My dentist in the 1970s when I was about 6 had a grandfather clock in his office. It's the SOUND. Still remember it at 52. These have the value of memory.
I have a Ridgeway and a Kieninger tall case clock. The Ridgeway is a grandmother (Westminster) and the Kieninger is a triple chime Grandfather. I picked them both up at an Antique shop when I went to College. I have done some work on both clocks to get them running in top shape. The Kieninger was missing a gear for the moon phase, had the wrong size chains on it causing the weights to slip, and the Ridgeway needed the snail adjusted (my fault for leaving the chain in the door when pulling weights, be careful!). I love both clocks. The movements on them have little to no wear. I got really lucky finding them when and where I did. If anyone is thinking about getting a tall case clock, I can say you will love it. Never known anyone to regret the purchase. I can advise getting familiar with the mechanics of the movements, as even one that runs perfect will need oiling. It is not nearly as complicated as it seems for those who are mechanically minded to repair/ maintain one. Finding parts can be the hardest part. 👍
I purchased a German grandfather as a 40th birthday present to myself, The main attributes I wanted was, The triple chime, Moon Dial, Roman Numerals and lighting in the cabinet. Mine even has the secret compartment underneath the Pendulum too!
And there's nothing like the deep, rich sound that comes from them. I have one huge one so far and many mantle ones. They are certainly a conversation piece. (I don't have them all going off together; I silence all but one mantle and the exquisite grandfather one.)
@@flowergirlabc123 oh, I also have a pretty big clock collection. Three grandfather clocks and three mantles. One time I had a friend come over. He also has a pretty sizable collection. Well, we decided not to silence them. Every 15 minutes our ears would get serenaded.
Thanks for this video! We have here at home a beautiful Hermle, long case with chains. I bought it new in 2020 and now I can’t imagine my house without one. The chimes are warm and cozy. We live in Lima Peru by the way
My Grandfather was a clock collector and amateur clocksmith. I inherited only one of his many clocks, an ornate mantel clock. Since then, I scored 4 wall clocks at Goodwill and a grandfather clock from the dump. Who would take a clock to the dump???😢 It's missing the pendulum and two weights that I've been watching for on Ebay. Sadly, when my mother died last month, my sister inherited the German grandfather clock my grandfather left her. I work on my wall clocks and have been able to get them to work and chime in sequence with the help of TH-cam videos. It's a fun and interesting hobby.
I didn’t know that moon phase grandfather clocks existed, I thought that was a thing you could only find on fancy watches. I wish there was a neo gothic one with a cuckoo bird and a moon phase as that would be the perfect grandfather clock for me. I understand the argument of particle board being more resistant to warping but in a super humid hot climate like Florida the stuff just doesn’t last as long as real wood. I’ve seen particle board returning to sawdust so many times. Like maybe they could make it out of bamboo as it’s very warp resistant and can’t crumble to dust so easily. :)
I'm jealous. Our two cable-driven grandfather clocks came from Goodwill a year apart. First Trend and later a bigger Howard-Miller. First was a chain-driven Ridgeway grandmother from a garage sale years earlier. Grandfathers have fake temperature-compensating pendulums. I.nstalled a night light bulb in each clock to illuminate the weights, chains and pendulum and our dark entryway not knowing other clocks hadights!

I have a Ridgeway 1988 , 3 weight cable driven system grandfather clock I bought, I did everything correct but after I raised the rollers and weights . I took weights off, bagged them in socks. and started to tie together the 3 pulley wheels and I noticed 2 of the 3 pulleys were flipped outside of the interior of the cable. How do you put them back inside as they are hanging onto the cable but not inside the cable. The cable winding reels have plastic covering inside the mechanism. but I need to get the two rollers flipped back so I can add the weights back. It looks tricky sir. Can you help

I would so love a Grandfather clock, however, i can't afford one, the floors aren't very straight, the house is only small and the price as well as the up keep is well more than i could afford. It however doesn't stop me from loving these time pieces, the very best i can afford is a Herlme mantle clock which i will have in a few days time, to all people who own such beautiful grandfather clocks i can only admire you. 🎶🎶🎶.
I was surprised to see the current German manufacturers are using veneered chipboard in the new clocks. I'm not sure what the price differential is for newly made clocks, but you can find old antique longcase clocks at auction houses made with solid wood that might be roughly similarly priced, as sadly few people these days want genuine well-made antiques (or maybe don't have room for them). But they are all lovely well-made clocks. Having said that, I find the electronic cuckoo clocks slightly odd!
As mentioned in the video, these models that have chipboard can last a very long time and stop the clock from warping or splitting from humidity or changes in temperature. Usually the front of the clock is solid, and it's just the sides or back that are chipboard. One thing to note about auction clocks is that you'll most likely need to get them serviced which can be quite expensive (in excess of $800 AUD), and there's no guarantee that the movement is in good condition, or if the clock had been exposed to the elements in some way. For this reason alone we no longer purchase clocks from customer. If purchasing a used clock from an auction house, you want to make sure you can get the service history for the clock, and ensure it's in working order. If not, then walk away.

You will need to get a movement make and number which also generally has the pendulum length. Might be easiest to engage a clockmaker to assist you with this
Help! 😭❓💔Since moving our clock 10 feet away on hard floors, we haven't been able to get it to work. Spent soooo much time and much frustration. We were SUPER careful and did it right. The pendulum won't work for long before it stops. We finally got it levelled yet...... Any suggestions? We so miss our beautiful clock. 😢 It is a Sligh clock.

Yes, you're correct in spotting the laminated composite timber. This is intentional for the main "box" structure of the case as it is less prone to warping, shrinking or expanding with humidity and temperature changes. It also ensures the case remains durable and long lasting. Solid timber is used for the decorative part of the case, the mouldings that create the shape at the top, the base, the doors, side doors, around the glass etc. These clocks are exceptional quality and built to last.
Grand father clocks or to use the proper terminology never started with a chiming movements. I was late in there history that this came into being. you should also include the dial as well as the movement and case, the dial plays an impotent part as many makers would have their name on the dial which gives people information to when the clock was made and where. What you are advertising are nothing like the really old antique English grandfather (longcase clock) What you are showing is modern crap and I can assure you none of what you have will still be working in 200 years time, you will be lucky if they last 50 years most will be worn beyond repair.

none of my grandfather clocks have anything but a bell or gong, but then they are from the 1700s.
