I kind of love how the mistake is King to rook 2 (Ka7), and how Moriarty is diagnosed with acute narcissism earlier in the movie by Sherlock, Moriarty's play and character are intrinsically linked - he sees himself as the king, to his own demise. It's like his personality flaws lose him his fortune and also the game of chess. Brilliant screenplay!
Yeah rook blocks at least prolongs mate, but I’m pretty sure the position was dead lost for black even before accepting the queen sac. This was actually based on a real game that was played out differently with black resigning in the end.
And that is why you study your opponent. Moriarty gave him that weakness himself in their first face to face interaction in the movie, and was the pivotal information Sherlock needed to defeat him.
People usually criticize this scene since Moriarty is consistently losing, but that's the whole idea. Sherlock had the upper hand the whole time, both in the chess game and IRL, only Moriarty wasn't aware of the latter. So the game reflects their real-life conflict from Sherlock's perspective, not Moriarty's.
Moriarty said that it's human nature to seek conflict and thus war is inevitable. Donating his stuff to fund that organisation is Sherlock's little jab back for that indicating that humans are also capable of bringing relief from tragedies of conflict and don't have to be fixed by human nature. It also serves to piss him off.
It's more akin to "a little" from how I read it. It's not hilariously, gut punching, gasping for air funny. It's kinda funny. Like how your comment was kinda unnecessary. It wasn't totally pointless, but it didn't actually contribute anything meaningful to the conversation
@wooshifgay462 True, the win % advantage for white is "not much advantage", but that is also part of the point. Chess is a perfect information game, and white has an inherent advantage. Moriarty thinks he has that edge irl and is so confident that he blunders his king. The fact that the writers use said opening and response is most likely just because they hired a consultant just to come up with a set of moves to use.
@@Davo5673 I don't think it was a mistake. Moriarty and Holmes both knew that by moving the queen Holmes would have to move the king and it had only one move to make. So essentially was saying "I'm taking the pawn after you move your king". It'd be the kind of assumption you'd find upon such "super geniuses"
@@JonMaurer-e8s The "mistake" is that the movie skips a couple moves and the channel is so careless that they don't even have Sherlock and Moriarty moving the correct color pieces in the graphic, so would have to also make the mistake of not having a pawn on said square. Of course, the movie also skips whatever Moriarty's last move was, but his queen takes knight pawn also makes no real sense due to the fact that he already knows he is mate in 1. A last move check that has nothing to follow it up when you are mate in 1 is the action of either an idiot that can't read the board or a petulant child. It added nothing to the scene, since even Sherlock doesn't bother letting him say another random move before announcing the mate in 1.
@@qu33nmovesWith all of the Canon easter eggs in this I had almost expected Holmes to add a price tag to the notebook he identified from sight. Maybe “half a crown” like the price of the expensive stationary from “Scandal In Bohemia” or something. 😅

What did you expect….. it’s Guy Ritchie
How do you “kind of “ love something?

moriarty was too focused on having taken Sherlock's queen, that he didn't realize how weak his king was
Moriarty was winning 😂 sherlock met his match until Watson interfered
@MrDumdumkilla might need to rewatch the scene pal. Holmes was ready to yeet the both of the ledge before Watson rocked up.
Can't believe he played the good scientist role in Chernobyl
The guy is acting royalty; he is as talented and diverse as his father, Richard Harris was.
He can ppay both heroes and villains, as well as strong and low confident men with such believability. Love him.
faaaaaaak dude! Thanks for pointing that out :D
Harris has such a talent to potray intelligent characters
First movie I saw him in was Doctor Ashford in Resident Evil Apocalypse lol.
Such genius actor with every face expression to steal the limelight.
Be it Chernobyl, The Terror.. each is materpiece
I happy you mentioned The Terror. I feel like that show is very underrated.
@jamesbuff3619 season 1 of the terror is one of my all time favourite shows and wish it got the recognition it deserves
This was based on an actual game played by Larson and Petrosian. They just altered the first move, the colors and when this position was reached.
Guy Ritchie did a phenomenal job on this movie!
My brother showed me the gentlemen. Felt like sherlock holmes again. ❤
@@BlackDiamond2718 that’s one of my all time favorites as well.
Shame he won't come back for the third one.
@@scsutton1 "DAMN! He aint gonna be in sherlock holmes 3."
It’s kinda funny how they’ll fund the widows and orphans from war with the money they confiscated
That's the stinger; the irony. Digging the dagger further into his narcissistic ego.
“Kind of funny”? Can’t make a decision?

Holmes saw mate in 43 moves
Nice except for one mistake: Moriarty was playing the white pieces, Holmes was playing the black pieces
Yep
My thoughts exactly at the beginning of this video
That makes a little sense, white starts with the advantage.

Gothamchess made a recap on this game. It was a actual game played Between two grandmasters.
“The Terror” is good too
I want part 3 of this movie
"Too much of a good thing...is bad"
Yes
Be careful what you fish for.
wekll moriarty is the eventual genius centuries later......especially now
Thank you for making this video ❣️
Great battle 👏 👌 👍
They are very gifted people in this era.
This is how you write chess. Not like Code Geass.
1:14 That bgm , subtle but strong.
What’s that?
Excellent scene of game of minds!
Moriarty started white in this game
I like the alternative universe of you that you, Professor, have blonde hair.
When queen took knight pawn.... it didn't show on the board that the queen took a pawn...
That move wasn't available to the queen. So at the end the queen makes a second move out of sequence.
@@Davo5673 I don't think it was a mistake. Moriarty and Holmes both knew that by moving the queen Holmes would have to move the king and it had only one move to make. So essentially was saying "I'm taking the pawn after you move your king".

“Queen taken knight pawn” where’s the pawn? Is it just me or there’s NO PAWN ON THAT SQUARE??? 😓😓🫥🫥🫥🫥
i thought count dankula was in a movie for a sec their
How did the Queen get to b2?
For some reason they didn’t include the moves qb3 kh8 in the movie. Remember Holmes has the black pieces

Moriarty was right
This isn't the game that was played.
Any chance for a cup of tea! 👨🏻
I beat em both
Moriarity is not a particularly good chess player.
This was a recreation of a real match between two grandmasters.
