    Holy hell. I can't believe how well thought out is this piece. I was blown away even before you got to the footpedal option. They managed to stuff 2 tons of tech into a 5 pound bag.

      TBH - their (notably) earlier incarnations, such as the BR-800 had some superior options for effects and mixing compared to its contenpories.. Used one for years, an excellent machine. The set-up via Linux was and is a major game changer for me... It made live work with a laptop running as backup audio device seamlessly a viable option... I always look at live work as a process of "problem reduction". If something can do what you need and want, without adding to the list if issues - it's a keeper. If it reduces problems, it's no longer a keeper - it's a necessity.

    I can't believe how feature packed this is! Even if I'm not a musician, I want this! I currently have a Behringer x1204USB mixer that I use as an audio interface and I like to have ALL my sound devices connected to it so I can use my Sennheiser headphones for everything. I currently use a bluetooth receiver for my iPhone's audio, but I want to use my good mics for the calls as well and that currently is not possible with my mixer. I know it's possible with the Rodecaster but now that I see this Gigacaster, I will consider this one as well 😲

    I've been tinkering with the footswitch (the FA-GC) and the Gigcaster over the weekend, going into depth with the parameters the footswitch can access and if someone wanted to use this as a 'backing track playback' machine this is what I've learned.
    You get a bit more functionality if you don't use the 'PAD LINK' function.
    As the footswitch pedals can access many more 'A' functions than 'B-D' functions, what I wanted to do (namely, start tracks with the footswitch and turn the EFX on and off between tracks) can be achieved but with a reduced number of tracks. Since the GA-FC has 6 buttons I can access 32 tracks via 4 buttons and with a simple changeover of parameters can access the other 32 tracks which could be changed between sets. This is fine for what I want.
    So by setting the FA-GC to 'PAD LINK' off, you can set the individual GROUPS.
    Choose 'PEDAL 1' icon. Then select GROUP 'A' and set the CATEGORY to CH 2 and set the FUNCTION to 'EFFECT ON / OFF'. Then select GROUP 'B' and set the CATEGORY to 'SOUND PAD' and the FUNCTION to 'SOUND PAD 1'. With this setting, when you press PEDAL 1, you either start the track on SOUND PAD 1 and turn the EFX on CH2 ON, or pressing again stops the track and turns the EFX off. You rinse and repeat for the other three PEDALS (2-4) altering just the 'B' Group FUNCTION setting to SOUND PAD 2, SOUND PAD 3, or SOUND PAD 4.
    To change the BANKS of SOUNDPADS choose PEDAL 5, GROUP 'A' and set it to 'SOUND BANK UP'. This way, every time you press PEDAL 5 the SOUND PADS ascend to the next bank. A cool trick then is to hold PEDAL 5 down and it ascends to the last BANK (8), from which you can press single presses to access a particular BANK (say 5 presses to go to BANK 5). With a TRACK SHEET laid at the foot of the pedalboard, I can navigate to any of the 32 tracks on BANKS 1-8 on SOUND PADS 1-4. Likewise with a simple tweak (changing the 'B' Group FUNCTION in each PEDAL to SOUND PAD 5-8), the pedalboard can then navigate to the 32 tracks on SOUND PADS 5-8 through the BANKS 1-8.
    I've made a tracksheet as follows, where my SOUND PADS in each BANK all correspond to the same colour. PAD 1 = WHITE, PAD 2 = RED, PAD 3 = YELLOW, PAD 4 = GREEN, PAD 5 = ORANGE, PAD 6 = BLUE, PAD 7 = PURPLE, PAD 8 = PINK
    The NUMBER at the top is the PEDAL NUMBER and the number at the sides are the BANK:
    Changing the FUNCTION to SOUND PAD 5-8 you can then access the other 32 tracks, This suits our setup as I perform original tracks while my wife who is a classically trained soprano, performs covers.
    I hope that lot makes sense. I will do a TH-cam video when I get the time...and that's not even mentioning the jaw-dropping EFX on this thing which makes a live sound so easy to achieve.

    JohnPaul, do you have a video explaining in detail (a step-by-step instruction) how to set up the Gigcaster 8 with the GA-FC EX pedal? If you have not recorded one, could you direct me to someone who has done it? My very specific question is this: how do I assign each switch to perform a given task -- let's say, I want to sing a song that has a part where I will be singing with the double-voice effect; then, I want to sing another part of the song doing vocal harmony (higher & lower). How exactly do I make each switch do that particular effect when I press it? I tried assigning the first switch (on the left) and it worked. I chose double-voice and the effect would go on or off as I pressed the switch. I tried to do the same with the second switch, with a different effect. It did not work, and it was somehow "hooked" to the first switch, meaning it would interfere with the operation of the first switch. I tried the third switch, and the same thing happened. I was not able to choose a different/independent effect for each switch. I am not a technically inclined person, and I feel that I have a Boeing 747 in front of me without clear instructions on how to fly it. At the same time, I've noticed that the documentation that came with both products is very poor, very superficial. I am having a very hard time trying to have fun with the two (Gigcaster 8 & the GA-FC EX pedal), and I am very frustrated. If you can help (or not), please let me know. Thank you for your attention.

      @@JohnPaulMusicUK Yes, JohnPaul, I have seen that video and other information, but it is all very superficial. The guy keeps playing with the buttons but he does not actually say press this, choose that, save this way, clicl here, etc. He is every enthusiastic to say that each button can accommodate four different functions at the same time... Great! But how does one actually accomplish that? As I said, I have a Boeing 747 parked in my studio without the keys to turn the engines and the instructions on how to fly the damn plane!... Yes, please make a video, do not assume we know any thing other that turn the equipment on and off. Make the video geared to all technically illiterate idiots like me who don't take things for granted and need to see what is done and how it is done step by step, please!

      No you can certainly use the rode pro mic (do you mean the new small square wireless pro with or the pro+ which sits on cameras?) either way, you would need the right cable to plug in but yes you certainly could.
      Signal wise, the wireless PRO run on a new series 4 2.4Ghz transmission system. There could be interference from anything else 2.4 but it’s rare. Yes you can plug it into an amplifier but just need the right cable and watch the volume. The nice thing about the Wireless Pro is that the receiver can also record too if you needed the recording for later on. I personally would use the Lav extraction so the transmitter is out of sight, clipped to your belt for example and the lav wire under your shirt. Hope that helps.
      This video is a UHF Version. It’s not the Rode but it’s kind of what your thinking: th-cam.com/video/uvAYhZux5fo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=EFinpzGEJtOx-7OH

    You've done an amazing job with this review. I'm getting into pre production for a community radio station where I will need to send them a 50 minute WAV or high quality MP3 file for broadcast. I've had my eye on the Road caster 11 and Mackie DLZ but I really like this because I'm a musician who could use this for gigs. How does this compare to the Road Caster in terms of strictly using it for my radio pre production work and recording multiple guests with multiple headphones and easily recording interviews using my phone etc etc? Keep up the great work.

      For what you want it for it’s great. You can pull in a phone call, you can have sound pads, multiple people etc and record it all in multitrack mode so it’s all separated for mixing later or all as a stereo feed ready to send out in glorious 32-bit. Only issue really is the headphone mix is the same on all 4 outputs. Can’t change it’ll the feed but I hope they update this. Maybe they can’t. Dunno.

    This looks great, shows the way things are moving. However as a gigging musician myself it seems to to be guilty of what I historical term as 'Japanese watch syndrome' ie it does about a thousand different things when you really want a mixer to be simple, especially if you are holding a guitar and singing! . I have used a Zoom LiveTrak L-12 Mixer for years and incorporates 12 ins DAW connection, card connections and separate recording and 5 programmable Monitor / Headph outs etc etc. If I see something better I'll get it and although this looks amazing I think I'll stay where I am for the moment. Fair play though great review and looks an awesome bit of kit!

I brought one of these a week ago and haven’t sussed out how to connect it to logic yet. I record my band at Rehersal and it would be handy to mix it better later on a DAW. I use the front input for v drums. It works well.

  • @RoyBrush
    @RoyBrush ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This thing is so cool, it looks like it has volume for four separate sets of headphones, but can you have a separate mix in each of the headphones, or at least between the headphones and the usb out for example? If you're live streaming, for example, and you're singing and playing guitar, I usually want the mix the audience hears to be a little bit different than what I want to hear in my own headphones (I usually want more of my own vocals in my ears, and this goes double if I'm mixing in other instruments like if I was with a band or something). I'm guessing that's probably not possible with this, but still, this thing is amazing for an all-in-one device, the effects alone are really cool, and for like podcasting or just as a small portable solution for solo gigs or whatever, I can see this being really useful for certain people. :)

    As a Metal guitarist who is using a GT-1000 core, first thing that comes to mind is, if there is a sufficient noise gate built in. Sufficient means, Threshold, Attack, Release and Ratio. The "noise reduction" of the GT-1000 sucks as it cannot be dialed in to react fast/tight enough, so I'm using a TC Sentry in front of it. Second thing is: is there a FX loop? And third... I assume that doesn't have MIDI capability? And fourth; does it have built in metronome / drum machine or something like that? And what I also wanna know; is that a metal enclosure because it certainly looks like plastic?!

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK
      @JohnPaulMusicUK  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s very interesting regarding the GT-1000 Threshold and attack etc.. obvs I’m not a metal player so was unaware.
      There isn’t a physical effects loop connection wise on the unit, no.
      There is midi but it’s more pressing CC numbers for the pads to do other things.
      No metronome
      No drum machine
      Enclosure is actually both - metal top and plastic bottom.
