That's because members of the Bones Brigade were using them as skateboard shoes. They ruled the style and skater fashion back then. Jordan's were not cheap but they lasted longer than Vans SK8 hi's or Chuck Taylor's and provided more ankle support and as a vert skateboarders that's what the Bones Brigade needed at that time. I bought a pair of Jordan 1 Mids about a year ago for casual wearing. Decided to skate them a couple of months ago & absolutely loved em. They felt & held up better than any other shoe I’ve skated recently.

Hypebeasts are annoying but it's also Nike's fault. They obviously know they could drop som sb dunks as general releases so more people can have them, but they prefer to release in super limited quantities to keep the hype going. Tbh I'm not even that mad at hypebeasts because a lot of them only want to resell them. And if you are lucky enough to buy some dunks and sell them for like 5 times its price I think that's fair.
Bro just buy some reps saves u money and you can buy like 2 pairs for the amount you would pay for a retail dunk

ive got a pretty wide foot and ive just grown accustom to that "break in" period where the shoes kinda hurt my feet. something that ive found actually does help a lot is either using either a heat gun or blow dryer to really warm them up and stretch out faster

Fun fact. High Top Jordan's were SUPER popular in the mid to late 80s with skaters. For many of us older guys, those were the go to shoe.

Back in the late 80's around the time Animal Chin came out you could get two pair of Jordan 1's for $65 at Copeland Sports in the Bay Area. We all used them to skate in.

Jordan 1’s and skating have quite the long history actually! Many skaters from the mid 90s would buy them to skate in! 1994 was the first year they brought them back since 1985 (the year they initally came out) and as sneaker collecting wasn’t big like it is today, the Jordan 1 sneakers would go on sale making them cheap and readily accessible for skaters of the day! People such as Lance Mountain and Tony Hawk skated them in the past to name a few. Nike has even released Jordan 1 SB’s as a callback to this lesser known piece of the history of the Jordan 1. I wore Jordan ‘s back in the mid 80’s when I skated, because vans were almost twice as expensive. I’m the oldest of five brothers. We all skated. To save money on shoes, my dad once bought every single pair, my size, and by brothers sizes as well at a sale from a store called Mervans. Here’s the gist of this story. At one point in my life, there was a closet of 50 pair of original Jordan 1’s in my house! Could you imagine the money those would go for today?!?!? Crazy

Nahh they handle impact terribly. They are definitely the shoe that has given me more heelbruises in my life. Even if you don't skate stuff that big they hurt. But they do look really good and skate great

Being a sneaker head, got some input myself:
The Jordan’s you got are Mids, as apposed to High cut ones. Usually the higher cut ones have a better fit (less bulky), softer leather upper, and a more secure fit. Honestly, try the highs out and see if they feel the same! (I personally have different experiences between each cut)

Tony hawk explained in his sneaker shopping videos that Jordan 1s were so cheap and in surplus that skaters bought them due to the similar fit to VANS Skate Hi. I remember reading somewhere that they were often discounted to $25 or 2 for $40.
Try some Jordan 1 high tops. The leather is better quality than the mids. Of course the Hi's are a bit pricey and also sell out all the time

In 199... something I skated Fila Grant Hill 1s. Lots of different basketball boots were skated before any other shoe on the East Coast, especially jordans because they were really expensive.

I’ve skated for over 20 years and my pairs of Suede Golden Harvest (Wheat colored) Jordan 1 High’s are the best skate shoes I’ve ever had. The suede makes them super flexible and flicks super nice for kickflips. Also a plus that old heads come up to me saying the shoes (probably mostly the color) reminds them of the old Tom Penny/Mark Appleyard days 😂 haha . Gotta love that!
Stop by Guntersville skatepark in Guntersville, Alabama if you’re ever near North Alabama! Or, if you’re ever in Alabama, try to find any skatepark/slab of concrete period. The scene in Alabama is there but with so much lack of support and available skate terrain, it’s hard to keep people motivated to skate, much less, to better their local skate scenes. We have the talent just like anywhere else (Jamie Thomas, James Hardy, Ben Gilley, etc.) we just need exposure to keep people motivated to better their personal skateboard communities!

but forreal, sometimes i wear jordan 1s to skate because a lot of them are easier to get than dunks and they have a similar profile. there are tons of jordan colorways nobody really wants whether because its a mid top or they dont like the colorway. luckily a lot of them are suede too.

I love my vans too, but etnies with footprint insoles is my go to. There super comfy, gripy (not as gripy as vans. Which is what I prefer especially with new tape.) And durable, and with footprint insoles it makes skating an absolute dream!
At 6:42 if you look at the person leaning against the wall next to the windows they look EXACTLY THE SAME
I use my dunks to skate but honestly been wary on using my Jordan 1s for skating, I don’t wanna ruin them to fast 😂 but honestly Basketball shoes and Skateboard shoes sort of have the same function. You want traction when running back and forth playing basketball but also wanna keep your feet on the board when skating, two different reasons yet fit in the same category.
If you want something subtle but AMAZING. Try out the LAST RESORT AB skate shoes. My favorite ones to skate

If you look at old videos of the bones brigade in the 80s ,Tony Hawk etc. They all wore Jordan's. I started skating in 88 and my friends and I all had Jordan 1. Natas Kaupus skated in Ellesse which is kind of what his etnies shoes were similar as

Actually even Tony hawk skated in jordan 1 highs at the beginning of his career because they were so supportive. And when nike tryed to go on the skate market a while later they actually saw that skaters did already wear jordan and dunks (dunks are the shoes you can see at 3.35 min). So because jordan 1 and dunks are so similar they just took the nike dunk which was a basketball shoes designed by peter moore (same as the aj1) and made it a skate shoe.
