Shanghai is my hometown, and I used to stroll down Nanjing Road, having dim sum in the No. 1 Food Store (上海食品公司）or picking up special snacks, such as sticky rice tuan (糯米团）, in many of the front stores along the way. But, it's a tourist trap now, mainly domestic travelers. It's so crowded, one can hardly walk, let alone stroll leisurely. If you want to buy anything, you have to stand in a long line. Shanghai natives usually avoid East Nanjing Road (walking street), and they go to Huaihai Road, or West Nanjing Road instead. If you are a laowai (foreign) tourist, you should avoid it, as the locals do.
