For everyone who doesn't know what gain is: GAIN knob is to adjust the amount of ELECTRICITY sent through that specific channel. Dynamic and condenser microphones: Set it too high and you will end up with too much background noise and a distorted and clipping audio track.
I'm thinking of using this thing with a Shure SM57. Am I going to get a lot of white noise? Some of the more negative reviews on Amazon point that out specifically. Scared of pulling the trigger.
This is the second time i stumbled upon your channel when looking up recording products that are not as popular as others, thank you for another great video, answered pretty much all of my questions, couldn't help but like and subscribe.
Thank you for the review. I am watching this at the end of 2018. You have changed in short three years and the quality of your work has improved by at least twice as much. Thank you for your hard work.
Jacob Stanziole gain can make your voice or guitar sound fuller, and louder, but if you turn the gain up too high, you will start to pick up white noise, and other unwanted sounds, not to mention you’re more likely to hit your clip (max volume basically), which causes distortion and more unwanted sounds and such. Think of it like a guitar amp, they turn the gain up to get the distortion, but with the gain so high, it gets pretty loud, so they turn the volume down. Hope this can help clarify :)
@@nutbardelete but is it wrong to turn your level dial up above 0 DB? like for example, would it be better to adjust my gain to 75% while My level dial is at 0db, or should I put my gain at somewhere around 25 to 50% and my levels above 0 db?
@@Stanzi18 well assuming you're not going above the clipping zone it would be more advisable to turn up your gain to somewhere around 40-50%, and play with the level to a point where it doesn't start clipping.

Pretty snazzy review. Very unhappy with my live audio sound and talking to 4K people in a live stream with bad audio turns my stomach. This by far is the best review for a reasonably priced single mic mixer I've seen tonight and has definitely helped me choose another possible product
I should have watched your video before I purchased so many different mixers before this one... Thank you very much. At least now I can listen to the music(without recording the music) while recording my vocal for a cover song... God Bless You...
this is probably the best explanation of using a mixer i've found. my biggest problem is, i use a good quality headset, with a DAC/AMP, and windows just cannot keep up with it, so there's a delay if i want to hear myself talk. in discord this becomes a real problem, because i'm using DT770's, so i generally talk louder since they're closed headphones. i've been trying to find a workaround for awhile now. i'm also looking for a mic, though I don't need any of these studio quality thigns that most of these streamers have, but i also don't want a stick on (like a mod-mic) or shitty clip on.

i wanted to use this for my livestream. i stream with a dual pc setup. i want to run the audio from my gaming pc to the mixer. also am going to use the xlr with my microphone. will i be able to hear the game from my gaming pc while it's being output to the stream at the same time?
I'm so glad that I found your video. This is exactly what I was looking for to do electronic music live sets, since my USB sound card can't handle line out and headphone monitoring at the same time (I can switch between the two, but not make them send out audio simultaneously). If I listen to the music in my headphones, people have no choice but imagine what I'm supposed to play to them. Haha. Your demonstration really helped, and I'll be able to do concerts now!
Thanks for the informative video! Can you guide me through setting the mixer up with my PC and my ps4? I want audio from both through my headset with the ability to speak to ps4 party chat. Do I plug in my pc audio to the line input?
i recently got a behringer xenyx q502 and I have a hard time looking for a good review and explanation especially for the panning.. I hope you could do a review/test/explained of this product too one day
I used to love the functionality of these kinds of setups. I used to have a larger Behringer Xenyx desk with I think it was 4 pre ins and 2 'stereo' channels, plus the external USB DAC that you would connect it up using RCA leads. The only problem for recording tho was that if you had all the RCAs hooked up to the DAC ("tape in" and "tape out") you would get a horrendous humm even tho it was designed to work like that and had a switch to isolate the tape in etc. The best thing tho was when I just used the USB DAC for playing games through my mini hi-fi system it sounded AMAZING! =D
The hum is due to your not knowing how to engineer. It is a ground-loop because you have a powered audio device that is not grounded plugged into the wall and the mixer.
when you unplug the mic or any other cable, try to down your gain, and note that gain is not exactly a volume, the volume is the one that says mic. Anyways good vid
one of the downsides of this mixer, for me anyway, is that it doesn't have a separate power source. I have my PC and PS3 set up to this mixer, and I can't power it up without having to power up my PC.
I really only need this to get audio into a computer that is more convenient to use than my other choice. I'm not trying to use it as my sole preamp, but use a hardware preamp I like and using this to get my audio into the DAW without going through my limited line-in option. This should do it.
I've used this for years as my main audio interface. It seems like a well-made bit of kit, bit wouldn't rate the sound quality. I've tried using it for recording vocals / guitar and the sound is quite dull. Monitoring through headphones is not very clear. I suspect the DAC-ADC is not very high quality. Maxes out at 16-bit, and latency is high no matter what drivers are used. Behringer used to provide a driver on their website but it is no longer available.
What’s name is cable for setup ? Which one exactly cables I would like need for SubZero SZ-MIX04 4-Channel Mini Mixer ? I need use my microphone with pa speaker qr12pa Also for my laptop for recording
Your channel is the BEST resource for mic, mixer and interface reviews!! Love it! Can you please tell if I should use this or UM22 for making gaming voice overs/live streams. I have BM-800 mic right now.
Great review man, thanks. I have been wondering what to add to my BM-800 and I think I will get this. Is the Behringer Xenyx 502USB better? I heard the Xenyx 502 had audio lag. Is it not there in the USB version? Subscribed!
All interfaces have lag issues depending on the processing you put on the track in your DAW. I didn't have any lag issues on Mac OSX though. I haven't tried 502usb, but I believe it has the same preamps, so you should get the same audio quality, they probably just added more inputs/features.
todavia nadie de los que hicieron reviews de esta mixer, digeron que el phantom que viene de dentro del mixer, ES SÓLO DE 14 VOLTS CC !! POR ESO LOS MICS CONDENSER DISTORSIONAN !!!!!!
@Jason Bratcher you don't understand me... the clipping led doesn't turn on because only 14 volts reach the condenser microphone from inside the mixer, with that poor voltage (it should be 48v) the circuit inside the mic hardly has any gain and for lack power even with low volume sounds distorts the contours.
The clip light in mine doesn’t turn on, I’m using zoom to reach fitness classes and my participants can’t hear me at all, the mic I’m is working perfectly but sure what’s wrong
For everyone's information: I discovered that the 3.5mm microphone input jack requires a stereo connection, not mono as I suspected. I wanted to use a microphone with a mono connector so I had to use a mono female to stereo male adapter.
When you had both mics plugged in around 3:30 that made me think of a possible use for this as a two mic setup. Maybe plug the guest mic in the 3.5mm input while using the main XLR for my mic. Would that work?
Not sure about that in all honesty. I did jut that with a Tube PREAMP and nothing bad happened, You should look through some forums. I'm sure there's some folks who discussed it.
I have thePyle PAD20MXU, and it is the exact same. Only the buttons layout is different, and you can't plug in a headset. The mic is replaces by a "Main out" TRS port, in addiction the the red-white sterio port(s)
I think this mixer would be a great add-on for rehearsals or recording your sessions... Even as a monitor system. Do you think I could use it as a monitor system on a gig?
Thanks. The big question on this one seems to be: is a "mere" 20V enough to drive a USB microphone when 48V is the standard, or recommended, number. (Perhaps a USB mic already has enough Phantom Power, so the 20V from the mixer is extra insurance? And the XLR receptacle is for a traditional mic that doesn't require Phantom Power, so is the 20V of Phantom Power on the mixer a total waste? In any case, the sound coming through the 302 mixer on your test was louder, more present, richer (marginally, anyway), so apparently either a USB or XLR mic benefits from this device. (I was looking at it simply as a quick and easy way to mix my voice with music on "Sound Studio" (a software recording program that does not have sound-on-sound capability).
Lots of confusion over this excellent little mixer and onboard phantom power for condenser mics. Apparently it offers around non switchable 15v phantom power... not enough to power good quality condenser mics that need 48v. I bought the Behringer ps400 external phantom power unit... so condenser mic in to ps400 in to this mixer already providing about 15v? How might this affect sound... 48v in to mixer already providing about 15v?
Thinking on Getting this mixer with the Podmic, add bass for that "Radio presence" in a budget, I just wanted for streaming, I'm starting streaming even though I can afford it, it doesn't seems wise to burn on a GoXLR and SM7B
Thank you for doing the mix comparisons. I was gifted this mixer and wanted to know if it would make any difference, which it will compared to my previous set up.
Great review It sounds to me this might be the little starter mixer I'm looking for. Though I'm wondering if there is a suggestion of a good condenser microphone that would pair with this mixer? because of the needed voltage. Or what mic in general is know to work well with this mixer.
TotalD4 That mic comes with a XLR to 3.5mm cable - it does work on the mixer, but the 3.5mm socket only provides 4.5v of power. I'd recommend that you buy a XLR to XLR cable so you get the higher voltage available from the main mic input socket.
How would I hook up/need additionally to make three usb rode podcaster USB microphones work and which of the two mixers do you prefer for a first time podcaster...?
I am gonna order this tomorrow. One question for one last time. I will be pairing this to a dynamic microphone. Is its a good call? Does it have a switch to turn off the phantom power supply? Oh and the purpose is that of recording voice overs for pro projects.
It does not have the ability to turn off phantom power, and likely won't be sufficient for some professional projects. It doesn't have amazing preamps, and the A/D converter does allow for hi resolution audio if your clients require that.
I've just relised, that I don't need my sound card, and just bought that little thing. I think thad I don't need my accoustic guitar amp too (for recording my tracks), all that thanks to You, so yes, thumb is up ;)

I'm using a Neewer NW-1500 which works just fine on the 14.5v phantom power provided by the Behringer 302.
Alright cool! Big thanks for the suggestion! I'll check it out.

That mic comes with a XLR to 3.5mm cable - it does work on the mixer, but the 3.5mm socket only provides 4.5v of power.
I'd recommend that you buy a XLR to XLR cable so you get the higher voltage available from the main mic input socket.
How would I hook up/need additionally to make three usb rode podcaster
USB microphones work and which of the two mixers do you prefer for a
first time podcaster...?
On mac, I do not believe you can record multiple of the same USB mic. They'd all have to be different. I do not know how to do so on windows.
Thanks a ton for the reply Bandrew. Much appreciated !!!!!!!!!
@@Podcastage so can I use it on my laptop with an dynamic microphone like the sennheiser e815s? please reply
