  • Most have heard of Timbuktu but may not be aware that the ancient city is in the centre of Mali, where terrorist violence is sharply on the rise.
The situation in Mali is complex. In 2012 an armed conflict broke out when rebel forces consisting of Al-Qaeda-linked affiliates attempted to form a new state in the north of the country.
As a result, France launched military operations in 2013 to restore peace and stability. The UK Armed Forces have contributed to the peacekeeping security operations there since.
Combat is not the objective of the deployment. The Long Range Reconnaissance Group (LRRG) performs a crucial role within the UN mission. Conducting reconnaissance and patrol tasks, to gathering intelligence and engaging with the local Malian people.

It’s interesting how over the years the capbadge has rotated towards the left ear. Back in the day an RSM would throw a track if your capbadge wasn’t 1 inch over the left eye… :)

Agree - you put your beret on by cupping your eye with your palm and feeling the badge with your fingers.. It seems to be a Para thing, that spread after the Falklands.

Showing the roles of the different trades in situ is such a good way to build engagement. Really well done by the team who put this together, and the lads and lasses interviewed for bringing out the best of their service and experiences on this op here.

The colour pink (that shade of) is the best ground camouflage colour for this type of terrain to avoid being seen, particularly from the air. Have you never wondered why the SAS vehicles were nick-named by their occupants the Pink Panthers.

I don't know why, in all absolute non-joking seriousness here, they don't just have an ultra-light collapsible rod sun umbrella setup for that dog that they could tripod to his vest. Wouldn't impede him at all, it would be great for him, virtually weightless, it's not windy there. Would he stick out like a..... Well like a dog with a giant sun umbrella? Yeah he would but it's contextual isn't it. A lot of the time they're moving around trying to be seen so it wouldn't be an issue.

@@kissmymouth2982 Everywhere we go we de-stabilize and entrap. Hence why the rest of the world is turning to China. With China there's no history of exploitation, racism and theft. China doesn't care for your beliefs and customs, they just want to do business!. Mali has to send its financial reserves to France. France then gains all the interest from these finances and so benefits from Mali. Any mineral or fossil fuel finds in Mali have to managed by French companies. Mali basically is still a French colony and we have British troops there who are oblivious as to why these people are so poor.

There as to be a quicker way of making Bren type guns, whether it be printing, pressing, machining, casting mass production and quality should take top priority but not just gun's but of everything to do with the military. It's not that the UK as to be on a war footing but that we have a system in place for if we have to pick up the pace. Ukraine does need a massive amount of top loader machine guns and they needed them months ago and still need them now.

Wouldn't it be fucking amazing if we could have all of the UN and NATO there... Done on a cost-to-size basis so we have a big presence but it's kept fair in terms of brunting the cost. Somewhere like Latvia that only has around 20k vs. someone like the US who has over a million.
