      No such thing as a dead cartridge as far as I'm concerned. Just because it's not the most popular with the masses, doesn't mean it won't still get the job done, or that it's any less fun to shoot, unreliable, or less easy to handload. That in a nutshell sums up the 40 S&W and the 357 Sig in my book.

    The .40 is possibly the perfect semi auto cartridge. Nothing against 10mm but the reason the .40 was created wasn't so much to do with 10mm recoil, it was 10mm SIZE, afterall the .40 load was a ballistic twin of the 10mm load they had chosen so if anything, the .40 would have had more recoil because the gun was smaller/lighter. That's the greatness about the .40 S&W, it fits in 9mm size guns, so even with 10mm resurgence (to a degree, it's still less popular than .40) there's still room for the .40 due to platform size. With .40 you get 9mm size and about 90% the power of a 10mm. Can't beat that.

    • @bennwj
      @bennwj ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I think the 10mm in a Glock 29 is the perfect “do it all” cartridge/gun combo. It can be downloaded to .40 S&W level for defensive use against 2 legged predators, or loaded heavy with some Buffalo Bore for defensive use against hairy things with teeth and claws in the woods. In a Glock 20 or one of the Springfield or even 1911 styles it makes a pretty good medium game hunting round. Recoil with hot 10mm loads is certainly more than .40, but everything has a trade off. 10mm is definitely a larger frame handgun and its harder to conceal. .40 will always work better than 9mm. If it was “better” than 9mm 10 years ago, its still better now unless all these advancements in bullet technology only apply to 9mm.

      Agreed, absolutely. The Federal 180 grain HST 40 S&W round is arguably THE BEST PERFORMING all around SD hollow-point round out there in any common auto caliber, short of a 10mm (and it performs VERY NEARLY as well in gel as the Sig Sauer 180 grain 10mm V-crown round...FROM A SMALLER, LIGHTER, MORE COMPACT GUN than a 10mm to boot). But, 40 S&W, HOWEVER, IN FMJ'S/HARDCAST ammo has INFERIOR PENETRATION to 9mm, .357 Sig and 10mm. So, 40S&W is potentially equal to 10mm for SELF DEFENSE, but 10mm AND EVEN 357 SIG is probably better for hunting and animal defense than .40S&W, sadly.

    • @bennwj
      @bennwj 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, not all 10mm is "watered down". There are still companies loading full power 10mm....Sig, Federal etc. Buffalo Bore isn't full power 10mm. It's ABOVE full power 10mm, but if you have a good gun (Glock, Springfield etc) it is more than safe to shoot. You WILL need to add a heavier recoil spring because the springs in a Glock are weak....the expect 99% of people who buy one on 10mm to shoot cheap, underpowered 10mm ammo, and the slide opens up before the bullet leaves the barrel. Velocities are all over the place. I put 24lb springs in both my Glocks and velocities spreads are great and they even function with (most) downloaded ammo. But like I said if you are shooting downloaded 10mm you should just be shooting 40. I now only carry my G29 in the woods. For daily carry its a G27 (40) or a G26 (9mm)@@johns3153

      @@warrengreen3217I agree with @adamginther5331 about the frame strengthening and own an example of this concept: Browning HiPower in 40S&W.
      After about 2k rounds, the original forged MKIII frames would warp even though the slide and recoil spring were beefed up to handle the 40. In 1993, FN began using harder cast frames in an effort to resolve this issue and to my knowledge, has no longer been an area of concern.
      I'll credit the late Stephan A. Camp for putting all this in print in his "The Shooter's Guide to the Browning Hi Power".

We had so many that used 40's that they completely filled one of our showcases and no one wanted them. In early 2020 that began to change as new guns in any caliber were getting hard to find. We sold almost completely out of inventory. Things have somewhat returned to normal and the forty seems to be doing okay again. By far the number caliber gun we sell is 9mm though.

      I think maybe the Hwy patrol uses the 357 Sig so much because it penetrates through car doors better than 40 or 9 and being as they do traffic stops almost exclusively and not domestic calls, etc. the 357 sig is the best round for their specific role. So in that respect I can’t disagree with their choice in duty round. But I think for most people, LE or civilian, there’s better rounds. Especially when you start thinking about cost to train and be proficient and also having to shoot from inside a closed space like a small room or inside your car. A 357 Sig would likely cause permanent hearing loss whereas a 9 or 40 would just make your ears ring for a day. I also know that many park rangers and game wardens carry 357 Sig as well to better deal with grizzlies and moose. For that situation I’ll take my 10mm Glock though.

    My prediction is as follows: If AWBs are good and truly dead (which they may be ... fingers crossed, knock wood and all that), .40 will slowly fade away. However if AWBs are upheld, as more and more blue states enact them and mag limits, you'll see .40 rise back up in popularity.
    I got my first .40 back during the 94 ban and frankly the reason was "if I'm limited to 10 rounds, they might as well be more powerful rounds".

    Both cartridges will be manufactured for decades to come. While handgun choices, and factory loadings may be limited, if you are happy with the one (or more) you already own, they will continue to serve you as well as they ever did.
    After that, their bore sizes are used by other, more popular cartridges, so bullets will be available and you can lay in a stock of cartridge cases. Handloading is a thing.
    I would advise people using these, that if there is a particular defensive load you prefer for carry, stock up on it as it could be discontinued in the future.

One example the 30-06 , from which the .270 and the .243 were born.All are very popular cartridges that can be found in almost any deer hunting camp in the southern U.S. ,that is of course along with the various Nitro Express offerings, deer get pretty big down south and sometimes require, something a bit more, than your standard deer rifle cartridge.

    I like 40SW, although I would agree the 40SW is a compromise against the 10MM, but I don't think the 357 Sig is. Companies like Underwood, Grizzly, and Buffalo Bore make 357 Sig rounds that have equal or only slightly less energy than hot 10mm loads, with 357 Sig having the advantage of being available in smaller lighter guns. Not sure why, but 10mm pistols are usually a lot thicker despite having the same case diameter as 40SW and 357 Sig. The SAAMI pressures for a 357 Sig (40,000) are actually higher than the 10mm (37,500). Add a holster and you are carrying a very thick mass. The bullets are also heavy. In most tests I've seen, the 357 Sig penetrates as deep as 10mm. The 357 Sig also has the advantage of a lighter recoil than even the 40SW, because of the lighter bullets. The only disadvantage of the 357 Sig is the cost of the ammo and the muzzle blast.
    My daily carry is a Sig P224 in 357 Sig. I strong-side carry without a holster. I use the 65 gr (maybe 68 gr depending where your reading) Underwood Extreme Defender. I've clocked that round at 2130 fps out of my P224 and over 2220 fps out of my P226. That's around 655 fpe and 711 fpe respectively. Underwood advertises their 10mm 115gr Extreme Defender at 738 fpe. The 357 Sig is a great round. I've been sometimes carrying a Springfield XDM Elite 3.8 in 10mm. I appendix carry that gun using a nylon holster that I cut down the back to fit the red dot. I can shoot that gun really well, but it's a chunk to carry, and I just don't really like single action semi-autos. I just bought a FN FNX pistol that I'll probably convert to 460 Rowland. I normally Mexican carry my DAO and DA/SA pistols. As big as the FN FNX is, it is more comfortable to carry down the front of my pants than any compact-sized 9mm with a holster. I always wear an open vest and it easily conceals the FN's giant grip.
    Yankee will probably accuse me of "compensating" for something, but I've seen too many videos of guys trading hits with 9MMs. People shot with AR15s usually just drop. I think power matters and 357 Sig, 10mm, and 460 Rowland are powerful semi-autos.

    From what I've seen the 357 Sig outperforms the 9mm in every way. A couple less rounds but more velocity, more energy and flatter trajectory. Personally I can't stand the 9mm. It's adequate, but I think that the 327 Federal mag is a better round. It may be only a 32 caliber, but it has almost the same ballistics as the 357 mag as far as velocity and energy go. Same goes for the 357 Sig. I EDC a 45 but I agree with you that the 357 is the best all around cartridge. Plus you can plink and target shoot with 38s. A 9mm only has three common bullet weights and the cartridge dimensions has to be perfect for it to feed and eject reliably. That's true for any semi auto caliber. All of the 9mm or nothing fanboys really need to have an open mind and give a revolver a try. They might just like it. All of us old folks lived this long without a "high" capacity semi auto for a reason. One 357 mag bullet in the right place beats 17 rounds of 9mm in all of the wrong places.

      Not narcing on 357/357 sig, 40, 45 at all. I don’t think a perp will know the difference. And if you look at the ft lbs difference between 9mm and the 40, you’re only looking at about a 60 ft lb difference and the 9mm makes up for it in capacity. You can look at average rounds used in shootings all you want. Get in an active shooter situation or someone high on meth and suddenly you maybe wishing you opted for more rounds. The most important factor besides shot placement, which most people tend to shoot 9mm more accurately, is penetration. 9mm and 40 are about dead even. 357/357 sig fair better and 45 ACP falls short. I’ll also note that 357 sig is prohibitively more expensive to train with for me. Now one thing to consider, and no one brings this up. 357/sig are waaaaay louder to shoot. Having to shoot an attacker while in a small room or even worse, while seated in your vehicle can mean the difference between permanent hearing loss with a 357/357 sig, or just having your ears ring all day with a 9 or 40. I’ve carried all calibers mentioned. For me it’s 9mm for the hoods and 10mm for the woods. For anyone doubting the 9mm Parabellum, talk to anyone who spent time in Africa. It is THE handgun caliber there and kills many people over there. Good and bad. When it’s all said and done, Carry what you want. As long as you’re using a good hollow point round, they will all do the job well as long as you can do your part to put the rounds in the pumps and pipes. If all the rounds above are meeting the FBI penetration standards and shot placement is the main factor, I prefer having more rounds and more controllable rounds to increase my odds of getting a good hit.

Knock down power is insignificant among handguns. You only start to see that means anything when you start talking about rifle calibers. Handgun rounds don’t cause permanent tissue damage from energy. 400 ft lbs to 700 ft lbs isn’t going to knock anyone off their feet. That’s only in movies. It’s only from bullets cutting through flesh and damaging a vital organ or artery or severing a spinal cord. Bullet diameter between a 40 and 9 once expanded doesn’t increase your odds much on hitting something vital. What does is shot placement and penetration for which 9, 40, and 357 all do well. 45 really lacks in penetration. Where this really effects 45s performance is when shooting through car doors. That’s why you rarely see police use 45 ACP anymore. That and the loss in capacity.

    @eduardovillalon7496 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I want to make one precision: The 357 Sig it’s a necked down 10mm NOT 40 S&W. It's taller than a 40, and it does match the ballistics of a 357 mag 125gr when properly loaded (or pretty close to it). The biggest problem with the 357 Sig is the misinformation about this cartridge and the manufacturers that have "downloaded" it therefore making it a reduced velocity round and that's where the misinformation comes from. The majority of gun people who falsly claim 357 Sig is only “slightly better” than 9mm deceptively do so by almost always comparing a +p+ 9mm to a reduced velocity 357Sig and then dishonestly bash the 357 Sig when, if they were knowledgeable or intelligent, they'd compare the reduced velocity 357 Sig to a reduced velocity 9mm or even a standard velocity 9mm. Underwood, Buffalo Bore, Double Tap, Cor-Bon and a few others load the 357 Sig to the velocities it was intended as well as SAAMI spec. But then their precious 9mm +p+ wouldn't be able to come close to the ballistics of the 357 Sig. The 357 Sig was also the only caliber that was available for purchase during the shortage because it never went out of stock. The 357 Sig never caught on because the 9mm cult is a literal race to the bottom cult for people who want the cheapest ammo & firearms. According to some of the "gun experts" the best 9mm round is the Federal HST 124gr +P and it's currently selling for 80 cents per round and Underwood 125 grain is selling for 1.04 per round...literally 20 cents per round more for a superior round with better performance and ballistics and 357 Sig is about the same price as a good quality 10mm, 357 mag, 44mag, 45acp etc, and yet people literally cry how expensive 357 Sig is? There's plenty of videos of actual police shootings where the perps live more than not being shot with 9mm unless they are mag dumped by the cops. The 9mm cult also believes stress and the stress of real "combat" shooting won't effect them and they'll do the “perfect shot placement”…C’mon!!
    The 357 Sig and 357 mag also have the best one shot stop record over every other caliber making the 357 Sig an obvious, or should be, choice for self defense.
    Personally I think 357 Sig will stay around (fortunately for us) and people will eventually find out it’s real potential as the best round available for SD.

    40 works really well for 3 things: barrier penetration, long distance handgun shooting, and carbines. In regular defensive shooting it doesn't have a significant advantage over 9mm in average shots to stop or one shot stops (see Greg Ellifritz's stopping power study.) However it performs better through intermediate barriers like drywall and automotive glass, it will still expand and penetrate effectively at least out to 100 yards from a handgun, and it doesn't suffer as much from the uncontrolled expansion of hollow points in a 16 in barrel as 9mm. The Hornaday Critical Duty round in 9mm makes up for many of these issues, though it sacrifices some degree of performance in regular defensive performance. If any of these three criteria are important to a given person then 40 is probably the better choice. I am of the opinion that for most people the 9mm is the best choice, but military and law enforcement would be better served with 40.

    • @markh.6687
      @markh.6687 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Law enforcement used the 40 because 9mm ammo was terrible; with repeated 'failures to stop' due to under-penetration and lack of expansion. The 40 was the answer until the new-gen 9mm ammunition and bullet designs meant officers and agencies didn't have to issue 9mm +P and +P+ ammo, pay more for it, and have training issues with recruits not always firearm-friendly or able to manage the recoil of the amped-up 9mm rounds.
      US Military likely won't go 40 ever due to NATO requirements, although their new rifle broke with the 5.56 and 7.62 standards, but then why don't they go 5.7 x 28 in a handgun instead if no longer worried about ammo interchange with NATO units?

      Just think about it.... 40sw capacity is very close to 9mm and fitz in 9mm size guns. If it wasn't for the recoil of 40 sw and 40 sw being more expensive than 9 mm, 9mm would be obsolete.

    Yankee Marshall, you are correct in your assessment today. Like you, I am a 357 Magnum guy and my auto loader is a SIG P239 in 357 SIG. We all know that the 10 MM was made for the FBI after the Miami shootout when their sissy 9mm and 38 snub nose revolvers failed to take out the suspects. But like you said, the FBI hires a lot of female agents and without height and weight requirements, small male agents. They could not shoot the 10 mm so the 40 was invented. I believe that the 9mm is all the rage due to all of law enforcement going back to it. It's still an inadequate cartridge due to the limits of velocity that can be produced. The 357 sig, I believe, is about as perfect self defense round you can get in an auto loader. It's in reality, a 9 mm magnum. It's a shame that it never caught on with LE and the only reason it did not is due to limp wristed officers complaining about a little recoil and also the cost of the bullets and, as we all know, auto loaders wear out faster with hot cartridges, so it basically comes down to money for police departments. I have always believed that police departments ought to let an officer carry, within reason, what ever gun he wants as long as he can qualify with it.

    When the 10mm came into existence, it was loaded much hotter than it is today.
    So why repopularize a 10mm loading today that offers barely more power than most current .40 S&W loads?
    The more caliber offerings the better as far as I’m concerned.

    I have both, but only carry them while hunting now. Because I have micro 9's and 357 snubbies. Those are too easy to carry in comparison to the artillery piece full size P320. 40 and 357 SIG are for duty-size guns. If we ever start carrying openly at work (could happen), then they'll get more play time. For now they warm the bench.

    For .357 sig, the +P+ 9 mm does offer low end .357 sig ballistics.
    The 40 has more recoil and does not kill so much better than the 9 is the thinking.
    The 10mm pistol has a different function than lesser loadings since people are carrying it for bear defense and HiPoint is now chambering out its blowback carbines series in 10mm. It is a more viable round for defense not only against goblins, but also feral hog and smaller bears.
    I am hesitant to put an optic on a 10 mm pistol and that is one vote against it. I am not sure if the recoil will tolerate it.

    Only reason to worry about it is if you are familiar with say an M-9, So is Beretta making a 10mm 96? Plus a used 96 in .40 could be a good thing. Long as I could get above 89% One shot stopping power in whatever caliber. Compared to a 9mm firearm.

    I just bought a Beretta 96a1. I still need to shoot a few more boxes of shells to get comfortable carrying it. Just my opinion, but I think the steel or aluminum frame guns are better suited for the .40S&W. These new hotness micro guns are a little lite to comfortably control the .40S&W recoil. For the outdoor personal protection I'd take a .40 over a 9mm, but indoors I'd take a 9mm. Just my thoughts.
