wobble is present and if the coding of the wobble( its an irragular pattern, and unique for playstation what i know, you also cant burn those because the wobble is burnt into the discs) is correct, then the data tracks are being read if everything seems ok. maybe the usb drive wont suppurting the wobble check to see if everything is cool, is it a sony drive? maybe that will do the trick. if it was abou the linkage between the motherboad/brdrive then try it on the disc pss5 version, see what happens then. I think it is strange the motherboard is accepting the disc player because it will play blueray, will other systems do this asswell i there drives are replaced by one with anoher drice code.. I dont think so to be honest, its interesting..
Hey good to know! I really believe that Sony could add it in a software update, but honestly they clearly made digital for a specific reason, and that goes for media as well if you’re the type of person who opts for Services (Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, etc.) and don’t want the hassle of physical media.
Did you try using the USB ports in the back I know using external hard drives with ps4 games only work when plugged into the back and not in the front ports. That maybe the case for playing blurays/games.
I actually think it’s a good idea for Sony to allow external drives to work. What if you buy a digital PS5 and decide later on that you want to watch movies on it? Also what if your physical PS5’s disc drive breaks? You’d be able to just buy a new one and plug it in.
Nah pretty sure Sony would make it so that you can only use the disc drives from sony. And it could be an excuse to hike the price up. I'd rather they give us a choices like now than make the choice for us.
It will be extra interesting to see if Sony do allow an external drive (to play movies) in the future. There could be licencing issues or some such there, but I think Sony would still win out. From their perspective, the digital only version is still a great cost benefit long-term (as you can only play digital games, of which they get a much larger cut from, than physical) I would never expect it to work for PS games (even older titles), but movies would make that console more interesting a proposition imo
I looked up the answer about connecting external disc drives to the digital version of XBOX & digital version of PS 5. The reason being is the bridge is wired to not play physical media.
Two main reasons why it's not working. #1 Sony wants to make money with their disk edition #2 potential license fees are not covered in digital edition
@@devnol lemme rephrase that, the blueray drive and the cd drive are both optical disk drives. And both the cd and the blue ray are disks. They are technically the same but support different things and blueray is like the younger brother to the cd/dvd which is the younger brother to compact disks
You might be able to data transfer if you have your account on both ps5s actually. Might not be disc based on the digital originally but if you have a friend or someone personally in your life that are able to share accounts you can basically copy discs to hard drive and switch it all over that way.
So can you use external hard drives for the PS5 or is it clipped for that? Cuz I was told you can use it you just can’t play your PS4 games on the PS5 via that external hard drive.

Ps5 does actually support extended drive use the port that’s in the back of the ps5 the front one doesn’t work extended Drive for some reason
You sure the content protection is off. I remember ps4 had that feature i had to disable to stream
That's a good call out.
It's called copy protection or something like that. It needs special drivers which ps won't give in order a cd drive can read and play a ps5 cd

They don't allow it because Sony might start selling their own external drives later specially for the PS5 digital Edition.
I wonder if this external 4K player will work on the qled 1 connect box. So far that thing has been able to recognise and play everything I’ve connected to it.
I loved the method of the test. Multiple different tries is how a test is done. I hope that in the future Sony will allow a software update to accept external disc reading.

Lol nice pfp 😳🤣🤣🤣
Nice room setup. Looks really clean and neat.
The BR-drive will be recognized due to USB-C. However if it is not enabled to execute code sourced outside (DVD/BR-drive) this will not work.
That's actually genius
Nothing to do with the video but your room looks freakin' sick, I love how it gives me a PS5 kind of vibe with the black, white, and blue atmosphere.
Or and here's a big or you could just hook that Bluray player directly to the TV
Oh, yeah, didn't thought of it before replying to someone else
That's not the point he was trying to see if it works on the ps5

Jailbreak ps5 to use external disc drives. Whenever that happens
No you can get banned/not play online and it could brick the ps5 or make it jailbroken and slightly unsellable after
Moises Fox Rarely get banned for using a jailbroken ps4 or PS3 since they have methods to prevent most bans. Can’t brick a a system using a jailbreak. Jailbroken devices are worth more. Sounds like you’re working for Sony

Thank you for the experiment! I was always wondering if they would put something in there to block other media reading devices.
Shocked that they didn't put in a paywalls for firmware or a specific codec.
This looks rlly helpfull for those people getting a ps5
Use the back usb, on my ps4 the front wasn't reading my usb hdd so I plugged it on the back..... I did the same for my ps5
Can you show an video example?
wouldnt work for security reasons, if it did work that could be a potential hole in the ps5's security and hackers/jailbreakers would take advantage
Was really expecting for Sony to hack your TV and laugh at your face while the console blew up... welp, back to the fanfiction.
Are you an infamous player?
this dudes pretty cool, he doesn’t talk like he’s trying to sell you something.
Most consoles have a daughter board in the optical drive, i think that may have something to do with not being able to play movies with that 4k player, the daughter board gets coded specific for each individual console so it reads the disc's info and data, but the usb drive is coded different and will not accept or access the rest
Thank god you actually tried it no youtuber tried this and I was waiting for this thanks!

I was actually disappointed that the disc version wouldn't play it from the drive. I know it sounds stupid but my PS4 PRO disc drive hasn't worked for months no matter what I tried. I had a lot of games digitally so it didn't really bother me for the most part but I was hoping if down the line it happened with my 5, I had an alternative. It was worth a test though , glad you did.
don’t forget that the drive can get replaced through warranty
I knew it wasn't going to work because why would a random external blu-ray drive work on video games
Probably cheapest thing to do if you need it is sell it and buy another used one.
Dang really had hopes you could play discs with an external blu-ray that would be awesome, thanks for showing everything we need to know
Nice vid, man! Would be great if they made an add-on drive for the digital version. The digital version looks cleaner, and having an option to tuck the drive away when you dont need it would be amazing. Until then, keeping my PS4 just in case I want to play something older.
Yo any external hard drive on the ps5 works on the back part of usb not front should try that
My external SSD works on the front ports
What happen when you use one of the Back USB ports? I heard they have more power.
All consoles dvd/bd drives are married to the motherboards, and only work with that console, you cannot replace and play with external drives.
u can change the lens but not the full drive with electronic pcb
Laughs in xbox 360 external hd DVD player
So what happens in 20 years when it breaks?
No stands on any of your PS fives. that’s an accident just waiting to happen
Can u try to do movies on the PlayStation 1 with that
That would probably run at 240p
The PS1 has a CD drive so the only movies it could play would be Video CDs, and the model that could play Video CDs is very uncommon.
Did you try in one of the rear USB ports? Could be a bandwidth issue
My man, you know you can just use vlc, right? I see you have it installed.
What the point of buying the 100 dollar blue ray reader js get the normal one for games and movies
Thanks for explanation, this is amazing for nerds like me
and this is what I just tought about the isse: I think the ps4/5 games wont play due the way they are copy protected.
There's no reason it shouldn't be supported, as the disk is really just a key to play the game at this point
00:07 Its called a disc drive, bro. CD drives are , "CD" drives.

Dang, I thought that was gonna work. That’s to bad. That would have been a brilliant idea.
Bro I lost it immediately when it said, “can’t play the disk” and your reaction was, “what??” 😦
It will be extra interesting to see if Sony do allow an external drive (to play movies) in the future. There could be licencing issues or some such there, but I think Sony would still win out. From their perspective, the digital only version is still a great cost benefit long-term (as you can only play digital games, of which they get a much larger cut from, than physical)
I would never expect it to work for PS games (even older titles), but movies would make that console more interesting a proposition imo
with ps5 slim now out thats the closest we have
I looked up the answer about connecting external disc drives to the digital version of XBOX & digital version of PS 5. The reason being is the bridge is wired to not play physical media.
Two main reasons why it's not working.
#1 Sony wants to make money with their disk edition
#2 potential license fees are not covered in digital edition
Him: I got a BluRay drive and a BluRay movie
Also him: Imma put the CD into the CD drive
I see nothing wrong, a blueray drive is technically a cd drive and a blue ray cd is technically still a cd.
@@TheNpcNoob no, they're both optical media but it's not a CD. CDs are a different specification
@@devnol lemme rephrase that, the blueray drive and the cd drive are both optical disk drives. And both the cd and the blue ray are disks. They are technically the same but support different things and blueray is like the younger brother to the cd/dvd which is the younger brother to compact disks
@@TheNpcNoob actually they are discs not disks, a disk is completely different than a disc

You might be able to data transfer if you have your account on both ps5s actually. This is likely the first and most likely exploit attempt Sony thought about.
So can you use external hard drives for the PS5 or is it clipped for that? Cuz I was told you can use it you just can’t play your PS4 games on the PS5 via that external hard drive.
Probably because this cd player is for Mac of PC… is on the description.. find it on Amazon.
