Just wanted to say that this band has been the unchallenged favorite for my toddler. He’s only two and is very fickle about if he’ll even tolerate the Wiggles, Sesame Street, Daniel Tiger, Super Simple Songs, etc etc and gets easily bored with other “adult” music (Led Zepplin is up there but still hit or miss with him), but this band-something about it just makes him so happy, even when he’s having a tantrum. He bounces and punches the air when he’s listening to this video and has done so for about a year. So congrats, you have the approval of the world’s pickiest music critic.

From 10:00 - 11:00 is the most soulful heart-rending performance I've ever seen. If he's faking it then he needs an Oscar tied to a Grammy. This guy is a force of nature. I hear a lot of comparisons to Otis Redding and Al green. He has a similar voice, and it's that damn good. Not to mention these aren't covers. These are their original songs that make you want to play them again again. I'm so happy I found this.
I MADE AN TH-cam ACCOUNT JUST BECAUSE I WANTED I WRITTEN AS A COMMENT THAT THIS MAN HAS BEEN BLESSED WITH THE STRONGEST VOICE SINCE MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. LORD HAVE MERCY UPON ME THANK YOU FOR THIS WONDERFUL MUSIC MAY YOU HAVE YEARS TO COME OF JOY

I'm without words. I had never heard of St. Paul and The Broken Bones until today. My laptop randomly played this NPR set. This is amazing. Otis Redding and some of the other greats would be pleased. For those people that say there is no more great music...I say "hogwash!" You just have to know where to find it or by blessed by the TH-cam randomizer. LOL
I've been telling my friends and family that for years. There's all kinds of good music, if you're willing to find it. If you just listen to the radio in the car, forget it. That's how it was when I was growing up. Radio, vinyl, 8-tracks - and finally the relative freedom of cassettes. But only real music fans played music on multiple formats. Most people weren't rocking reel-to-reels and studio speakers. There was good music, but we all knew the same good music. We all heard the same terrible music, too. We don't have to suffer bad music any more! Find what you like on the internet, it's all out there. Peace and good music to you, Isaiah Merriweather.
They’re good friends, so it could happen! Saw the two bands together in Tuscaloosa @ The Bama Theatre.....I thought the plaster was coming off the ceiling that night! 😎
to the people saying that other people can sing like him, there are other people that can sing as well, but at 10:15-11:00 he lets something out that I haven't heard anyone do before. plus, I think the songwriting is fantastic beyond just his voice.
james brown and marvin gaye does that and Otis redding..Its derived really from gospel wails. This guy is impressive but it's not necessarily unique vocal stylings. people are just not use to hearing its from a white guy. It's kind of like the black singer from bloc party. People arent use to hearing a black guy sing in that style of rock.
yeah, i keep hearing that. i dont know where to look for those gospel wails, because I'd be into it if I could find them. I was listening to bloc party yesterday again, man they're fuckin' great.
I've never seen such a passionate, emotional performance by a vocalist from my generation. I'm an early 80's baby. Stuff like this doesn't exist anymore and it's sad. This dude genuinely was feeling every ounce of what's coming out of his mouth and whoever said he's faking it, or imitating is ignorant and is just envious of what they can never do. Music has been around since before Christ, so musicians are obviously going to be influenced by other musicians. Music wouldn't exist as a major in college if this wasn't so. Amazing performance. WOW!
With as many people that have started watching Tiny Desk concerts during the COVID pandemic...I really with NPR would re-release some of these older concerts, bring them back to the top of the queue, and get them some more exposure!
All I know is that during that song, something got in my eyes, which resulted in my rubbing them, and as a result, water fell out of them. Thats my story, and im sticking to it!
MY GOD! Anyone say, “goosebumps from head to toe”?! NEVER expected that voice and soul coming from that man. Another reason why I love NPR Tiny Desk... I will absolutely see these guys if they are ever within 500 miles! SING it... I feel GOD!!! WooHOO!
I think I'm the reason for a few thousand of the 5.2 million views of this video! I come back to it often when I need some humanity put back into my life.
10:15-10:30 is the most emotional combination of musical accompaniment and vocals I think I have ever heard. Right after “down on my knees”.... the response to that call right after gives me chills and brought me to tears the first five times I watched this. Holy freakin soul music right here, boy.
Talent is not an ethnic or color, or a family thing to prove who has it, some have it, some don't, so I just appreciate it no matter who has the God-given Gift.!! Sing it and I will listen again and again. Good Luck Kids on your career!!
Last night they played the Hollywood Bowl Fest. Dude came off stage into crowd for some electric performanceship. He had a Black woman fall out. The voice sounds like a mix of Terrence Trent Darby and Otis Redding. Excellent job from these Alabama lads. A pleasant surprise.
You may think that he is an imitation; you may even call him a thief; but there is no denying that what spilled on that tiny desk was not only his sweat, but his soul. Someone whose heart is not deeply and wholly invested in every single moment of that song doesn't have an ice cube's chance in hell of delivering anything even approaching that level of gut-wrenching, heart-pouding, tear-jerking exposition of soul. These are facts.
I saw this band open for John Mayer in Tuscaloosa, he came out and blew everyone away with those pipes, my girlfriend and I were speechless, an amazing bamd with an amazing talent from my home town
Just found this performance, years later... and I can tell you that it first gave me chills; then made me get up outta my chair/catching the holy ghost and left me sitting in a puddle of tears, sobbing uncontrollably, hands to the sky. YES, LAWD, I hear you!!!
This guy (the lead) is my spirit human. Thanks for sharing NPR your tiny desk concerts have helped me make it through some tough times at MY tiny desk. Much love.
From the first note and the gold shoes, I loved it! They better get it! I guessed they were from the South "Is it hot? Naw man we from Alabama!" lol love it, didnt want it to end.
I've been listening to this concert since it was on TH-cam. But everytime, when they play broken bones and pocket change, I just need to close my eyes and fully absorb the soul this band has to offer. Goosebumps, truly goosebumps.
I love his voice, his showmanship, and the sound the band comes up with. Powerful sound of southern soul. I hope people buy their album and explore the other artists they were influenced by.
Npr tiny music desk is the best live music show I know. I've found so much amazing music through this show, and the intimacy of these sets are unparalleled. Just amazing
The acoustics of the Tiny Desk recordings are phenomenal and deserve a shout-out. Across several musicians I have compared the Tiny Desk acoustics/recordings are quite superior to their recording studio counterparts.
I can't stop watching this video! It's been on repeat for days now. His voice is outta this world and so soulful and heart wrenching. I love everything about this performance. Their southern charm and his drawl is infectious and genuinely warm. I am so mesmerized by his voice and showmanship especially when he breaks down on his knees during Broken Bones & Pocket Change. So enchanting!
Saw St Paul and the Broken Bones last night at The Hollywood Bowl and was blown away!!! WOW! So awesome so much soul and showmanship!!! Instant fan!!!! Such a joy to find new and awesome talent:)!!!

Derangedteddy .. Boom 💥 .. drops the mic’
@DonnyMcJonny you can feel his spirit in every note he sings. He just sings straight from the soul and you can feel it.
very well written comment
much like Stevie Ray Vaughn in his realm.

I saw this band open for John Mayer in Tuscaloosa, he came out and blew everyone away with those pipes, my girlfriend and I were speechless, an amazing bamd with an amazing talent from my home town
Life long soul and blues fan . This broke me. Never seen anything this good.
I'm always impressed by the sound quality of TDC - it's like Paul is standing right next to me. Awesome!!
Yes! I'm surprised they get sound this good from such a small room! I can't hear much reverb at all.
Saw them live this summer. Two hours of goosebumps I'm not even kidding.
Love the gold shoes! What a voice, a white Otis
"nah man we from Alabama" charmed me right off my feet
Meccabullock happy to say 2 years after you commented this I was the 300th person to like your comment
Soul music will always be in style, in my humble opinion, dang these guys are amazing!
When he said "sad song", I thought it was gonna be a "sad song", not a "crush your soul into a million little pieces song"... aww shit.
I love his voice, his showmanship, and the sound the band comes up with. Powerful sound of southern soul. I hope people buy their album and explore the other artists they were influenced by.
Here I am years later and can't get enough
I saw them in concert recently and let me tell you it was ELECTRIC! Man you could feel the energy in that room. Wow. Just wonderful. Good stuff.
STILL MY FAVORITE TINY DESK, EVER. I keep comin' back!
Still listening and loving this. 2022.
I just love NPR Tiny desks concerts
Going on 7 years since finding them, and still everyday watch this !
Paul Janeaway has a God given voice and was born with soul. He's amazing talent and I've seen him four times. Phenomenal band
Paul is not a guy going through the motions! Rarely do you see someone this into their work. I am in awe of your talent and passion!
Tiny desk is where I come to rest my heavy head and repose my unsettled and inconstant soul.
"I populated half the city, child
But I still can't find no love
Somebody has to heal me, lord
"
one of my favorite lyrics of all time
Otis lives!! and every thing in between.... Great Art!! Great Soul!!! Thank you guys for what you do!!!!!
I’m so sad I only learned about this band this week, the vibes this guy gives off is incredible really pouring his soul into it
