One of my favorite facts about this fight is that in the manga, during Netero's final monologue he says "You underestimate humanity's infinite potential for _____" with the final word being *evolution* in furigana and *malice* in kanji. Togashi uses a play on words to equate the two giving rise to one of the most important themes of the arc: that humanity evolves through its malice. It's also supported by how monstrous Netero looked in his final moments and how Gon has been devolving in the last few episodes, especially on contrast to Meruem who has become more human-like through his feelings for Komugi, Pitou who has become more sympathetic as she *protects* and heals another individual, and Youpi who has found respect for his fellow warriors
@@kerrydiculo he was a devout fanatic who wanted to realize his idealized version of the king, his only development you could say is when he finally undertsands the kings feelings for komugi right at the end
I love this episode so much. The sudden, entirely logical reveal that Netero was never relying upon martial arts to defeat a monster. The natural Shonen conclusion is that it would fall to Gon and Killua with their ballooning powers, but no. They just nuked him, because of course you would.
And yet, with the expectation that a damn nuke can finish the hurt Meruem off, this conclusion still leaves things interesting for the rest of the arc. Netero was shown to be the only one capable to defeat the king and everyone else has by now basically been defeated by the three royal guards, who are guaranteed to go ballistic once they discover the king's fate! So who can defeat them, and how!
If it was up to Netero and he could have defeated Meruem in a fight he would have gladly loved that. However he was tasked to wipe out the King and if possible the Royal Guard by any means necessary. At the end of the day there were people who were mad as hell about the use of the Rose yet they ignore the entire story of the arc: The Ants thought they were the top of the the food chain when humans have been there for so long we created ways to wipe out our own species at a moments notice.

So that's what Meruem didn't understand, nen is not an almighty power in this world and it's not the peak of human evolution, nen is just about the individual strenght, but humans have waaaaay more destructive weapons than Nen. In fact that bomb was law budget and could be easily mass-producted, which means that the ants never stood a chance to win a war against humanity, a couple of bombs and they were doomed. The only reason why it didn't happen in the first place was because they were surrounded by humans (call them human shields) because of the selection, and so thousands of innocents would have died. As hinted in Netero's flashback before he fought Meruem, when he said that they were both in difficult positions, he thought after a phone call that they intended to put the blame on Hunter Association if that happened, so Netero had to destroy the ants without massive casualties among the citizens or they would have dropped the bombs and blamed the Hunters for that. HOWEVER, why didn't Netero just had Meruem leave the palace and used someone else ability similar to Knov to escape and drop a bomb there? It was surely possible to find nen user with similar abilities for the chairman of the hunter associations, somebody who could teleport or hide in a separate dimension like Knov, or simply directly ask Knov to do so (before his breakdown). It would have been simple and safer, right? Well, it's just about ego. Netero WANTED that fight, he never had a true challenge once he finished his training, he was the top nen user in the world. He wanted an enemy he wasn't sure he couldn't win against, he wanted that fight, the satisfaction he never had once in his life because of his own strenght. Netero couldn't back down from his own ego, he wanted to face somebody considered even stronger than him and win with his own strenght. To make sure he would have finished the job he got the bomb implanted in his body, so if he had lost, the king would have died for sure anyway. He lost, admitted it by telling Meruem his name, and then kaboom. Netero got what he wanted, the fight of his life, the thrill he always seeked for, and died with a smile on his face. Another detail: Netero lost his right leg and left arm, those are the ones that he USED against Gon and Killua in the ball game, in which he didn't use left leg and right arm. That was his bias, such a little and futile detail, but still it costed him his life.
Fun fact, the author recently classified Meruem as an emitter type. He just has so much aura that it probably wouldn't matter if he went into a different class of nen since he has more than enough aura to use it inefficiently. He just doesn't have access to specialist nen if he's not training for it.

I think that the whole point of this fight and really this arc, is to show that no matter how "evil" these monsters may seem, humans have the most potential to be Evil. No matter the violence of the animal kingdom, humans will remain the ultimate apex predator.
The king, despite being less than a year old, possessed a profound desire to comprehend and connect with others. His innate sense of duty led him to strive for the well-being of all, particularly the weak and vulnerable. It is crucial to acknowledge that the king was never inherently evil, but rather lacked a clear understanding of what was morally right or wrong. With guidance and proper nurturing, the king could have developed into an exceptional ruler and made a significant positive impact on the world.

That's so f*cking beautiful, all the incredible power system that HxH has and probably the most OP character on entires series that trained for several years and just one bomb, low budget and easily mass produced is more OP than him, that's really human greatness at peak - infinite potential for evolution (and/or malice).
A reminder that there are two ways to read Netero's statement. One way of reading it is indeed a statement about humanities potential for infinite evolution, but the other way of reading his statement in the original Japanese is 'malice'. Netero warns Meruem that even if the ants can exceed humanity's ability to evolve, they cannot match humanity's endless hatred. Hatred that leads it to build such weapons of destruction. That something that's used by *small* dictatorships is effective against everything that they have built, means that if you really get humanity's attention not even your atoms will be left.
if you go back to the episode where Netero encountered pitou, pitou was able to read Netero's attack in just one move. Her amazing eyes and instincts already catched Netero's movements, that concludes pitous eyes is faster than the King.
In Japanese anime, nuclear bombs are portrayed as neither good nor evil. In contrast to American movies that are positively used as the ultimate weapon of mankind.
Netero actually said "You know nothing of the bottomless malice within the human heart" no idea why they changed that in the sub, but it's important ... i guess they didn't want to paint humans in a bad light, but that's like the whole point of the arc, that we're not so different, ants and humans, not only in good, but also in evil ...
As far as I know, in Japanese the Kanji used has a double meaning, both evolution and malice. Basically saying, humans keep evolving (technology) but also using the evolution to fight themselves (war, oppression and so on) => be evil. Hence, malicious evolution (bombs and shit)
He didn't. It's a special part of the japanese language that depending on the reading, some kanji can have multiple meanings. Togashi selected a kanji that means evolution, but has a second meaning of malice as a word play. Evolution is the correct primary translation which is why it was used. The wordplay doesn't translate into english. So they went with the correct translation instead of the "Hidden" one.
I wish the sub used the manga and dubbed version of neteros line, something along the lines of “meruem, don’t underestimate the bottomless malice of the human heart” the evolution line didn’t really make sense
If the ants were sucessfull in getting an army, they could still be defeated, but would be so much harder. Imagine 20000 Palm capable nen users. Ok you could nuke then, but they would not be at the same place then it would be so much more damage and costs so cutting this problem at the root was really needed
This fight show that human maybe lack in physical power than other creatures but the intelligence cover its lack of power, meruem never bother to understand how hunan intelligence work even though komugi is showing him how human intelligence work
Netero was praying the whole time, yet at the end he says “if there is a hell I’ll see you there,” this means that Netero abandoned all of his beliefs in his prayer and sacrificed everything to demolish Mereum. Had Mereum survived the whole world of Nin would have been dominated by him. He is so powerful yet still an infant xd
netero got to have the best fight of his life against the strongest possible opponent , even dying in the process. still securing a W thanks to nuclear tech hahhaha some things never change

7:35 'HE JUST NUKED HIM!'
Perfect, just perfect!
He didn't even nuke him. He used a medium level dirty bomb. Meruem never stood a chance against humanity.
Fun fact, the author recently classified Meruem as an emitter type. He just has so much aura that it probably wouldn't matter if he went into a different class of nen since he has more than enough aura to use it inefficiently. He just doesn't have access to specialist nen if he's not training for it.
Isn’t he a specialist??
@@crocoboi7936 Nope. The King hasn't done anything special. He's an amateur that just learned Nen. He's just throwing it around and wasting it like Gon. He just has immense reserves so he gets away with it.
@@BlackSun6393 no I meant specialist type nen
@@BlackSun6393 i thought he was a specialist because of how pitou states (when he's eating the supreme leader's guard the first time they arrive at the palace) that when he eats another nen user his power grows, meaning that his nen hability literally is something like "if i eat another human with aura my own will grow bigger and make me even more powerfull", and that does not fit in any category, meaning, a specialist ability, and it actually makes sense because he is an ant and nen is deeply related with one's characteristics and personality
@@kerrydiculo there was a big chart posted by Togashi(author of HxH) which classified almost all charactrers in HxH(except Zodiaks if I`m not mistaken). And King belongs to pure Emitter class
Man so many overlooked Knov's dialog about how ants will turn devilish if their purpose was stolen from them, referring to what will happen if the royal guards lose their king.
What a fight!!! Togashi Im thankful for everything that has made this episode possible.
this episode was so COOL !
Strongest man couldnt defeat Ant King, but one guy with money to buy a nuke can defeat anyone.
Cant wait for you to react in the following episodes especially THAT ONE EPISODE that will blow your mind
Do you remember ages ago during the hunter exam when Netero played with Gon and Killuah and said he will not use his right leg and left arm?
And now check again which leg and arm he lost here.
He underestimated how foolish mankind can be. An ant would never create something like that so it wasn't even a possibility on his mind.
Unfortunately, the king was not afforded the opportunity to demonstrate his true potential, as humans failed to see beyond his initial appearance and actions. With guidance and proper nurturing, the king could have developed into an exceptional ruler and made a significant positive impact on the world.
"I feel like Netero is hiding something"
yes
if there is hell, i'll see you there. damn that line is just amazing.
The managing of 2011 HxH budget is still a fucking mistery, because they had such good quality over all the episodes and that makes no sense to a production pov
Hxh was one of the most adored and influential mangas out there not named DBZ. I think madhouse knew they couldn't fuck it up. People still love the 1999 version too. They at least had to make it as good as that one, no matter the budget.
@@db212006 oh I agree, is just that the series budget was actually pretty average to low compared to most anime, and the animation quality is great to stellar all through out. Is a godam miracle we didn't had parts with bad animations in it
1:38 "Trying to guess what drove him to do this is pointless"
**proceeds to try to guess what drove him to do this**
Meruem was figuring out what Netero did to get to that level (training the same move) but he did not intend to guess what drove him to do that crazy impractical training in the first place, no one knows and its pointless to guess, the only thing we know is that Netero was seeking for the ultimate power but the "why" he came to that conclusion of training gratitude and one punch its unkown
@@luzobsidiana Neat explanation but I personally prefer Meruem just looking to be a show-off with his deduction.
Gigachad netero bro was like if I cant live so can't you
7:35 not yet
Exact same thought 😂
netero probably has darkest aura in the hxh he seems like nice old guy but he's one of the craziest character in hxh :dd him and gon has similar personality
Just a reminder that hisoka wanted to fight netero back during the hunter exams💀
6:25 If you're good with your memory, you'll see the parallel between the arm and the leg that Netero lost, with the game he played there in the Hunter exam with Gon.
Crazy episode from an amazing anime. And you still have more in the tank.
7:35 an apropos choice of phrase, as it turned out!
The countdown to easily one of the best episodes of any anime is steadily ticking.
hes getting closer to THE episode
I still like the other translation of the line that I see sometimes, "Never underestimate humanity's capacity for malice"
"Meruem king of ants, don't underestimate the human infinite potential for evolution" the translation is not exact, the last word have a double meaning and it fit perfectly: evolution/malice.
depending on the traduction you'll get one or the other, for exemple in french, malice is used, but in any case, both are meaned
remember which arm/leg Netero used in his little fight with Gon on the airship ;)
While mereum saying ant evolution creates him, netero laughing as he also had human evolution in his body as a nukr
Always remember that Meruem's outlook on humanity completely changed by meeting both the weakest human and the strongest human
The king, despite being less than a year old, possessed a profound desire to comprehend and connect with others. That's so f*cking beautiful, all the incredible power system that HxH has and probably the most OP character on entires series that trained for several years and just one bomb, low budget and easily mass produced is more OP than him, that's really human greatness at peak - infinite potential for evolution (and/or malice).
I love that you keep using the freaked-out Chopper as a default censorship.
7:35
Jack: HE NUKED HIM!!!
Me: well not yet he hasnt lol
7:35 "He just nuked them", nope that's step two, son
Awesome reaction! One thing, it was Meruem who had admiration for his enemy in Netero at the start. Though it was probably reciprocated
Jack when netero used his zero hand: HE JUST NUKED HIM!
me:basically yes but no lol.
Hxh has so much potential if togashi was not on hiatus i garintee it would be even more popular already my fav anime
I think Togashi had done that because of his hiatus. It gave him more time to think about the story of this arc.
@@pausesmana5531 yeah but even when he wasn’t on hiatus he was already coming up with amazing arcs and things like that so idk
Hunter hunter will eventually be more popular if the anime come back
The ant's never stood a chance in the grand scheme of things. If one nuke was not enough what about a thousand?
Imagine fighting on that level with a nuke in your chest the whole time 🤯🤣
This and 131 are 2 of my favorite anime episodes of all time and that's why HxH is my favorite anime
if you go back to the episode where Netero encountered pitou, pitou was able to read Netero's attack in just one move. Her amazing eyes and instincts already catched Netero's movements, that concludes pitous eyes is faster than the King.
“He just nuked him!”
Haha not yet Jack
The fight is over. . . The emotional rollercoaster continues. . .
fight was so good that jack forgot to type in the episode number
*“If there is a Hell, I will see you there.”*
Prayer comes from the heart. This line gives me chils every time
We are in the MEAT OF IT.
tfw you will never be gently enveloped in the indiscriminate love of the 100-Type Guanyin Bodhisattva Zero Hand
"He just nuked him..!"
Not yet.. 🤣
9:45 "why is it a dark aura"
He lacks critical information
Soon... soon you'll see what a nen contract can really do...
In Japanese anime, nuclear bombs are portrayed as neither good nor evil.
In contrast to American movies that are positively used as the ultimate weapon of mankind.
What? The bomb is never portrayed as good here in the states. It is often portrayed as the greatest threat to man, a monster who could destroy all
Man literally a walking nuke and carrying it all these years
Idk if built different can describe whatever the fuck this is
The king had a plan for everything other then what if the other player brought a Nuke to the chess match
Netero actually said "You know nothing of the bottomless malice within the human heart"
no idea why they changed that in the sub, but it's important ... i guess they didn't want to paint humans in a bad light, but that's like the whole point of the arc, that we're not so different, ants and humans, not only in good, but also in evil ...
Its not changed, original is written in a way that this word can be read both as "evolution" and "malice". There is no right or wrong version.
@@SmacznyRabarbar okay there is no right or wrong version ... but we KNOW which one's the right version 😁
@@YashamaruSensei No, dont have a right way, u can choose but its not the right way, both is righ
I wish the sub used the manga and dubbed version of neteros line, something along the lines of “meruem, don’t underestimate the bottomless malice of the human heart” the evolution line didn’t really make sense
This fight is peak fiction
"He just nuked him"
No, not yet. Lmao
I forget how good this gets. The manga continues so if you are interested read them.
*Netero uses Zero
Jack: He just nuked him!
Me: Not yet.
im crying of exitement!!
If the ants were sucessfull in getting an army, they could still be defeated, but would be so much harder. Imagine 20000 Palm capable nen users. Ok you could nuke then, but they would not be at the same place then it would be so much more damage and costs so cutting this problem at the root was really needed
Peak X Peak.
Me: Opens final Exam paper
Narrator: it is this moment, he felt fear for the last time..
old man in socks and a heart shirt is anime for a total baddass lol
unexpected flying leg 🤣
6:40 Top 10 anime phrases that can be used in real life.
7:35 "He just nuked him!"
Yeah... and then he nuked him...
Imo, this is one of the best anime fights
This fight show that human maybe lack in physical power than other creatures but the intelligence cover its lack of power, meruem never bother to understand how hunan intelligence work even though komugi is showing him how human intelligence work
In the end, despite the fact Meruem was the culmination of his race's evolution, humanity's technology still crushed him... like an ant
Hehehe.. It never gets old, I've watched Hunter x Hunter 6 times and it never gets old truly a magnificent anime I'm never gonna be tired of it.
real quality fight in HXH is something crazy
Netero scared the shit out of Meruem
Let's not forget that the only reason why Netero even stood a chance was because Meruem agreed on making him give up so that tells him his name
the bomb still would have activated, and since netero wouldnt have made meruem run away he would have died from the point blank explosion of the rose
Netero was praying the whole time, yet at the end he says “if there is a hell I’ll see you there,” this means that Netero abandoned all of his beliefs in his prayer and sacrificed everything to demolish Mereum. Had Mereum survived the whole world of Nin would have been dominated by him. He is so powerful yet still an infant xd
you bouta be surprised in the next ep bro
Remember netero saying he’d have to sacrifice someone to accomplish the mission…
it was "infinite malice" not "infinite potential for evolution" although Nietzche said these are pretty much the same.
netero got to have the best fight of his life against the strongest possible opponent , even dying in the process. still securing a W thanks to nuclear tech hahhaha
some things never change
