Netero nuking Meruem is probably the craziest and yet most realistic plot twist in a shonen ever. Hunter x Hunter is PEAK, period.
what plot twist. Do you even understand meaning of plot twist. That was just another power up. We see that in every other shounen anime. Suddenly a character has some ability that we didn't previously knew. Nothing new.

I really like how they explain that this bomb is cheap and mass produced, it really drives home the point that humans created weapons so destructive and powerful just to kill each other that even a single cheap bomb was able to destroy the collective pinnacle of the Chimera Ant species, Meruem. It ties back into Netero saying that Meruem doesn’t understand the human potential for malice/evolution.
Not even Merurms Nen was able to survive a damn nuke 😂

It also shows an ant couldn't even imagine those levels of foolishness. Meruem understood how strong and smart humans can be, but he underestimated how stupid humans can be at the same time. An ant would never create something like that, so it wasn't even a possibility in his mind.

Netero's voice actor did an impeccable job in this episode. He managed to convey a menacing tone even though his voice was calm and low.

humans really are special creatures. We're capable of the heights of goodness and the most evil things imaginable, and we do it all with a deeper understanding of their consequences. That's ,i think, one of the messages of this fight; Meruem represents the overwhelming force of mother nature, but with that comes a certain naivety and lack of scope. Netero represents humanity, in all of its gratitude and cruelty. God i love this show.

@@sleightasteeg017 In the manga, the actual spoken word is still "evolution" (shinka), but it was paired with another word written in furigana (a kind of smaller notation used to show the proper reading of the kanji used, or in this case, add an alternate/double meaning) which was "malice" (akui).

I love how it wasn't a special bomb in their world. Low-budget and can be mass produced. The highest form of a living being, dealt with the low effort of technology.
True, the collective peak of an entire species dealt with just by a cheap mass produced bomb, like Netero said humans have been developing ways to more effectively kill each other since the beginning of our existence.
i think it's the opposite, the more cheaper and effective a thing can be, more advanced is the technology behind it. So this show how far it's the potencial of the humanity, a low-bugdet bomb destroyed an individual designed and shaped the be the strongest live being in the world.

The cutting edge and advanced technology is usually extremely rare at first precisely because it’s so new and advanced, mass production only becomes a thing once that new technology becomes old enough that we have streamlined the process to produce this technology.

Every two-bit dictator has these weapons, and once the world realized what was happening in that country they would have blown the whole thing back to the Stone Age. Every named character we have seen in this entire arc would have died.
Humanity had long since stopped crafting weapons to kill eachother one vs one...we developed ways to kill each other en masse.

At that singular moment, he truly realized how bad he really underestimated how far humanity is willing to go in order to preserve themselves. When he thought that thought, I’m sure he was humbled and felt stupid assuming he knows the capabilities of humanity.

Netero lost in this fight the same limbs he didnt use when he played with gon and killua at the start of the anime, he also gave meruem the same task he gave at the last part of the hunter exam, making your opponent admit defeat without killing them

It's even more impressive when you remember that Netero is an enhancer not a conjurer. Enhancers are usually weak on that area because conjuring falls on the other side of the whole Nen spectrum.
Netero uses pretty much every category of nen in his hatsu, except the especialist.. truly the pinnacle nen user
There is Conjurer and manipulator technique in it. And for the zero hand , I think that is an emitter attack.
The Chimera Ant arc is arguably the greatest arc in all of anime, largely because of this fight. The dialogue, the setup to reveal how powerful and interesting Meruem is, the reveal of how incredible Netero is, how outmatched Netero is by Meruem, and the surprise chest nuke. This fight is so well written and executed, and it is the perfect climax.

Mistranslation in the anime, the line should read:
"You have no idea of humanity's infinite potential for malice."
Basically, it's Netero saying "Yeah you ants may be the pinnacle of evolution, but we've been coming up with more and more fucked up ways to kill each other since time immemorial." Which leads into the soft indictment of using nuclear bombs as weapons and the horrible aftermath it has. A lot of the beautiful subtext is lost in the anime adaptation.
Its something from the Japanese language but Malice and Evolution are both correct translation
Also the fact that there are worse(power) bombs than PMR, but thousands of PMR's can be produced in a single day and whats worse is the secondary target of the bomd are those who try to escape and those who try to help, it's the ultimate evil.

The nuke that was dropped on Hiroshima was only around 15 kilotons. That puts it in the lower range for what today we would consider a ‘tactical nuke’. (1-50KT)

It's not a mistranslation, 進化 is written in furigana beside 悪意 in the manga. This is often done to provide a double meaning.

I can never get sick of this fight especially the ending. The nuke at the end is incredible. Like one of the reactors say, it’s the IMPLOSION they animated before the nuclear explosion that just adds so much more weight to this screen. You can like feel the destructiveness of this nuke and I feel like the initial implosion really helps sell it’s ridiculous power, which isn’t even one of the strongest bombs that humans have created. Really drives home the line “don’t underestimate the human race and it’s infinite potential for evolution.” I honestly felt pride as a human when the line said as silly as that sounds lol

The revolution does not have only good things but also has evil things like nuke. It all depends on human's purpose.That line points out both human's good and evil stuff at the same time.

I'm certain that togashi whom grew up in The Coldwar Era, was inspired by The Dead Hand or MAD(mutually assured destruction) of the military where in if humanity does croak will also bring the entirety of the planet with it. Goes to show how insane our race is.

I always hated this part. Its perfect, it is exactly how humanity is. Meruem is indeed the collective product of his entire species existence, he alone stands atop any humans power...but humans have long since passed making weapons to kill eachother one on one. We moved to killing entire cities in one quick attack..the Miniature Rose is "Cheap and mass produced" meaning its comparatively weak to what else is on the market. This is what Netero meant when he said Meruem had no understanding of humanities evolution. There is NOTHING humanity cannot kill if we truly want to. Meruem fought as the pinnacle of his race vs the pinnacle of humanity but he expected an honorable fight, in the end though we never fight fair.. not if there is enough on the line.
Netero was a representative of both the good in humans and the evil too the whole fight was honourable till the ending then we see the dark side of humanity witch is the mass destruction we do and create the infinite potential of malice of humanity, when the king felt true fear for the first time in his whole life was when he saw humanity true face.
I was inspired by Netero's resolve... and implanted a nuke in myself! (giant missile is sticking out of Alondro's back) I'm sure no one will notice!

Honestly its sad that things HAD to end like they did, cause Meruem's arc, is in fact a Cool Anti-Hero origine story.

He was CRAZY OP? and after the Bombing and him absorbing Pouf and Youpi powers he was EVEN more OP, basicly the MOST OP existence in the world.
But he din't Develop a "special" technique or Ability that ONLY HIM can do, all of his Nen powers are actually BASIC Nen concepts pushed to their Max, but he NEVER did get a Power like Netero, or Killua, or Knuckles or Knov or Kite for example.
Not that he needed to since he's so ridiculously OP, but when you think about what his Nen ability would have been , it send shivers down the spine...
I do Believe that his obsession with board games and tactics and calculating the probabilities of said games, maybe his Nen ability would have been "Foresight" ?, been able to calculate ALL outcomes at such speed that it would be like him predicting the future in the blink of an eye up to 5 seconds in advance with a 99.99% accuracy.

What's so cool about the relation between Netero, Meruem and Komugi is that realistically, Meruem would have lost to Netero eventually without mentally training with Komugi. Yet this would also be a more monstrous Meruem, the Meruem who killed a child just for screaming. Meruem becoming more human technically won him the match, which perfectly encapsulates the theme of this arc.
The ants grew powerful, but also less powerful in the fact that they developed emotions, while the humans grew powerful, in the exchange of morality such as Gon threatening to kill Komugi and Netero using the Poor Man's Rose.
Netero be like : If you can't beat an Insect , Nuke them.!!!!😂😂

after Togashi release the real (new) nen types. in that chart netero is considered as a 100 percent master enhancer but. since he can still conjure a giant freaking buddha with multiple arms i believe he is also a master conjurer (but like his conjurer ability is only max to 60 to 80 percent compared to a person that is really a conjurer that can master the conjurer type to 100 percent.) before Togashi release this new chart we all thought that killua is 100 percent transmutation type but after Togashi release the real chart. Killua is 50 percent transmutter and 50 percent enhance. with that being said netero was abled to instantly close his decapitated leg because he is a master enhancer. but imagine if Netero is 100 percent conjurer.

I don't think the choice to ignore the word "akui" (malice) used in the manga as a first choice was done without Togashi's approval but idk for sure
...but still the writers for the anime did that choice with or without Togashi's approval, so the translation/translator has nothing to do with it
Togashi put the 2 words in the manga (1. "akui" : 'evil intent, malice' and 2. "shinka" : 'evolution') to give a wider meaning to Netero's idea but obviously you can't say the 2 words in a spoken dialogue so they had to choose one for the anime...
I'm actually curious why they chose the 2nd word instead of the 1st one, but it kinda make sense
"malice" is very straightforward = humans are evil beyond anything Meruem could imagine, but the use of "evolution" in that context matches Meruem's line about being the pinnacle of his species' evolution... humans evolve too but in a different manner, not through their DNA like the CA but by putting their minds together to achieve smth big... like nukes...
One person alone can't achieve that result (in HxH world Netero is peak of individual strength
The reason they said shinka is because you're supposed to prioritize the furigana when it appears. There's no deeper meaning to it than that. Although I will say that they could have put the kanji for akui on screen like they did when Netero said "bad move" to Pitou.
