Thanks a lot for the podcast! I've always been interested in Supraphonics. As a child, looking at B/W posters of some of the best bands in the world... - the drummers playing Ludwig Supraphonics... I had a dream. Now I've got LM 400 from the 60s and LM 402 from 70s. Great drums!!!

This is the kind of stuff that TH-cam was made for
You’d never find anything like this if there was no Internet and eventually a lot of historical stuff that is of genuine interest to many of us would just get lost or watered down in time…
    Good Work you Guys 👍

True. Back in the old days before the internet you would have to go to a seminar like in New York or some major city. Maybe at a music college too .

Every drummer should be listening to these episodes great work! Just my personal opinion but I think the Supra you buy today sounds just as great as they ever did.

The Supraphonic made me stop buying more snare drums because I have discovered ways to manipulate it to sound different so there’s no real need to get another snare when I can get a similar sound from the same drum

One of the great advantages is that if the Supraphonic gets stolen or somehow destroyed maybe in a house fire, it’s easy to replace and find another one. A drum for life

Thanks great episode Bart and ULI ! Acrolites are a good alternative to Superphonics in sound , design and affordability.

I have three Ludwig snare drums: early 80's 5 x 14" Acrolite 'Black Galaxy', late 1970's 5 x 14" Supersensitive, and Venus 'Carl Palmer Signature' 3.7 x 14". All three good drums but my favorite is the Carl Palmer Signature model. That drum is very versatile wide tuning range from high 'crack' to tuned down lower and killer rimshots. Did have a 6 1/2 x 14" Classic maple shell some years ago which I sold (to my regret). Can't go too wrong with Ludwig drums. The Supraphonic certainly is an iconic snare drum.

I've always wanted one of the Black Galaxy Acrolites - they are such cool drums. I agree, you can't go wrong with a Ludwig snare, especially a Supra!

I just recently sold mine /: it’s been tough.

I asked Ludwig to bring back the 6.5x14 black galaxy blackrolite.
Offer with the choice of imperial lugs and a muffler.
    Gosh, I really want one.

I had an mid-70s Supraphonic and a late 50s COB (part of a 4-piece black galaxy set) which not only sounded so much better (not quality related but my preference for a brass shell) but the chroming was much higher quality. I'm surprised you guys didn't mention that. The mid-seventies lowering of quality by US companies in general (including cars) not coincidentally when quality Japanese imports started to make inroads in the US and drove "patriotic" Americans crazy, but, I can remember American car and drum companies such as Ludwig dropping quality way before the Japanese companies were considered to have taken over.

Thats interesting, I wasn't aware of that drop in quality for cars and drums. It is interesting how the national/global supply chain and "standards" can effect the drum brands. Thank you for listening!

So are the current Supraphonics made in North Carolina? Not that locations matters. Just curious.

Good question - I can't say for sure. I would ask on one of the Facebook groups
