It's especially interesting considering people once thought elephants, rhinos, hippos and tapir were closely related to each other (rhinos and tapirs actually are, but their closest relative are equines such as horses and zebras, whom they share an order with)
I just LOVE these plump little guys! Amazing they related to elephants and not rodents. What I really love is how social they are how one is posted as a lookout. They share several qualities with humans including every once in a while having a tyrant reigning over them which makes the entire colony unhappy. Studies have shown it depresses then so much when this happens that their average life expectancy gets significantly lower ....they truly love one another and trust one another ...if one rock hyrax couches for an outsider the whole clan accepts them ....even a human outsider I believe. My first exposure to the rock hyrax was the book "born free" and THEN I discovered that certain Bible passages speak of them even though they are called by other names. The Bible I think calls them "a gentle people" or something close to that....just super wonderful little creatures! I want a couple of em! Which I guess in the United States is not an option dang it
Why would people in the near east know about a creature that mostly lives near the southern part of Africa? They don't have hyraxes up in Egypt, do they?
@@warwickdumas2573 Rock hyraxes do live in the near east, specifically along the Nile, sub Saharan Africa, and along wetter areas of the southern levant and Arabia.
The people who live in that house probably feed him regularly and he's calling for his snacks. His belly is empty and hunting. I've seen them in the wild and I walked right up and sat down next to one and started talking to it. He kept eating and looked at me as if he understood what I was saying. I even filmed him, putting my phone inches from his face, he just kept eating. They are crazy cute!
