    Has stood the test of time and suits everything.
    I still think it sounds best unmuffled.
    Beautiful open sound.

    What's good enough for Karen Carpenter, Hal Blaine, Joe Morello, Nate Smith, etc. is good enough for me! :-) Both 5 and 6.5's are great! Thanks, Mike...good playing! Cheers, Mike. **Edit** I think Joe Morello and Hal Blaine might have rocked a Supra COB.

    Thank you Mike for the video. It demonstrates the Supraphonic's versatility and as to why it's legendary.

    This was the first drum my parents bought for me in 5th grade back in 1988. I didn’t know what I had at the time - I assumed it was a cheap steel student drum. I stopped playing after high school and it sat in my mom’s damp basement for 20 years. I started playing again recently, and when she moved, I cleaned out my old stuff, and lo and behold, there was a Supraphonic! And I had just purchased a used 6.5x14 a few weeks earlier! The hoops and all of the lug casing mounting screws are hopelessly rusted and the chrome is flaked and pitted. I think I’m going to trick it out: grind and buff the chrome a la Alex Van Halen’s deeper Supra, get brass tube lugs and brass plated die-cast hoops and throw-off.

    my mom bought me a drum set for high school graduation in the 80s. didnt know much about drums at the time, all my friends had new pearl export or tama superstar drums, new and shiny! i wad a bit embarrassed by my second hand beater kit. but it SOUNDED fantastic. turned out to be a late 60's or early seventies ludwig kit with a 5 1/2 supraphonic! ive ownef a few other kits, some good, some just ok, but i always played the superphonic with them, still using it 34 years later. still have the original kit in my basement, its my practice kit. finally after wanting one for ever i bought a new 6 1/2 supraphonic this year. two classics. great vid mike, i was digging the md podcast with Mike johnston too.

    I love this video series! Thanks Mike and please continue sharing your drums with us. I have a 70's vintage of this same drum. My OCD has me wanting to give yours a good polishing! :)

    Best all-around snare drum ever made. The only downside to it is the p85 throw off. I replaced mine with the trick throw off.

    Sounds awesome. Love the red snare holders too like the dunnett style. Def going to look into some of those.
    One of my favourite snares I got many years back when they came out is a mapex retro sonic walnut. Just wondering your thoughts if you ever reviewed one or remember it and also if you could do a video on one if you come across it. I find it to be such a versatile drum and it has killer crack in that d-d# batter g-g# reso but I’d love to hear your tuning range style applied to that drum. Some how you always find like 20 tunings instead of the usual 3 ha haaa. Thanks bro have a good one and keep em coming.

    How about a side by side comparison with a black beauty ano/or the Stewart Copeland signature snare as I think it sounds like a supra?Thanks, enjoyed this video very much!

    • @MikeDawsonDrums
      @MikeDawsonDrums  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That would be fun! I'd have to track down one of each though... ;)

    Love the Supraphonic look-see, but I hear audio artifacts whenever you breathe in. Maybe it's a bit-rate issue due to the video encoding? The breaths are high-frequencies, so the kinda liquidy sounding artifacts may also show up in the high-freq drum sounds.

    • @MikeDawsonDrums
      @MikeDawsonDrums  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tony Palermo good ears! The problem was my lavalier mic was on the fritz so I had to denoise the heck out of it.

    Great stuff. Thank you! What sort of tension do you have on the bottom head^ Thanks.

    • @MikeDawsonDrums
      @MikeDawsonDrums  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The bottom head is always very tight. I aim for the note G.

    Do you have a Keplinger, and have you done a video on that snare?? I have a couple of old Leedy's I should send you to do a critique for your channel on.

    What would be the closest snare to these, in other brands ?

    • @MikeDawsonDrums
      @MikeDawsonDrums  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would need to be a seamless aluminum shell. Q Drums has one, Dunnett has one. Drumfactorydirect.com has one. Not sure there are too many others. Most are rolled shells.

    It’s pronounced Grow-Gain ribbon, as in grow your vocabulary. If you say Gros-Gain the people at the fabric store will know what you mean but will laugh at you when you leave.
