My grandfather used to collect mechanical clocks. After both he and my grandmother passed, his clocks were moved to my house. He had a grandfather clock that he built (with some help from my dad) from a kit. We finally got it cleaned and serviced a year ago and now every time I hear it chime I think of my grandpa.

Found one almost identical at a thrift shop while on vacation. It was not running but I grabbed it for $100. Thank goodness a local gentleman here loves them as much as I do and he set it up for me. I love changing the chimes melody each time I wind it.

I recently inherited my grandmothers Howard Miller grandfather clock.
When I first put it in my new home it was off by 20 minutes per day. Since I was an internet savvy guy I searched how to correct this issue and the world wide web only told me to turn the small nut at the bottom of the pendulum to correct by 1 minute per 360 degree turn! I was at a loss. Clearly I couldn't do 20 full turns!
Then I found the amazing instruction guide that came with the clock. It turned out you have to raise or lower the pendulum itself for major time corrections. I literally just found out about this today, but I'm currently dialing in the timing. I went from 20 minutes ahead per day to 10 behind. With the great guide printed 40 years ago by Howard Miller I'm sniping in on very accurate times.

We just inherited a Howard Miller grandfather clock, same exact model. This one had been stored for about 10 years or more. We were pleasantly surprised to find that it is working perfectly fine. After several moves from multiple storage units and across the country, we weren't expecting that. I appreciate your video. You've helped me understand this quite a bit more.

Thanks for the video. I've always wanted a grandfather clock ever since I was a kid and fell in love with theirs. I was picking out a couch for my room this past weekend when I saw a Howard Miller grandfather clock and had to have it. It's more of a modern looking clock which suits me well. It only has the Westminster chime and no moon phase and the weights drop at different rates. Also an LED that lights the face , reflects down and lights the weights and pendulum some what. I came looking for some insight on the chime settings, and although settings are different you video did help some. I've got the night time silence and am making sure I'm not 12 hours off. Well that was probably more than you needed to know but it's nice to see others are still fans of grandfather clocks, have a good one.

Thank you for the video, we recently moved our clock and the chimes were not working, even thought the switch was set to chime....while watching your video I saw where the weights were different weights, which I was unaware of....I checked the weights and they were labeled on the bottom, I had the left and right weights switched. I changed them to the correct position and "presto" the clock is chiming again! Thank you!!

I was gifted a 70s Emperor Grandfather Clock by my grandmother. Like your mantle clock, it was originally a kit. I recently had to have to movement rebuilt on it, but now it's working perfectly. It has the most beautiful chimes and will always remind me of my grandmother even after she is no longer with us.

I gave a like because of your story! I personally have the same story I wanted one from a very young age, and I finally got one at 60 years old. Funny thing almost the same clock! One note on your video! You talk about WD40! You are absolutely correct. WD40 Is just about the worse thing you can do to a mechanical clock first it is not lubricant. I can't tell you how many old clock I have personally repaired not because the clock needed anything but because someone sprayed it with WD40.

Great summary. The great thing about these clocks is if you move the hands the "wrong way" it should self-correct. If worse comes to worst you can always physically remove the hands and reset them to the time of the clock. There are TH-cam videos that show you how to do this. Do not fear the mechanical movements!

I really enjoyed your video, and even though I am experienced with clocks, your explanations are very good and I appreciate other peoples perspectives. It has been my experience that the heaviest weights usually go on the chime train, and the time (going) train will have the lightest weight. Did you have instructions that came with this clock that directed you to locate them where you did? I'd be interested in knowing. I also enjoy clocks where the weights are suspended by cables with a pulley. I like the smoothness of winding, as opposed to the chains. I also like the lighter color of the clock you have. Unless you have a victorian home, the lighter color more matches the furnishings of today.

I remember my parents purchasing a similar clock in 1990 with a slightly different case, glass center on the pendulum. It has the same three chimes, from my understanding now, it was rare or short lived but it has a mode where every hour it changes the chime. It runs through all three chimes one hour of each and then repeats. The furniture store that delivered hooked it to the wall with an ell bracket to the top of the clock and into a stud. We had a problem with it once and took the movement out and sent it to Howard Miller. The charged us for a cleaning but my Dad notice that it appeared to have no plates sandwiching the movement together so we assume they fixed a problem at no charge and we were charged for cleaning. They were really good and gave us instructions on how to remove and pack it. Truly a great experience. It was a replacement a smaller possibly "grandmother" Set Thomas clock that a local clock guy messed up and it would never chime right so we moved it to the upstairs family room putting the new clock in it's place in the living room.
Smart move with the LED bulb as my parents never use the light bulb in their clock, which did have a mirror in the back, as the heat tends to effect the time keeping. Keep in mind that expansion and contraction of the pendulum will change the length.

Great stuff! With all the variations of Howard Miller clocks it seems like I’ve never seen two clocks which were exactly alike. I was never sure what features, style and colors I would eventually choose but then this one happened to be available for a good deal and, after having it in the house for just a little while, I decided it was perfect.

My parents bought one of these in 1986. Never thought much about it, found the chimes annoying. We ended up with it and eventually it stopped working. When we went to start it up one day, we cranked the weights up and the hour gong cable snapped and the clock just sat in the living room for a few more year. We recently had our floors redone and the installer moved the clock and all of a sudden it started working again (except for the hour gong). Turns out we have a repair place right in our town. Cost about $150 to get it fixed and running and now we are fascinated by it. I don't even hear the chimes once I fall asleep.
Two items of interest. The reapair man said "in the not too distant future" we are going to have to have the movement replaced. He says this costs about $1500. I guess considering a complete lack of maintenance and the age that would make sense. As far as setting the time goes he said you can move the minute hand in either direction without a problem. The only thing is if you move it forward, you have to let the music and the gongs play.

Great video Greg. Congratulations on your first of many to come clocks. There is one thing that you might remember is that the weight on the right needs to be the heavier one due to it having to run the chiming train. It does more work than the time train or the gong train. The love of clocks does Not stop at one! I have many and it is still not enough. Peggy, the center weight keeps the “time” pendulum moving, the left weight is the “hour” chime and the right weight is the melody chime. So if the chimes are turned off, they won’t really move - just the center one will move.

Fascinating video, thanks for posting. I’ve just started to get interested in chiming clocks. There’s something calming about them when they chime or even when you hear them tick. It takes me back to a time when I was lucky enough to remember a more gentle, peaceful time. I am fortunate to have seen a grandfather clock in a house that also had a black-leaded, cast iron range fireplace still in everyday use. The old lady slept in a little bed that was set into the wall of the same room, with a curtain to hide it. My auntie had a chiming mantel clock that I used to love hearing when it chimed and the tick tock was always in the background. They bring a little calming influence to these more stressful times.

It seems like you could adjust the hour hand to correct this. I know that with my other mechanical mantle clock it’s possible to gently nudge the hand to the right place. But I haven’t tried it on a Howard Miller clock.
If you’re willing to have it professionally serviced I’m sure they could easily fix the hand position. It might be worthwhile simply because you may have no idea when it was last given a good cleaning and lubrication service. It’ll be in top-top shape.

    • @charlesrussell9312

If you haven't corrected it, you can try to move the hour hand to the right hour. Some hour hands are friction fit. Otherwise, you'll need to remove the hands and rest them. There are videos on you tube on how to do this.

We have a 1980 Howard Miller grandfather clock. For the past month the minute hand will not go past the numeral 2 and also numeral 8....so aggravating. This has happened in the past and we just moved the minute hand backwards a tiny bit, and then it would go forward correctly and not happen again for a few years....and the "fix" always worked. Just recently tho we do the same, but it will stop later when it gets to numeral 8 or again to numeral 2 spot. We had it cleaned ,etc maybe 5 yrs ago. Anyone had this happen? It is in a very prominent/convenient spot and do depend on it for a quick glance of time all during the day...did not realize how often I glance at it for the time!!

*Grandfather* - *Grandmother* - *Grandaughter* but no *Grandson* ?? Like the lights illuminating the pendulum and weights. Years ago when I bought a Ridgeway Grandmother clock at a garage sale, I.nstalled a night light bulb above the pendulum. Thought my idea was original. Nope. The light also nicely gently lights the dark entrywayvhere the clock stood.
Wish that our Howard Miller Winterhalder grandfather from Goodwill had the nighttime chime silencer. I placed two nightlight bulbs well above the movement to illuminate the mechanism which can be seen through side windows. A third bulb illuminates the pendulum and weights.

Is that a heat vent next to the clock?

    • @GoodTimekeeper

It’s the cold air return. It doesn’t blow hot air at the clock.

@@GoodTimekeeper Greg, a cold air return is a higher dust area. Over three or four years this makes a difference, even with a sealed case because the cases aren't air tight. Not trying to give you a hard time, I really enjoy your presentations and I do have a HM tower clock also. I was very careful where I placed it.

@@friggindbag I'm sorry you didn't see it as constructive. I specifically said that I was not trying to give him a hard time and I really enjoyed his presentations. That's "not saying something nice", that IS saying something nice. I have HM clock and dust does accumulate in the case. An intake vent is part of the air circulation system and that means dust in the room is also drawn next to the clock.
I have several Casio watches that I purchased after watching Greg's reviews, in fact it was Greg that first got me interested in the Casio brand. Trolling? What are you talking about? My grandfather? I'm in my mid seventies. Please sir, don't create problems where they don't exist.

How do you reverse 1 hour of time

    • @GoodTimekeeper
      @GoodTimekeeper  ปีที่แล้ว

I adjusted for the switch from Daylight Saving Time by reaching in and stopping the pendulum. Then I set a one-hour timer on my watch and, when it ended, I reached in and started the pendulum again. My understanding is that it’s okay to move the time ahead by pushing the minute hand ahead but it’s not okay to push the minute hand backwards.

Great video Greg. I was just watching your MTG-M900 video and you said you could maybe return to the black version of the watch in a few years - it's been 2 years since you recorded, do you think you'll get chance to let us see how the black coating has held up, and give us all an update on reliability and how you've found the watch since you purchased it? Thanks!

Besides floor clocks and long case Clocks they sometimes called them haul clocks. Have you ever heard of it called that? Because some people put their grandfather clocks in hallways as well so they call hall clocks sometimes too. But you have a nice one right there and I don’t think they look good in hallways I think living rooms or Dan’s or maybe dining rooms yes they look good in there of course

I like all types of watches mechanical the only quartz I have is my 40+-year-old Pioneer and Geneve plus some new G-Shocks. G-shock is probably as far as I would go with Quartz simply because their tanks and they fit well into my rough bush hiking photography I do.
Reson you don't get many views on your mechanical videos is not because your produce bad content just that your audience is G-Shock focused, so don't be disheartened by low views your just gonna have to build both types of enthused.
PS It just takes me forever to get through my sub list.
