- The Falkland Islands are the UK's most remote overseas territory, being more than 8,000 miles away from Britain.
The isolated nature of the islands means that the troops stationed there must be almost self-sufficient.
The job of protecting 2,887 islanders, 700,000 sheep and more than a million penguins falls onto the Falkland Islands Defence Force (FIDF).

I went to the Falklands in 2001 and was impressed with the populations loyalty to the Crown. Although they tended to be understandably shy with outsiders, they welcomed myself and those with me with incredible warmth and hospitality. I would fight for those islands

The islanders there are incredible people, I went in 2015 and you’re spot on about the loyalty to Britain, they are so grateful we came to their aid in 1982 they are British down to the bone and they voted to remain that way by a 99.8% vote in favour of remaining British, I often wonder if that decision would have been different if Argentina didn’t try to kill them all in 1982

My Grandfather served in the FIDF in the 40's/50's and I have a few photos, his cap badge and his certificate of commission. The kit they get these days is pretty amazing, they certainly deserve to get decent cold weather gear!

I’m proud to have led a very strong specialist platoon in the FI in 1991. For six months we trained and patrolled on the best training ground the modern infantry can inserted into. Everything I asked for was given to me to enhance realism and knowledge. My lads learnt more from that six months than from two years dossing in Cyprus. Harsh, arduous terrain, terrible weather conditions and all the place to our selves made everyone of us good, strong, future military commanders. And when we left it we were actually sad to see it left behind. God bless the FIDF and all who live in the most amazing place I ever served. JJC

I was 1I/C for a Troop of RM, and I made the same point. I honestly do not understand why we are not building a whole set of barracks for an entire regiment down there. Put the kit required, including Armour and use it to everyone's advantage. You will not come across a better place to train troops and supporting brigades. Streams, rivers, inlets, fords, lakes (like inlets) hills, mountains, long Elephant grass, tundra, beaches, plus four seasons in a day.
There's nowhere better for Infantry to play in.

Great idea IMO, costs very little to the UK tax payer, provides an enhanced permanent and knowledgable attachment to the regular units/squadrons who rotate through and allows the Falkland islanders to share in the defence of the territory. Best of luck to you all and god save the king! 🇬🇧

Ohhhh. The two Tours I did on the Falklands with the Royal Marines will always stay with me. Noting better than popping into see one of the settlements for a great cuppa and a cake with the locals. Fantastic people great place to visit. Long may they be prosperous and well. Love to see it again.
Definitely not a holiday destination. I remember coming back and seeing trees again for the first time and being like wow forgot what they looked like.

This is a military punishment unit, made up mainly of homosexuals, trans, and failed soldiers, who fight their main enemy, boredom and cold, drinking, consuming cannabis, and having sex parties. everything has its explanation... they are at the end of the world, in horrible socio-environmental conditions, and nobody would want them to abuse the local females, who despite being ugly and fat for the most part, have their rights. From Argentina, I have a great respect for the Natives and the UK's military. We know (or at least a vast majority knows) why the war happened: the military junta at the time wanted popularity, and after the war there's a lot of propaganda, idk if it with a good or bad purpose but I don't care, I respect today's position of the natives and their now British administration. We have our problems in our country to take care of instead of two rocky islands.

Thanks for your honestly. As far as we see it (I’m from the UK) the falklands people want to be British and have continuously democratically voted as such That’s it, end of story. Therefore we defend them the same as any other British people. If they were to democratically vote that they wanted to be part of Argentina, then I would support handing the islands back.

Argentinean here, I would not say its a lost territory because it was never ours to begin with. Maybe at some point, but Im more likely to blame our ancestors for loosing it that anybody in our current timeline. Even If we got it back, I would not want to be part of a country that forces an island to be part of ours or worst.

When I first saw the 40 total personnel count, I couldn't believe it was that small. Then I looked up the Falklands population - 2,840 as of 2012, which translates to 1.4% of the population currently serving in the military there.
By way of comparison, the total authorized strength for the U.S. military, both active and reserve, is 2,158,000. The U.S. population in 2020 was 329.5 million. This translates to 0.65% of the U.S. population serving in the military, less than half of that for the Falklands, percentage-wise.
Do you know that it's just the FIDF? There are 1 700 British troops stationing there and the population of the Falklands is around 3800

I seem to remember the FIDF was highly mobile on horseback all over the islands, which gave them an advantage over their RM colleagues on exercise. ( 70's )

This is one of the most intriguing border conflicts in my opinion. The insanity of the 1982 invasion by Argentina would seem even more crazy today, yet you never get the sense its completely off the table. One wonders what such an event might look like with recent military Alliances like AUKUS would the USA be less hidden in its support, would the conflict even last long enough for allies to get involved?

Feels like taking the Falklands back would be much simpler these days with modern weaponry available anyway, you'd send a carrier group down, get pretty much immediate air superiority then start playing with toys like the Reaper - surveillance and targetting would be so much simpler, you wouldn't be so worried about anti-ship missiles etc. And that's predicated on Argentina being relatively as capable as they were as a fighting force; which of course they aren't.
@@Pemmont107 well, indeed, the Type 45 is of course a direct reaction to the Falklands invasion. Anti-ship missile defence is so much better than it was back then and the F-35 as a weapons delivery platform is utterly unparalleled. Also one of the major differences between British forces then and now (which is no fault of the guys back then) are far more match fit, there's a lot of experience of directly fighting a particularly nasty enemy and not just that but doing things like long distance bombing campaigns with by the way far more accurate and capable weaponry.
Agreed and would just like to add my own comments.
Our forces are in a completely different state now. Some will tell you a worse state but don't listen to that nonsense. We've learned a huge amount since then, numerous conflicts across various theatres. The equipment we have now is simply on another level: Type 45 were built as a direct lesson from 1982. 1 ship alone could literally do what double the amount of destroyers & frigates did back then. Even the yanks are more comfortable when one is part of their carrier groups.
Starstreak and Sky Saber are also game changers and a half dozen each of these would cover most of the east Falklands. Even the US Air Force would have trouble with these.
F35 and ASRAAM would have zero issues taking out the Argentine air force.
None of this even takes into account the incredible communication/satellite systems, the training and equipment our soldiers now have.
The Argentine forces would be as well going up against an advanced alien force the difference would be so big.
We thank you for your service every day, we thank the fallen for their service too.

I always found Falklands islands interesting and the IFDF adds a another layer of my interest in the territory.
With all the people in the UK who hate living here, I am happy for my taxes to go towards defending people who are proud to be British, no matter how far away they are.
Edit: To cover off some of the FAQs in the replies, I personally have great friends and neighbours. I have seen in the news, on social media and in political protests a number of people who hate the UK. Some just rant online, some march on the streets and the worst of them commit violent acts. This is not unique to the UK, every country has its internal haters. If it's the first time you've ever considered that someone might hate the place they live in, well, welcome to the real world.

Funny how people think this is the only contingent of British troops, there’s mount pleasant and like 1700 People there a few typhoons and Royal Navy ships. This is a separate force of local, more in an advisory role as they said on the terrain.

Fantastic idea , true, well motivated and equipped local defence volunteer force. Every town in the Uk needs similar units IMO. (Home Service Force- disbanded over 30y. ago by penny pinching UK government!)

Excellent. Its not about the numbers- for one thing, the FIDF send an important STRATCOM message to potential aggressors. By having an indigenously-raised unti, it counters Aggressor arguments about the British government 'not being representative of the islanders'. ( Which is plain rubbish) At the tactical-operational level , they provide vital local terrain knowledge. There is so much about terrain that a topo map will not tell you. In this respect, they remind me of Austrailia's Regional Force Surveillance Units, of which they are only three. Each has an enormous Area of Operations, yet by identifying entry and choke points and providing local terrain knowledge to a force commander, they have an effect out of proportion to their size. Although the video does not stress this overly, I would be pretty sure this would also be the case with the FIDF?
I think the video makes that very clear; the FIDF commander talked about their local knowledge.
If, Heaven forbid, they are ever called into a real situation, you can bet they'll fight every bit as hard as Royal Marines and Paras (to name but 2).
I doubt the Argentinians coule manage another invasion - their military is a shadow of what it was in the 80s. Their airforce has handful of D grade fighters that are just upgrades of the original Skyhawks they had. Their Navy is a collection of relics from the 90s, stretching back to the 40s. Their only real surface combatants are from the 80s. They have no carriers, so their naval aviation is a handful of prop aircraft and helicopters for transport and recon only.
Argentina couldn't invade South Georgia unopposed, let alone try to attack the Falklands again. If the RAF combat air wing of just 4 Tornadoes sounds ridiculous, its because they're facing down a few helicopters, some propeller driven trainers and a tinpot collection of 1980's rebuilt USMC A4 Skyhawks. Its just no competition whatsoever.
While the UK learned and grew from the lessons in the Falklands, the Argentinian military never recovered.
At about 16 months old, Dad, "Fresh Out" from 15 years in and having me born in Canada due to an attempt on my parents life to prevent my birth... was brought outside in the Sun and heard my First words I remember, " I might have to go away to fight a War". It did not develope full scale and my Dad was not recalled.
Later in Life I would work with the Wife of one of the Helicopter pilots from that Skirmish in '82.

Prior to that the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha was founded in 1826. The Royal Family including King Charles 111 are descended from that, but it doesn't make them German.
My own Great Grandfather was German, coming to the UK in the 1880's. He Anglicized their name prior to WW1 (he was interned as an enemy alien as many were). So, my links to Germany are closer than King Charles', but I'm not German.

As a percentage of the population, a force of 40 out of 3,722 islanders is around 5 times more soldiers per capita than in the main United Kingdom.
that's around 1.07%, compared with 0.22% for the UK (147,980 out of 67.33million)

During the initial invasion the fidf acted as scouts for the marine and helped defend government house with their bolt action rifles.
Every citizen in the Falklands over 18 should be armed, trained, keep rifles/LMGs/radios in their homes and be organised into civilian fighting units.
Glad to see the islanders with a sense of pride in their way of life and history, and not afraid to stand up for it. Hopefully this defense force will never need to see combat, but if they do, I hope that whoever is dumb enough to try realizes that the Falklands (UK) is a member of NATO/OTAN. An attack on one, is an attack on all.

A correction to all the people who think only 40 soliders are on the Falklands Island's the South Atlantic has a small force from all of the Services including some troops on the Falklands who are not part of the Falklands Defence Force
I remember running a training cadre for the first volunteers in Goose Green back in 1983, I did have a picture somewhere must dig it out.
As was mentioned in the video.
The people themselves are the troops since they were trauned too after the conflict
Falkland belongs to Argentina and Argentina only you robbers, Thieves,illigal occupiers,invaders British Colonist. Go back to Britain.
There is a sizable RAF base at Mount Pleasant with around 1200 UK armed forces personnel stationed there. There are 4 RAF Tornadoes, a couple of British International Helo's co. Augustas that run ESAR missions and Sikorsky's for transport, and an RAF Airbus A400M for strategic lift/ maritime patrol + a Voyager KC-3 for aerial refueling.
There's also a batch 2 River Class patrol ship based in the Falklands and Royal Artillery detachment operating a Sky-Sabre air defence system. Last but not least the British Army has a garrison of several hundred troops there from various units who cycle through for training.

A well equipped, well trained local unit with expert knowledge can be enough of a problem for an invading force to delay it until larger forces can arrive in support.
They could also form the backbone of a guerilla resistance which as we have seen through history can be major drains in an invading armies resources.

The landscape just looks so similar to Scotland and Wales, and the people speak with a distinct British accent. People from the rural areas of UK would probably find Falklands quite like home.
A real shame they got rid of their AUG's.
It was an excellent rifle, and I think it made the Falklands defense force more unique. However, moving over to the SA80 makes sense, it means they can be more readily re-supplied by the MOD, and it's members do not have to do separate weapon handling tests when working with UK troops. The Bermuda regiment and Cayman islands defense forces also recently made the switch to the SA80.

@@monarchist1838 Sir agree. Having done the TOETs for both weapons, once on exchange with the Brit Army in 2012, I agree. But being Australian, I am of course biased! The SA 80 has some fiddly bits in stripping which I think would confound me if having to do it at speed in the dark , but at the end of the day, it is not about 'better' , it comes down to what you are used to and muscle memory.
@@monarchist1838 The Royal Bermuda Regiment has used the L85A2 since 2015. The H&K G36 had been selected as the replacement for the ageing Ruger mini-14. A British Army officer serving with the RBR was able to arrange delivery of older versions of the British rifle, which were surplus to requirements, instead. Cayman adopted the same rifle when its regiment was stood up in 2021.
Rarely discussed behind the scenes local private citizens have a thriving target rifle and pistol club. That enjoys local popularity and official support. I understand Palma rifles and 50 meter pistol. These are really superb firearms the average UK citizen would rarely see much less handle or perhaps never own. There's a good chance these loyal reservists are avid target shooters, with some years of trigger time before donning the uniform.

The British family of nations is a term often used to describe the relationship with the overseas territories. They are autonomous except in the areas of foreign affairs and defence, if I am not mistaken. They have different internet domains, sports teams and governments. Britishness is always part of a dual identity. English and British, Scottish and British, Gibraltarian and British etc…
In the US for example Puerto Rico, as a territory also enjoys a type of nationhood. It’s own sport teams for example. Or even states like Hawaii with their own national surfing team.

Puerto Rico has a governor that still has to abide by the President of the United States, Puerto Rico has to have a constitution modeled after the United States Constitution, and have their government like the mainland. In certain cases, residents do have to pay federal income taxes, which are paid to the federal government back in Washington DC. Puerto Rico has a representative in the US House of Representatives, but unfortunately they cannot vote. This is different from the British overseas territories. Hawaii is a full fledged state of the United States, they’re under the jurisdiction of the federal government, have to abide by federal laws and regulations, have to pay federal taxes, and have to go by the mainland. Both residents of Puerto Rico and Hawaii are US citizens by birth, while Puerto Rico is second class, due to no representation and voting rights, and more, while Hawaii is fully represented in Congress, has the right to vote for the President, and has to go by federal laws and rulings, which is completely different from a British overseas territory.
